2013 Woodsmen’s Field Days

This past weekend I paid my first visit to the Woodsmen’s Field Days in Boonville, NY. Much like the Empire Farm Days show the WFD revolves around one industry and the machines necessary for success in the modern world. On display were all forms of heavy equipment relating to logging and its many forms. Skidders, processors, feller bunchers, stump grinders, log trucks, loaders, dozers, mobile saw mills, the list goes on and on. The highlight of the day takes place when all of this equipment gathers for a parade through the fair grounds. To completely cover this event I made the trip with Dan who acted as the proffesional photographer while I covered the video side of things. By working together we can bring you a better Daily Diesel Dose.

Stay tuned tomorrow for complete parade coverage!

Autocar Mondays – ’73 Autocar DC

Some of you probably figured out the clue from last week that an Autocar was due to hit the page. You can now enjoy the fruits of your labor. Here is another great truck belonging to Michael Moroz, a 1973 Autocar DC. Some might argue that this model represents what Autocar is all about. Heavy duty. Over built. All business.

Michael tells me this truck is no longer on the road but here is a picture of it working a job near Fort Drum.

Once again, a huge thank you goes out to Michael for sharing these beautiful trucks with us. Would you like to help keep Autocar Mondays alive? Send in your photos to eric@dailydieseldose.com

Ford LTL Super Jump

I would like to share with you some videos that were brought to my attention over the past week. Up first is this insane jump of a what looks like a Ford LTL9000 from the land down under, Australia. Enjoy multiple shots from both the inside and out of this insane attempt.

Up next is something a little different. Technically it’s not truck related but it does revolve around a trailer so I think it’s worthy.

Does that look like something you would want to try? Count me out!

Your Trucks – The Moroz Fleet

I received some photos today of three really great looking dump trucks owned by Michael Moroz that I would like to share with you. They are really sharp looking rigs that could pass for brand new to the untrained eye.

Take a look at this 1990 Mack RD690S. Classic dump truck material.

If you like that more rugged look that only spoke wheels can provide I have a very nice 1987 RD686SX for your viewing pleasure.

Both trucks still run the roads to this very day thanks to the efforts of Michael. Now I know some of you are wondering where the third truck is. Don’t worry, I still have enough fingers left to count to three but I won’t reveal the third until this Monday (hint hint).

Do you have a truck you would like to share with the rest of the Daily Diesel Dose community? It can be your own rig or one you drive every day. Working or not working. Awaiting restoration or restored. Even trucks that you once drove or owned would be great! If you feel like sharing drop me a line at eric@dailydieseldose.com

Heavy Metal Fest 2013

A few years back I went to Metallica concert. My seats were up in the nosebleeds but that really doesn’t matter when you see Metallica as long as your ears work. Of all the concerts you could attend you probably never would guess that you would told to be sit down while watching the likes of Volbeat, Lamb of God(not that great) and the infamous Metallica but that is what happened to me. This is a HEAVY METAL CONCERT PEOPLE! Thundering guitars. Pyrotechnics. Songs with lyrics about the electric chair, armageddon and sanitariums! Of course you would find people who just want to sit calmly in their seat and play sudoku.

Below is a video of REAL heavy metal. The kind that can really crush and maim you with little to no effort required. No one will tell you to sit down so they can see the show. As I mentioned last week there was a large auction held in conjunction with the Empire Farm Days show. I’ve singled out some of the older bits of equipment for this video. Looking back I wish I had done a better job highlighting all the interesting details on these machines but for some reason I was running a marathon through the auction yard.

The first star in the video is a Cat 621 scraper. The pan contained a layer of dirt that had sprouted a healthy looking patch of grass. There were many other parts of the machine that had accumulated dirt from which other pieces of flora were growing. I’m guessing the last time this Cat did real work was more than a few years ago. Cool looking beast no matter how you look at it.

The next subject is a International PayLoader. You really don’t see to many of these loaders around anymore. I imagine parts are starting to thin out making them difficult to keep on the job. This Payloader had its fair share of custom modifications. Keep an eye out for the beer bottle fuel filler neck plug. Use what you have at hand I suppose? The cab of this machine was loaded with every type of insect know to mankind and a few others yet to be classified. They were all angry and looking to attack so I left them be.

Of all the machines in the video the Cat 977K track loader looked to be the best of the bunch. All the necessary parts seemed to be there but I’m no heavy equipment buff so I could be wrong. How do you determine the life left on an under carriage? That seems to be a popular way to gauge the vaule of an old dozer like this one. To sweeten the deal the 977K came with a “premium” bottle of starter fluid. Lets make a deal!

And finally we end up with a Koehring excavator which might be the rarest of the group. This machine comes from the wild times of the 70’s when every who wasn’t named Caterpillar was buying and merging in an vain attempt survive a shrinking market. The counter weight of the Koehring wore the name Bantam as proof of this turbulent time. I like the twin pod engine bay look of this excavator. The pod opposite the operator holds a Detroit engine while the other holds hydraulics. I only assume this as I didn’t bother to look. Much like the payloader this machine is beeeaaattt. If any major parts like the turntable are too far gone this unit probably will end up on the scrap heap.

Sierra-Tahoe Ready Mix – International LoneStar

Do you remember when the LoneStar was first revealed? I sure do. It seemed like such an insane design at the time. For many there were only two choices. Love it or hate it. Being an International fan I was closer to the love it camp but the style took some time to grow on me. Now that truck has been in production for around five years they don’t seem as outlandish as they once did but they still call for a double take when seen on the road.

Ryan sends us this photo of LoneStar in the daycab configuration for Sierra-Tahoe Ready Mix. It’s a great looking rig that seems well suited for the application. I never thought the LoneStar would be used on the vocational side of the market but there ya go. My ignorance knows no bounds.

Thanks Ryan!

Mack Truck Collection

I sure do enjoy finding an old and weathered truck that is still on the road earning its keep. This R-Model Mack belonging to the Northern Group seems to fit the bill nicely. Months back I passed by their Fulton, NY yard and discovered they had many more old Macks (and Internationals) resting in their yard. You can read all about it by clicking here.

Also included in the collection is an old fire truck used by the Owego Hose Team to compete at firemen field days across the state, a video still of Mack CL 700 operated by Barrett Paving and Hanson Superliner at Beam Mack.

Industry News Roundup – August 2013

Truck News reports that Navistar has reached a milestone with over 10,000 orders placed for the Cummins ISX15 powered International Prostar. Major fleet orders include Penske, Ryder and Swift. This is good news for the struggling manufacturer as it continues to regain lost Class 8 market share.

Kenworth continues to make inroads with its medium duty cabover trucks. The builder claims it is fully committed to the CO style truck and is aggressively training dealers and staff to tout the benefit of the truck in more urban areas. Read the complete story over at Truckinginfo.com.

To refurbish or to buy new? That is the question. Government-Fleet.com has an interesting article on what to considering before grabbing the keys to a new vehicle or piece of heavy equipment.

And finally Commercial Carriers Journal had the oppurtinity to interview new Navistar President Bill Kozek. The future of SCR, Cat vocational trucks and natural gas vehicles are discussed by the 26 year industry veteran.

14th Annual National Brockway Show

Yesterday saw the 14th Annual National Brockway show grace the streets of downtown Cortland, NY. Over 100 trucks made the journey from around the country and the world to return to their place of the birth. In addition to the regular attendees there always happens to be more than a few new trucks added to the mix. The streets of Cortland provided a great background for this show but make it a challenged to grab a clean shot. If you don’t see your favorite truck in the gallery below it’s probably had a large crowd of admirers. I want to send a a big thanks to all the volunteers and owners of these classic machines who make this show possible each and every year. Without you the rest of us would have nothing to enjoy each August!

Empire Farm Days – Part 2

Yesterday I mentioned that there was a decent collection of classic tractors on hand during the Empire Farm Days 2013 show. The large turn out was made possible by the local tractor clubs of the area. Red power. Green power. Orange power. All the colors of the rainbow.

And where would modern farming be without the diesel powered truck? No where! Most of the rigs on hand were of the “just rolled out of the field” variety. EFD is held on a working farm so I was even able to grab a shot of a truck parked near some silos. There was a nice restored B-Model on hand for Alyne Trucking and a International WorkStar with some serious floating tires for the fields.

There was also an interesting selection of tractors from Willow Run Farms. If you want a immaculately restored John Deere from the mid 80’s to early 90’s give them a call. They have some really beauties.

And if that wasn’t enough there was a massive two day auction on the grounds. Tractors, trucks, cars, heavy equipment, building supplies, etc. I was surprised to find a B-67 sitting in the row of trucks waiting for the hammer to fall. Body wise it was in decent shape from what I could tell. Other highlights included a Detroit powered 70’s FWD plow truck, Cat 621 scraper, a Cat 977K dozer and International Hough Payloader. All fall under the vintage, heavy iron category. Walk around videos to follow.

So next year if you are looking to take a day off in the middle of the week I suggest taking a trip to the Empire Farm Days. There is MUCH more to this event than I covered. Bring the entire family!
