Empire Farm Days 2013

Yesterday I spent some time at the Empire Farm Days show outside of Seneca Falls, NY. Farm Days is something of trade show for farmers and other folks in the agriculture industry. Seminars, equipment demonstrations, and other farm related stuff all take place during this three day event. It’s a fairly impressive show in both scope and size. I really don’t know anything about farming but I do know that enjoy looking at the impressive equipment that modern agriculture depends on.

Look at this harvester, it’s like an alien space ship.

Every major manufacturer of farm tractors and implements is on hand for the Empire Farm Days. There are even a few upstarts of speciality vehicles that squeeze in among the big boys. Below is a small sample of what was on hand. The technology of the equipment is impressive but I’m not sure how the average farmer can afford any of it.

Below is a video of the New Holland forage cruiser in action. Corn doesn’t stand a chance.

As I said, there was A TON to see at this show. Tomorrow I will share some of the trucks, vintage tractors and other cool items from the auction yard.

Manifest Destiny

It’s quite possible that I’ve featured a Moultons truck on DDD every week for the past three weeks. While we wait on confirmation from the research department lets take a gander at the photo below.

Dan was able to grab a shot of this rig while heading back from a quarry in Western NY. For a CNY based company Moultons sure does get around but after all their slogan is “We Haul It All.”

Dump Truck Dump Off

Time to unload a large collection of dump truck photos gathered over the past month or so. Some of the trucks below are new to DDD while some are repeats. Can you figure out the new from the old?

Empire State Antique Truck Association – The Videos

Today you have the choice of two videos. You can watch a selection of trucks arrive at the 2013 ESATA show or you can watch vintage tractors pull a weighted sled. If you’re really crazy you can watch both!

Neat!

Save The Rain

Work continues on a project in downtown Syracuse to separate storm sewers from sanitary sewers in order to prevent sewage from entering the long suffering Onondaga Lake. You’ve seen some photos from this job in the past but I figured it was time to stop by again to see what was new. This particular day happened to be very sunny which led my camera to do some strange things with color and shadows. A happy mistake or have the machines started to develop intelligence?

ESATA 2013

Yesterday I went to the Empire State Antique Truck Association annual show in Stafford, NY. This is a two day event so if you are reading this at some point during the day on Sunday, August 4th 2013 there still might be time for you to go! I think I may have used this same line when describing the show last year but I am a busy man and don’t have the time to check. Ha! Either way, I had a good time. The weather was perfect for a truck show with plenty of sun, just a little heat and a cool breeze that refreshed when needed. Check out the gallery below for a sample of what was on hand. Video to come later in the week.

Oshkosh Snow Plow

Now this is a great lawn ornament! Rick sends us the photos below of an Oshkosh plow truck that is on display somewhere near Oshawa Ontario. He reports that this truck is resting on a nice patch of gravel and has done so for a number of years. It resides at a company that specializes in the repair and construction of airport snow removal equipment. Rick tells us that he seen various pieces of snow fighting equipment in their yard over the years including Sincard Blowers.

On the Job – Vector Construction Corporation

I came across this group of trucks belonging to Vector (a quantity represented by an arrow, with both direction and magnitude) Construction Corporation last week as they waited to unload many concrete forms. The old Chevy Kodiak you see below was in nice shape as were its coworkers of two Macks and an International.

Well maintained equipment is the hallmark of a well managed and respectable business.

ATHS 2006 National Convention – Baltimore, MD.

I enjoy the Back To The Future movies with the second film holding a special place in my heart. It’s hard to deny the coolness that is a time traveling Deloran but I think we can all agree the movies could have been better if some sort of semi truck was used. If such a time traveling vehicle existed we could all journey back to the 2006 ATHS National Convention in Baltimore and enjoy the event as it happened. Sadly the real world is fairly boring compared to the movies so these photos of my trip from seven years ago will have to suffice.

The 2006 convention was the second national meet I attended. The show was held on beautiful grounds of Carroll Park in the southwest of Baltimore. Despite early concerns that large vehicles would have difficulty in such an urban setting the park had more than enough space for vehicles of all sizes. The surrounding streets may have been a different story. This event was also the very first in which I started taking video of the trucks coming and going. The quality of the video is poor based on the camera of the time but still entertaining. Check on the video link at the top of the page to visit my Youtube channel for this original footage.

If I had to guess I probably only photographed a quarter of the trucks that made it to the show. The turn out and variety was exceptional. One that stood out in both photo and memory is this 1941 International DS300 with 17 original miles. Your eyes are not deceiving you.

The story of this truck reads as so. The International was one of five trucks purchased by Solider Brothers Trucking of Toldeo Ohio, in 1941. Four of the trucks were put to work while this International sat in the corner of the garage. With raw materials stretched because of WWII this truck was eventually pushed into service as an organ donor . Following the end of the war this truck continued to sit for another 50 years until the current owner began a five year restoration.

The Baltimore show provided plenty of trucks to gawk at like this mint 1940’s Autocar cement truck.

And this amazing first generation Superliner.

So take a moment and browse through the gallery below. If you happen to spot a truck that I misidentified please let me know.

Peterbilt 65 Ton Rotator

There is a big chunk of money sitting in the picture below. Dan shares with us a 2013 Peterbilt with a 65 ton rotator on the chassis. Alternatively you can just call it a tow truck. Also pictured are a Cat CT660 water truck and Western Star semi. All three rigs were on display on the DHS Diecast open house this past weekend to help inspire the next round of model building.
