2017 Broome County Fair
This is what summer in a America is all about. Truck pulls and county fairs. Deep fried Oreo’s and pale skin turning an uncomfortable shade of red. This past weekend I made my way back to the Broome County Fair for the 2017 Truckers Pride and Polish event. A mini truck show and parade takes place followed by a round of truck pulls that include the average Joe big rig right up to professional pullers. As in years past this Mack Superliner with a E9 made a good showing. A spectator in the crowd let us in on this jewel. The E9, pistons as big as tomata cans!
Indeed. Video tomorrow…hopefully.

Return to Iowa
I usually don’t use a tripod or any type of mount when shooting video. You might already know this my video induce motion sickness when you watch. Heading to the ATHS National Convention a few months back I brought along a tripod and video camera in hopes of catching as much of the show as I could. This way I could shoot both video and photos at the same time. I think it worked out rather well as the video below will show. An attempt was made to edit out the golf carts but that would be like going to the beach and trying not to get sand on your feet. Not going to happen!
Autocar Mondays – 1966 DC9364
Autocars have always been a crowd favorite on Daily Diesel Dose even before Autocar Mondays. Back in 2012 we took a look at this 1966 DC9364 seen at the Empire State Antique Truck Association annual show in Stafford, NY. This two day long truck show always plays host to a great collection of trucks and tractors. Sadly I won’t be able to make it to the show this year but there is still time for you! Make plans to attend now and enjoy a full day of activity.
I don’t know about you but I think this truck looks just about perfect with it’s faded paint and various dents. Just what an old Autocar should look like. And look, there is even video! The wind noise gets a little better toward the end when you get to see this old truck ride off into the early morning sun.

The Old Tractor
I’ve heard some rumors that sales of new farm tractors are flat while the market for older machines remains strong. In this modern age of electronics some manufacturers, John Deere specifically, have made it nearly impossible to perform “unauthorized” repairs on their tractors. Without specific software keys the owner of the tractor is essentialy locked out of their machine. Thanks to our friends in the former Soviet Republics hacks are now available through invite only back door forums providing owners with the digital keys necessary to repair their tractors. The entire debate is fascinating and worth the read over here at Vice.
Anyway, I’m not sure about the real market factors that are at play in the used tractor realm but I’m all for keeping the old iron around for as long as possible. I came across this pair of old IHC farmhands a few weekends back as they rested in a field.
One thing is for sure….no one is shutting these beasts down through a satellite uplink.

DHS Diecast Open House
Urgent programming alert! This weekend is the DHS Diecast open house and auction super show! If you enjoy diecast models and other equipment replicas this is the event for you. The trucks and heavy equipment that inspire these replicas also make an appearance to help create a great time for both the experienced and casual collectors.

100 Years of Oshkosh
2017 marks the 100th year anniversary of the Oshkosh Corporation. Over the years the company has built a reputation for producing heavy duty trucks capable of clearing airports runways, pulling armored tanks through the mud and generally doing some of the hardest work out there. If you were lucky enough to be in the City of Oshkosh this past weekend you were treated to a parade highlighting this diverse history when over 60 vehicles representing the past, present and future took to the street.
I actually learned much from this parade. I had no idea that JLG and Jerr-Dan were part of the Oshkosh family. The more you know the more you grow.
1997 Christmas Special
As you know now the CNY Chapter of the ATHS held their annual show a few weekends ago on the shores of beautiful Onondaga Lake. As dictated by the laws of nature I was there bright and early to catch all the action. However, my wife is not bound by the same laws and showed up in the mid afternoon. Paying her way through the gate she received a raffle ticket that later turned out to be a winner. She was thrilled to welcome yet another piece of truck memorabilia into our home. Thrilled!
And now you can share in that same thrill as I take you through a rambling review of the 1997 Citgo toy tanker truck complete with realistic engine and brake sounds!
Red Headed Step Children
The acquisition of White Motor Company in the early 80’s by Volvo and the subsiquent purchase of GM’s heavy truck operations led to a confusing time as far as nameplates are concerned. On their slow evolution to becoming Volvos the early WhiteGMC trucks have slowly faded away are routinely overlooked by truck fans as being some sort of unholy creation. That’s too bad because these trucks really aren’t that hard to look at. This White WC made it through the years fairly unscathed until recently I would guess but is now showing signs of neglect.
Also from the WC line is this truck working with a bridge repair crew. I spotted this near an I-81 exit and immediately knew it was worth a picture. Some day when all cars and trucks drive themselves the children of the future will be amazed and disgusted with human operated vehicles.
Autocar Mondays – DC97 with Sleeper
John sent in this interesting photo of an Autocar DC97 that he spotted south of Cortland while rail fanning. My first thought upon seeing the photo was if the Cortland referenced in the photo credit was the Cortland? As in Cortland, New York better known as Huskie Town USA? Turns out the answer is yes. Who knew such a great an unique looking rig was in my backyard right under my own nose.
I wouldn’t worry to much about the fate of this truck as it appears to be heading in the right direction with cleaned up rims and new shoes all the way around. It looks like someone has been working on the sheet metal too. When finished this rig should be a real head turner. If you have any info on it drop me a line.
