1st Gear Replicas – Tonka is jealous

As the title mentioned, this ain’t your kids sandbox Tonka.  First Gear Replicas is the premium manufacturer of truck and heavy equipment related die-cast collectibles.  As evidence I submit their production of the International PayHauler.  As an avid 1st Gear collector I can testify to the level of detail that is placed in each model.  Simply put, you won’t find anything on this truck that didn’t exist in the real world and vise versa. Did I mention you also receive a reproduction of the actual PayHauler’s owner manual? Yeah, it’s cool.

1963 Hayes Clipper

I’m not sure about you but most Mondays mornings I feel as old as this truck and fail to look nearly half as good. Hayes was a Canadian truck manufacturer that was primarily known for their off highway logging trucks and prime movers. Two successive corporate buy outs by Mack and PACCAR respectively brought a close to the production of new Hayes trucks in 1975. I’m not sure how many on highway trucks Hayes manufactured but I’m sure the number was low. To see one in the US much less the East Coast is nothing short of amazing.

At the Dealer – Freightliner Coronado

It’s always fun to swing by your local dealer and see what’s on the lot. Either to check on the new models or to scan the backlot for the trucks traded in for new models. In this case we have a newer model Coronado for Suit-Kote at Tracy Equipment Company. Not too bad for a Freightliner.

Here is a shot of an International TerraStar at the local dealer. With this new model and the departure of GM from the class 4/5 work truck market International hopes for to see some serious success with the new model line. The TerraStar is powered by a International MaxxxForce 7 diesel engine that is matted to an Allison 1000 series transmission.

Still Working: Autocar Roll-Off

Welcome to Still Working, a series that I hope will become a regular on Daily Diesel Dose. Still Working will pay tribute to the trucks and machines that have long ago lost their showroom shine but continue to loyaly toil away for their owners. To start, we have a 80’s something Autocar roll-off still in daily use by Syracuse Haulers. Clearly someone at Syracuse Haulers likes this old truck as their fleet is comprised of late model Macks and Internationals. Aside from one Kenworth COE garbage truck this Autocar is the only oddball of the fleet. I hope it has many more miles left in it!

Clark Michigan 675

From Youtube, the oracle of all internet video, comes the amazingly vintage promotional film of the Clark Michigan 675 wheel loader.   Watch as white lab coated engineers construct the 675 from working prototype to a fully functional land behemoth.  Marvel as the fully open, non ROPS equipped demonstrator is put through the paces.  Tremble as the two (yes!) Detroit Diesel move this revolutionary machine up steep quarry grades. Keep an eye for all the other vintage equipment like International PayHaulers and Mack quarry dump trucks.  The two videos below truly represent a bygone era of American manufacturing and engineering.  Enjoy!

Caterpillar has revealed it’s brand new class of on highway vocational trucks for the U.S. market.   The new CT660 is based on the International heavy spec Paystar truck line and powered by a International diesel engine.  Caterpillar is quick to point out that the CT660 is not just a rebaged Paystar as significant changes to the chassis and frame have been made.  With the economy showing signs of improvement Cat may have pulled the curtain back on this truck just in time.

Volkswagen to purchase International?

Could Navistar International become the next jewel in the Volkswagen corporate crown?

Industry analysts believe the US maker of heavy trucks could be the final missing piece for Volkswagen in their quest to be the number one global automaker in all segments.  The purchase of International would leave PACCAR (Peterbilt, Kenworth) as the last domestically owned U.S. truck manufacturer.
