1972 White 7400 Cabover

A few days ago I received some great photos from Scott who is the process of restoring a 1972 White 7400 cabover. The truck once belonged to Lyons Transporation Lines of Erie, PA. When restoration is complete the truck will sport former Lyons colors of red, light metallic green, black and white. To help with the visualization check out this link containing some photos of LTL trucks back in the day. The 7400 is powered by a Cummins VT903 and according to Scott is in perfect running condition.

Truck show no go 7-6-13

As time rolls by most old trucks earn a nickname. Some for the looks. Others for their performance. When it comes to Scott’s truck he affectionally refers to the White as “Brutus”, mostly for the beating in put on his knees during the journey home.

The ultimate goal is to have Brutus ready for the 2014 truck show season. So far I would say things look to be well on target. Great work by Scott in returning this old rig back to its former glory.

ATHS CNY Truck Show 2013

Yesterday the CNY chapter of the ATHS held their 16th annual classic truck show at Long Branch Park near Syracuse, NY.  If you have been to this site before your probably know about the show. There is always a nice mix of classic big rigs and pickups with a few military trucks and tractors thrown in for good measure. While I have seen many of the trucks in attendance before there is always something new to spy like this 1949 Flxible bus. When was the last time you saw one of these in running condition?

You can read more about this vintage machine by visiting the 2005 fall edition of HeadEnd, the Journal of the New York Museum of Transportation.

If you want to see more from this show and by more I mean every single vehicle that was in attendance check out the offical show gallery by clicking here. Stay tuned for video coverage later in the week.

On the Job – CSX Everything Edition!

Yesterday I stopped by a busy CSX job site in Liverpool, NY where crews were busy removing and replacing an at grade railroad crossing. I don’t travel this road on a regular basis but I understand from the locals that this crossing was in tough shape. I missed all of the track removal action but was able to grab a few neat shots of some loaders and backhoes in action. On hand were a few International 7600 tandem dump trucks and one Freightliner M2 112 setup to ride the rails. I spotted the M2 a few weeks back at Tracey Road Equipment but never got around to sharing the photos. CSX forced my hand with this project! It was interesting to see that a complete section of track was cut and removed intact, ties and all. I’m not sure if the plan is to reuse this section or not. Browsing the gallery below you may notice that one of the loaders had his tire slip off the rim. The operator did not look happy.

I don’t do too much train spotting so I found it interesting that the loaders and backhoes have some sort of license plate on their cabs with letters and numbers. I’m not sure what they are for but they are very train like. This was a very busy job site with a lot of equipment and manpower moving in every direction. That being said it was in the heart of small village so viewing spots were plentiful. Too bad I spent the morning at a heavy equipment auction instead of Liverpool!

The Del DeYoung Classic Car and Truck Collection

For regular readers of classic truck magazines such as Double Clutch and Wheels of Time today’s post might be old news but for everyone else consider it a public service announcement. July 25th will see the well known classic car and truck collection of Del DeYoung cross the auction block. Following Mr. DeYoung’s passing his family felt it was time for others to enjoy the great collection of vehicles he had amassed over a lifetime of collecting.

Browsing through the catalogue reveals a wide and diverse group of trucks (and cars) that you just don’t see too many of anymore. There is an impressive group of Diamond-T trucks available from nearly the entire life span of the company.

Western Star of the West

Another of the edition of the DDD Western Report today featuring a Western Star wearing a paint job you won’t soon see again. I don’t know about you but this truck reminds me of one that you would see at the Mid American Trucking Show. I can’t speak from personal experience but it just has the look about it. Thanks again Ryan!

Chevy Titan – Built to Stay Tough

After seeing that beautiful Chevy Titan at the ATCA Macungie show last month my day dreams were preoccupied with seeing more pristine examples of this overlooked truck. My friends at eBay came to the rescue when the provided a five dollar voucher toward any purchase. Combining their coupon with some left over PayPal funds I was soon the proud owner of this brochure detailing the 80’s Chevy Titan. Click any of the pictures below to view a larger version.

Peterbilt 367 Crane Truck

Many years ago I uploaded a video of classic Peterbilt truck from an ATHS show in Colorado. By mistake I added the leter U to the Peterbilt name. Some of the comments I received on that video because of my misspelling still haunt me to this day.

I believe the truck you see below is a 367 model. It was being used to lift air conditioning units to the top of the three story building you see in the background. Easy lifting for this crane.

Josall is a new name to me but apparently they have been long established in the Syracuse area.

On the Job – Mack CL700

Now this is a nice setup for hauling dumpsters, a Mack CL700. Belonging to Robinson Roll Off this Mack was a site for sore eyes on an otherwise bland truck spotting day.
