2015 CNY ATHS Truck Show

I’ve attended the CNY ATHS chapter show every year for the past ten years. It was an impressive streak but one that came to and end this past weekend when I found myself in the Garden State for a number of days. Thankfully my dad was still around to grab a few photos and videos of the festivities. Over the years we’ve seen a lot of coverage from this event on Daily Diesel Dose with many of the trucks being repeats from the prior shows. There’s nothing wrong with that but seeing new trucks is always exciting. This Brockway plow truck is a perfect example.

Brockway Snow Plow

A very interesting truck for sure and a great survivor. Exact model is unknown but based on that grill and front sheet metal this has to be early to mid 50’s at the most. The cab is throwing me off for some reason, it seems to be a newer style compared to the rest of the truck? If you know, let me know. Below is video of it arriving to the show. Hope you like Neil Diamond.

Everyone loves a good barn find. This 1936 International C30 was found in Lincoln Nebraska. You can still see faint markings for Meadow Gold Dairy on the doors and stake bed.

International C30 Truck

A nice clip video of the events.

Below a gallery with a few more shots of the Brockway plow, another ’76 Brockway 761, a few more shots of the International and a nice “mini” 1977 Peterbilt 359 pickup. I think my dad did a pretty good job with the coverage don’t you?

More photos can be found here. Thanks Andy.

More From York

Am I beating a dead horse with this ATHS National Convention coverage? Hopefully not. Over the months we’ve seen plenty of cool old iron but lets take a look at some very unique pieces. A pair of Diamond-T’s caught easily stood out among the crowd.

Diamond-T Tow Truck

This 1933 311 was done up to resemble a Caterpillar service truck. Very cool. It had toolboxes full of the vintage tools you would need to work on 30’s era equipment.

Diamond-T T 311 truck

Plenty of Mack Superliners made the journey to York either as show trucks or haul rigs. Sometimes both.

Mack Superliner

Below, more random footage from around the truck registration area. Keep an eye out for a Mack that made me second guess where I was standing.

More, always more.

International Harvester Bulldozers

Take a look at this, two International TD (exact model uknown) bulldozers in pristine shape in the year 2015. Hard to believe your own eyes.

International TD Bulldozer

These two machines belong to Fisher Construction, a local company specializing in rail construction services. Fisher has a whole army of equipment on call 24/7 to respond to rail emergencies.

International bulldozer

I’m not sure what these two are doing as nothing appears to be off the tracks. It’s possible they already did their work and waiting for the trip back home.

Fisher Construction

Back in the dark days of winter we saw this pair working to place a Canadian National train back on the tracks. At the time I just assumed these were Caterpillar units of some kind. You know what they say about assumptions…

I wish I could tell you more about the make/year/vintage but I am clueless. If any out there knows better please let me know!

Autocar Mondays – Consolidated Concrete

Rhode Island might be the smallest state in the union when it comes to square footage but they might just have some of the best taste in ready mix trucks. Check out this fleet of Consolidated Concrete.

Autocar Cement Trucks

Yeah, this aint some 1988 promo photo this is from now, like June 2015 now. I’m packing up my bags and moving to Rhode Island!

Consolidated Concrete

And for an extra special treat how about his old girl. Age, vintage, model are all unknow. The water tank reads Worthington. Have a guess? Let me know in the comments below.

Thanks Ryan for the share. Believe it or not he found even more A-Cars in journey. Come back soon to find out out what’s next.

LeTourneau Sno-Freighter

They say necessity is the mother of all invention. When the particular necessity happens to be the detection of Soviet Union bombers carrying nuclear warheads old mother invention is bound to have some outrageous children of her own. Remember those awesome Mack trucks used to ferry men and supplies to the distance radar bases that would make up the DEW Line? It was A land where man is closer to his God. Apparently they had some help in the form of this LeTourneau Sno-Freighter.

LeTourneau Sno-Freighter

David came across this unique piece of truck and American history just sitting by the road in Fox, Alaska. Can you believe this massive beast has just been abandoned and left to rot? Alaska Freight Lines had the contract in the early 1950’s to transport supplies for the construction of the before mentioned DEW Line. They commissioned heavy equipment specialist Le Tourneau Technologies to build a one of a kind land train capable of fording semi frozen rivers and deep snow. Powered by two Cummins engines generating 800 HP the Sno-Freighter was capable of pulling 150 tons of material through temperatures as low as minus 68 degrees fahrenheit. Much like a rail based locomotive the diesel engines powered electric motors located on each of the 24 combined wheels of the power unit and the trailing wagons.

Here is a shot of the 88 inch tall, 38 inch wide tubeless tires that went flat long ago. Exposed is part of the gearing of the electric motor.

After completion of the DEW Line it was used to transport supplies for the exploration of the North Shore Oil fields. While the highly specialized nature of the Sno-Freighter made it so adept at its job it also was its greatest weakness. As the years rolled on spare parts became fewer and general maintenance costs increased. Eventually it was parked and left to rot by the side of the Steese Highway where it can be seen today.

What an ignominious fate for such a unique machine. If I had the green backs this rig would be rotting in my back yard. While you cry into your beer take a gander at how it once was in these old promotion films.

Part 2

We are in your debt David. Thanks for sharing.

At the Dealer – Spring/Summer 2015

I haven’t done a genuine at the dealer post in months so let us dust off yet another old chestnut of Daily Diesel Dose. The focus today? Freightliners and Western Stars. They are taking over the world.

Most new trucks arrive at dealer lots on the back of another new rig. In this case we have a new Cascadia pulling a Western Star 4700 with two more single axle Cascadias out back.

Freigthliner Cascadia

The new 5700XE is just about to start hitting the streets in noticeable numbers. The only ones I’ve seen on the road so far have been used to pull new inventory to dealers. I can think of a few local companies that would look good in this red.

Western Star 5700XE

I’m not sure how new (if at all) this Coronado SD is but it looks bad ass so I’ll allow it.

Freightliner Coronado SD

In the gallery below you’ll find some new 122 SD’s, another Coronado in dump truck form, some 4700’s fresh off the truck (almost) along with a few other 4700’s of various shapes and sizes.

Journey Along the Alcan and More

As we saw a few days ago David recently spent some cruising across the country eventually heading up through Canada to Alaska. Along the way he came across some very neat vehicles like this Kenworth wrecker AKA The Heavy Hooker. This vintage machine was found sitting alongside the most recent Autocar Mondays candidate. Little is know about either truck other than they have a coolness factor of 10.

Heading down the Alcan Highway road crews were making the most of their short construction season.

Alcan Highway

Back in the lower oil fields of Saskatchewan pipeline crews never have an excuse to miss work due to weather or bad roads.

4x4 School Bus

Another 4×4 powered vehicle in the form of this old Ford. Are you detecting a pattern? Northern climates are fun to live in!

Ford Tow Truck

Great photos from what appears to be an amazing trip. One more very unique vehicle is on the way. Stay tuned.

Record Breaking Attendance

If Darth Vader drove a semi truck with a headache rack it would like this.

Yes, here we go again with more 2015 ATHS York coverage. If you’re bored don’t worry, we are nearing the end…of photo coverage but no where near close when it comes to video. The Gus Propper family brought a whole slew of rigs to the show including those great looking B-Model Mack dump trucks and the trucks you see below.

R-Model Mack with sleeper

You can see the Mack from above, a sweet looking Peter and a ’59 B-61 with sleeper in the video below.

You may recall this jaw dropping International Transtar II from the cabover madess coverage of last month. Now you can listen to it growl in real life. One can only imagine the sound it makes while running flat out down the open road.

And many more.

Where the Plows At?

Can you believe the last time plow related trucks graced the pages of Daily Diesel Dose it was May 14th? Insane! Time to get back my roots. I’ve had some decent plow photos pile up over the past few months with all the truck shows and other summer fun time activities. Here we have a Kenworth T-800 with massive plow gear and an equally large spreader body. Government plates are found on this bad boy suggesting a life spent on runways of the local Air National Guard base.

Kenworth C-500 Snow Plow

More stuff heading to the auction lot for the New York State Thruway. This old Mack was seen sitting near a row of new Western Stars and International WorkStar crew cabs. It’s still wearing Thruway logos but it’s only a matter of time before it is stripped down like the old 2574 right behind it. That dump body looks really nice so I’m guessing it won’t be going with the truck.

Mack RD Snow Plow

I spotted this presumably new Mack Granite for the Town of Cicero at the dealer a few weeks back. I would later see it at the local commercial truck tire shop. New trucks are expensive in more way than one.

Mack Granite Snow Plow

Here is everyone’s favorite mini me truck, the International TerraStar complete with wing.

International Terrastar

And so much more! WorkStars, WorkStars, WorkStars! Georgetown, Brookfield, Parish, Marcy, all towns that at one time had monorails.

Oh yeah, almost forgot about this truck from the Town of Clay wearing spokes upfront for that retro look.

Freightliner Plow Rig

Might as well share these Star Car (plus 1 Volvo) photos as well. Man, I had really fallen behind! Town of Reading, Constantia, Freetown and Ostego.

Autocar Mondays – Midnight Sun

This past weekend I had some unexpected travel plans come up that took me away from the internet for a few days. Technically I missed Autocar Mondays but the truck I have to share today is so cool that I don’t see the need to wait an entire week.

Autocar Tow Truck

How about that? David G. recently finished some travelling as well. He went a little further than my eight hour drive to Virginia when he made a ten day trek across the country eventually arriving in Alaska. That’s where he spotted this Autocar wrecker in the small settlement of Tok. I can’t seem to find any identifying features on the wrecker body. Any experts out there?

Alaskan Autocar

Very cool find! Many more amazing finds to come from David’s trip in the coming days.
