Making Room

As we saw yesterday there are many new plows joining fleets all across the region but for every new plow that joins and old plow must leave. It is a law of nature. Below we see one of two International 2674 from the City of Syracuse. These two have sat behind the salt barn since early spring waiting for the eventual move to the Onondaga County surplus location behind the North Area Maintenance Facility. Apparently there is no rush to sell these truck as they finally arrived on site three weeks ago. The listing on Auctions International has yet to show up…unless I missed. LOL, yeah right.

Update: Items were listed after this post went live. Click here to view.

International 2674

Above, truck 251 as it sits now, and here as it was in August of 2013. It doesn’t seem much different!

As I was passing through the Town of Wilna, NY this past weekend I noticed these two truck sitting outside on display. Turns out they are for sale. The sale sign didn’t list much information but the one on the left is 2674 while the one on the right is a S2500

International Trucks

Now there is a possibility this next truck is not for sale. I saw it at the local Kenworth dealer so it’s possible it might in for engine work (Cummins) or maybe it’s a trade in. From the Town of Brutus, an International 2574. Have you noticed the pattern yet?

What was once new is now old. They cycle continues.

Snow Plow Update Sept 2016

It’s time to acknowledge that winter is on its way and what better way to do that that by looking at the rookies of the 2015-2016 season. Town of Mentz has this new Freightliner 114SD with Tenco front blade.

The Jefferson County Highway Department is dreaming big with this new Kodiak snow blower.

Autocar Mondays – 1954 DC75

This 1954 DC-75 looks so nice that you would think it rolled right out of a museum. Guess what, it did! Coming from the Keystone Truck and Tractor museum in  Colonial Heights VA this Autocar represents the iconic trucks of yesteryear that made up the thousands upon thousands of regional fleets found across the country.

Autocar DC75

Making the trip from Virginia to the ATCA show in Athens Ontario was no small undertaking but this truck was part of entire convoy. Make sure to check out the museum website noted above to get a feel for what there is to see and do. They even have a BBQ joint on premise!

Ozinga Concrete

Did Ryan go to Chicago to enjoy two days of Pearl Jam concerts? Or did Ryan go to Chicago to look at concrete trucks? That’s like asking what came first, the chicken, or the egg? Philosophers and theologians will debate until the end of time without obtaining an answer but in the end it won’t really matter as long as we have truck photos to enjoy.

Ozinga Ready Mix

Look at that, he talked the guys into watering down the street for that Hollywood look. Below we see how it all begins with arrival and unloading of raw material.

Ryan tells us that the group at Ozinga is top notch, the smoothest concrete operation he has ever witnessed. That’s how praise coming from a man who seen his fair share of companies from one coast to the next!

Make sure to check out allreadymix.com for more great photos like these!

Fine Looking Macks

I think my new video/photo spot at the ATCA Harford show paid off pretty nicely with this photo don’t you think? This great looking combo rolled in after the initial flurry of trucks arriving within minutes of each other. I guess the Convoy movie really left a lasting mark on the minds of many.

Mack Superliner

The driver was nice enough to put on a mini show with arriving, backing, and then unloading and thanks to the magic of video you can enjoy it all!

Volkswagen to Purchase 16.6% Stake in Navistar

For nearly as long as this website has been around Navistar, maker of International Trucks and IC buses, has been a prime candidate for merger, partnership, or direct takeover by a European truck builder. I speculated as much in 2011 when the first signs of the EGR disaster began to bloom like a mushroom cloud in the sky. I don’t consider myself an expert on the the high finance dealing of the modern truck industry but it was simple enough to deduce which of the remaining U.S. independents would fall first. PACCAR being in much better health both financially and product wise plus its involvement with the European DAF brand of trucks made them an unlikely candidate. International on the other hand with its declining market share, increased debt load and limited global footprint made the most attractive choice to a foreign power like Volkswagen with its zero commercial vehicle footprint in North America. With dreams of competing globally with Daimler, owner of Freightliner and Western Star trucks, VW either had to start from scratch or buy their way into the party.

So we know how we got here but what is next? Volkswagen announced yesterday they would purchase a 16.6% stake in Navistar worth 256 million dollars with an understanding they will hold the shares for at least three years. This purchase price also allows for the appointment of two board members at the discretion of VW. While the stock purchase paves the way for an eventual merger the immediate consequences provide International with a much needed shot of capital, increased technological capabilities, and volume purchasing power of material and parts. Over the next five years this partnership is expected to save International over 500 million dollars. With International embarking on Project Horizon, an 18 month plan to introduce new trucks across their entire product line, these savings are immensely important.

The most immediate results of this cooperation will be seen in the form of powertrain components such as engines, axles and transmissions. It should be noted that the International N13 engine already uses technology sourced from MAN, a current subsidiary of the Volkswagen Truck group.

In an optimal world I would have liked to see International claw their way back into prosperity, a path they were solidly on before this recent news but ultimately I would rather see the name continue on then fall to the vultures of bankruptcy or reorganization. Much, much more to come on this front.

2016 ATCA Northeast PA – Part II

I first saw this Ford LTL 9000 at the ATHS show in York, PA last year. It was a stunner then and it’s a stunner now. In my opinion Ford reached the pinnacle of the truck design with this model. This blue oval wonder has the ever popular Cat 3406 under the hood for effortless highway cruising speed.

Ford LTL9000

In the gallery below you’ll notice three shots of a rusty Brockway. It is officialy the slowest truck in the world with the drive wheels barely making one complete rotation over a two minute span of time.

In todays video we see a few trucks that showed up in picture form yesterday, namely the stretched Cruiseliner.

2016 ATCA Northeastern PA

Another fantastic ATCA classic truck has come and gone from the Harford, PA fairgrounds. With a near record number of trucks and spectators on hand there was plenty to do and see, and in the case of old trucks, hear.

Mack Cruiseliner

When I see the Harford show on the calendar I never have to question if I should attend, even if the weather will be less than perfect. It’s a given that you will leave this show feeling satisfied. There is always a healthy mix of regular attendees with crowd favorites along with the truly rare items. This Rehberger is a perfect example of a truck you probably won’t see anywhere else. Basic research indicates less than 600 trucks were built over a twenty year period.

Rehberger Truck

We’ll spend the next couple days reliving all the action with this first group of photos.

This year I tried out a new video spot near the main gate of the show grounds. All the trucks enter here and while they might not be running wide open like the do in previous video locations I think the action turned out rather well especially once the sun started to move behind my shoulder. I probably shot more video here than in any other year which is a good thing…but also bad…considering I still have footage from last years show that has yet to see the light of day!

Autocar Mondays – Get What You Pay For

Today we have a well preserved 1978 Autocar DC that at one time was in the service of the Suffolk County weights and measurement division. Somehow this old truck retired to a private collection without having the official seal spray painted over. Major score. I’ve got to think that when this rig was in active service it was used to verify scales a tad larger than the ones found at your local supermarket checkout.

This truck has been seen floating around various shows and events of Western New York over the last year but I have yet to cross paths with it. Andy captured these photos last year at the Pageant of Steam in Canandaigua, NY where the crane arm out back was used to load a massive hit or miss engine onto the rear deck.

Thanks for the share Andy!

Rapid Paths of Progress

Fresh on the heels of the HD11G coverage from the other day comes this 1950’s Allis Chalmers crawler tractor promotional film. There is some great footage contained within regarding the construction of the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, The Saint Lawrence Seaway, and the Illinois Toll Road to name a few. The AC machines are the stars of the show but there is more than enough vintage equipment, trucks and cars in nearly every shot to keep fans of any brand happy. The boulder pushing scenes around Lake Tahoe are particularly awe inspiring yet terrifying at the same time. Enjoy!
