Ford Heavy Trucks

I’m a Ford Truck man, that’s all I drive…ain’t no doubt my king of the mountain’s built Ford Tough.

Sorry, I’ll try to avoid using Toby Keith lyrics in the future but I make no promises. The video below is something of a who’s who of Ford Truck models. We’ve go the LTL 9000, the WT9000, Louisville models, and more!

Speaking of Fords, the Courier Journal has a nice series of photos spanning the decades from when the the Louisville Kentucky plant was responsible for heavy truck building.

Transit Mix Concrete

We all know that Hollywood likes to recycle ideas what with reboots, sequels, prequels, and shared universes. If a movie made money in the past in certainly can do it again. While that train of thought is great for studio executives it robs us of potentially new and exciting films. We’ve gone through the pirate phase, survived vampire addiction, suffered through young adult dystopian futures and have now entered the age of comic book movies. But what is next? I would like to suggest to you an untapped reservoir of rich story telling, NYC and its past (maybe present?) cut throat concrete industry.

Case in point, Transit Mix Concrete, the successor in one form or another of Colonial Sand and Stone. You would think the island of Manhattan would be awash in concrete producing facilities but in the early 1980’s just two productions plants were to be found and they were owned by the same man, Edward J. Halloran. Along with Transit Mix, Halloran also purchased Certified Concrete and Big Apple Concrete Corporation. Combining the assets of the three companies resulted in Mr. Halloran, also known as Biff, controlling near 100 % of the ready mix industry in Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens. The NY Time reported in 1982 that the concrete prices were on average 70 percent higher than any other city in the Northeast. Federal and City authorities soon had enough and began a wide reaching investigation into the concrete empire that had deep mob connections, specifically to the Genovese crime family. In attempt to break the concrete strangle hold NYC decided to publicly solicit and subsidize outside companies. Only one organization took the chance, a Maryland owned company operating under the name West 57th Street Concrete Company. It should come as no surprise that this venture did not last as it was plagued with “problems” and lawsuits. Eventually the contract was cancelled without producing a noticeable amount of material. Crime and time eventually caught up with Biff and his underworld connections. In 1987 Halloran was convicted of Federal racketeering charges and sentenced to 13 years in prison. Four years later a new trial was granted and after a series of plea deals the concrete king was released with time served. He was last seen in driving his convertible Rolls Royce Silver Cloud to his new home in Florida. He never arrived and no trace of existence has ever be discovered.

The Mob, larger the life owners, crusading public law enforcers, the trucks! All taking place in front of the rich back drop that is New York City. Summer block buster if you ask me. Someone better get on the phone and put aside some Crane Carriers for when filming takes place. Ryan knows were a few originals are located.

Transit Mix Concrete

A U.S. Federal Court eventually sold all of the assets of Transit Mix and Certified Concrete to the Quadrozzi Concrete Corp which ended up having trouble of its own but that is a story for another day. Thanks to Ryan for the photos and back story and thanks to Ted for his research as well.

I suggest checking out the links below for the full details of the story. Interesting reads all around.

The Show Continues

Big wheels keep on turning. The photos today are from all over the show grounds of the most recent ATHS national convention. This Kenworth was seen in the controlled chaos of the registration line. Looks like a mercury sleeper out back. Neat ride there.

American Truck Historical Society

Always head turners and conversation starters, a pair of Detroit powered race trucks.

Detroit Diesel Race Trucks

Did you watch the movie Maximum Overdrive as a child? If you did there is chance that this style Western Star may evoke feelings of nostalgia or fear.

Maximum Overdrive truck

I first recall seeing this particular Diamond-T as the ATHS national show in Springfield four long years ago. This time I was able to catch a few minutes of it on film.

Autocar Mondays – DC and DK

Today we have two prime examples of historic Autocar models. The DC and the DK. Take a look at this truck and tell me you don’t want one of your own. Immaculate! And built for heavy duty work.

Autocar DC Truck

Check out this setup with a winch and Talbert ramps. Load em up heavy. This truck can handle it.

Talbert ramps

This DC was fairly quiet at the show. I was hoping for a more beastly rumble but you can’t have it all I suppose. Some speculation exists that this truck was possibly repowered in later years due to the large and seemingly custom mounted Farr air cleaner on the side.

Autocar DC

Short video of it cruising.

Fast forward to 1986 and this DK-64B of Colombo Transportation Lines.

I don’t have too many angles of this one but I did grab an interior shot of the cab.

Another short video.

Catching Up

Working through more ATHS York footage with the return of the genuine Australian Mack Valueliner. Just listen to that V-8 rumble. It must sound great on the open road. Over 3 million miles on this machine! Incredible.

I’m also still working on the footage from the registration area. It’s never ending. But that is a good thing. The video for today is like a choose your own adventure type of book. Autocar or Mack. Dodge or Diamond Reo. Cabover or conventional. The choice is yours!

I always seemed to make the wrong choice in those books leading to an early death. 🙁

United Transit Mix

How about some more coverage from Ryan’s trip to the big city and beyond. The focus today, United Transit Mix. Let’s start right off with a CCC mixer. Uniquely NYC. If you like the paint splatters on the drum check out this story. Try not to get angry when you see the trucks described as boring.

CCC Cement Truck

You can’t run a ready mix company in the Big Apple without Mack Trucks. Specifically DM’s. Seriously. It’s against the law just like over sized sodas.

United Transit Mix

Looks like stuff is just laying all over the streets in the city. What a wondrous place it must be. Despite the numbers of trucks seen in the photos Ryan tells us the majority of the fleet was still out for the day.

International Transtar

I saw some really nice International Transtar 4300’s in York and I even managed to take a few photos. Check out this photogenic pair.

International Transtar 4300

If memory serves most were Detroit powered. No need to wonder about this truck as long as your ears aren’t plugged. You may remember it from last years Macungie coverage.

Another one.

International Transtar4300

Now in this video there is a really nice Transtar complete with a bright yellow paint job and cool looking eagle motif. I never got a picture of it but a photo pales in comparison to the real thing. By the way, this was one of the easiest videos I have ever put together. I simply cut off nine seconds of shaky camera at the start and that was it. In this case quantity equals quality.

ESTRA 2015 Tow Show

On the final day of the 2015 ATHS Show another fun event was taking place over 300 miles away, The Empire State Towing and Recovery Association 2015 Tow Show. I usually don’t have conflicting show problems until late July or early August. Thankfully our old friend Dan was able to stop by and grab some excellent shots.

Kenworth T880 Rollback

Heavy duty rotators = $$$

Kenworth Rotator

This year the show was held on the grounds of the Six Flags Great Escape. Fun for the entire family. I wish I had more insightful comments but I don’t so enjoy the photos. Thanks again Dan!

Dodge Bighorns and PowerWagons

Dodge Bighorns, something of rarity nowadays. The story is quite different when it comes to ATHS shows. They almost become common place and easily ignored. Nah, not really. Fans of Dodge big rigs, this video is for you.

Is it possible that I’ve also become jaded by the sight of Brockway trucks? I guess I’m spoiled with Huskie Town USA and their annual Brockway celebration just a short 30 minute drive from my front door. I don’t think I’ve even posted a single shot of the Brockways seen at the show yet. Shameful. Here is a video to make amends.

As I mentioned before I had three “choke points” at the show that I bounced between thanks to a rented golf cart. Walking is for suckers. Below are some shots from the registration line, photo area and unloading zone.

Harley Davidson International Lonestar

The red and white LoneStar was used by Ice Road Trucker Alex Debogorski to give rides around the truck. I got him to beep the horn at me during one pass. I am now famous by extension! Another interesting note, the black and white Peterbilt apparently was a test rig for Mobil Delvac and was used by Stewart Haas Racing.
