Autocar Mondays – ATCA Harford 2013

It doesn’t get much more Autocar than this! Yesterday I attended the ATCA NE Penn Endless Mountain chapter truck show in Haford, PA where I had the absolute pleasure to see this prime example of a classic dump truck. Everything you see on this truck is how it was when it still ran the road on a regular basis just a short time ago.

I was able to catch this rig as it arrived at the show and a few other times as it participated in a slow truck race.

This truck was a fill in for two other show trucks due to threat of poor weather. I’ve never been so happy to have a few clouds in the sky!

Still Working – International Dump Trucks

I’ve crossed paths with plenty of old ‘Binders over the course of the summer. Some may feel that I seek them out but in reality they seem to be everywhere. I guess they were built to last or International made A LOT of them. Reality is often what you choose to decide.

The truck below is a Fleetstar 2050 and was spotted behind near the Brockway Truck museum in Homer, NY. It now wears the lettering of a local contractor but beneath the hastily applied flat grey paint you can see spots of yellow that speak to a former past life of municipal work.

While younger than the Fleetstar the S1900 is at least 20 years old and boy does its paint job reflect every last year of it. I’ve seen this truck running around downtown and I believe it to be gas powered.

At the Dealer – Freightliner 114SD & 108SD

When I started this website in the spring of 2011 the Freightliner 114SD was the new truck on the scene and the 108SD was just a twinkle in someones eye. Now over two years later you don’t have to look very far to find one (or two!) at your local user of heavy trucks.

The Town of Wheeler has bucked the trend of orange colored trucks and selected an almost neon lime green color for their new 108SD. It looks good in this color and this is coming from a guy who usually finds the 108 to be a odd looking truck.

And a few more angles of the duo for old time sake. The Wheeler truck is sporting a Henderson setup while the orange unit is decked in Everest brands.

Green Jobs

Today Rick shares with us a variety of amazing photos he shot while working wind power and rigging jobs across the country. Browse through the gallery below and see if you can identify which photos come from the right coast and which shots come from the left coast. Hint. Pay attention to the cab and wheelbase lengths if the backgrounds don’t provide enough clues.

If you like what you see stay tuned there is more to come from Rick!

Flip a Coin – Falter Mack

Here is another case of a truck falling between the Still Working and the Lost and Found categories. I stopped by Falter Construction in Syracuse hoping to catch a glimpse of their Superliner and a few other trucks of their fleet. Grabbing a decent photo of the Superliner through the razor wire proved to be a challenge so I moved onto this old R-Model Mack. I flipped a coin to determine if this truck was still in use and according to Mr. Lincoln the answer was yes. Good ol’ Honest Abe.

Your Trucks – White 7400 COE

I was just starting to wonder how the restoration of Scott’s White 7400 was going when an email rolled into my inbox from him with an update. Timing is everything.

Cab tilted 8-19-13

As you can see “Big Brutus” is now wearing a fresh coat of black paint to match its red frame. You may have noticed a few Texaco items in the background of the 7400 photos so you can be assured that this paint scheme is not just a happy coincidence. Scott tells us.

I have decided to have “duel purpose” graphics on it as I built my garage to look like an old Texaco station several years back. So….It will be Black, white, & Red, which was the older LTL scheme. I can cover the door lettering for my “Davis & Sons Texaco” when I show the truck and use magnetic vinyl signs for the “LTL” logo. LTL painted these metallic green & red but I like the black scheme better so it still gives respect to its “Roots” I think.

Red and black are natural color partners if you ask me so how can you can go wrong? Rhetorical question by the way.

brutus almost done 8-17-13

I really like the looks of the White 7400 with its short wheelbase. You certainty don’t see many of these old trucks around anymore and even fewer that look like this one.

brutus almost done 8-17-13c

I’m starting to think Scott might need a larger garage in the near future. Click here to see that truck as it appeared a few months back.

Trucks of the Quarry

I happened upon this speciality truck earlier this summer and just had to turn around to grab a photo of it. I’m not sure of the make but a CCC (Crane Carrier) is probably a good guess. The name on the side was familiar to me as one part of local well drilling company Barber & DeLine. It wasn’t until I reviewed the photo that I realized this truck belongs to a different company that drills holes not for drinking water but for blasting apart quarry walls.

Another truck from earlier in the summer is this International boom truck belonging to Geneva Curbing and Concrete Co. From this picture you can see workers in the process of unloading new granite curbs. I’m not sure exactly what took place but moments after unloading a curb the crew reloaded the same piece and left the construction site. Wrong address maybe?

Fire Trucks For You

Well, I really don’t what to say about these two other than they are fire trucks and I like the way the look. The first truck comes to us from Alexandria Bay, NY. It seems like an older model to me based on that cab that opens in the rear.

The truck below and its origins are not as straight forward. When I first saw it at the dealer I assumed it belonged to an industrial plant based on the Plastisol Composites decal found on the side. A little googling reveals that Plastisol is actually a Dutch builder of emergency vehicle bodies. I never would have guessed. Knowledge truly is power.

*Reader Update*

Tom writes

The A-Bay unit is a mid to late 1980’s Pierce Arrow chassis with what appears to be a 100 foot rear mounted LTI (Ladder Tower’s Inc) aerial platform.  The Navistar chassis with the Plastisol body is a 2012 model equipped with a 1000 gpm rear mounted fire pump and 2000 gallon water tank. It is a demonstrator model built by Plastisol at their plant in Groton, New York.

Thanks Tom!

2013 Woodsmen’s Field Days – The Videos

Who doesn’t love a parade? As promised yesterday here is complete coverage of the parade that takes place during the Woodsmen’s Field Days. Logging trucks, loaders, skidders, lawn tractors, and more! The videos below are in no particular order. If you are looking for a fun drinking game (adults only!) do a shot of something every time you hear the crowd scream jake brake.

This video starts out with a International LoneStar and its attempt to please the crowds appetite for jake brake action. It doesn’t go well.
