Two for One Special

Last week I went to a surplus auction for a local ready mix company, The Saunders Companies. The auction catalog caught my eye with more than a few well maintained heavy duty Macks and other pieces of equipment. Just like those 5 for 5 Arby Roast Beef sandwich deals this was to good a scene to pass up. There also was the added benefit of the auction being held right near the Saunders active quarry and mix plant. Instead of the trucks coming to me I would go to the trucks. To start, here is what I saw at the sale.

Macks! Now I won’t pretend to be an expert on used truck prices but I think there were some deals to be had here. Yes, the trucks were well used but also well cared for. Mack engines, trans, and suspension here folks. Damage and abuse was minimal for concrete trucks. From what I recall none of the Macks sold for more that 11,000 bucks. They went to a buyer from NJ buy the name of Uncle. The B & B Ford trucks were also in great shape. I’ve never heard of this company before so I’m not sure if they were a local company bought out by Saunders years ago or what. The ended up going to a buyer from CT. I was also interested in the old belly dump trailers as they are a sight you don’t see on the roads of CNY these modern days.

The auction on Friday was one of two set to occur on Saunders that weekend. The second auction was set to contain two old Brockways and a number of Vintage Mack models from the 1920s. Somehow this Brockway snuck into Fridays lineup. I hung around to see what it would go for but the truck was pulled at the last moment in favor of the Sunday auction. From what I could deduce this truck once belonged the Town of Union, NY. It was equipped with a Sincard water tank powered by a Continental gas engine. A Detroit 6-71 (presumably) was found under the hood along with a birds nest by the air intake. Who says these old trucks aren’t friendly to the environment? Overall the sheet metal of this truck was in rough shape.

While waiting for the auction to start I wandered back to the front of the property to check out the stream of traffic coming and going from the plant. Mixer trucks came and went at regular intervals with dump trucks from Saunders and surrounding municipalities arriving at the same pace. I took up residence in the shade of block pile and enjoyed the flow of traffic. At one point a slow moving convoy from Nelson Tree service passed by with two off road boom trucks. Eventually it was time to leave. On the way out I took the opportunity to watch operators clean out their trucks from previous runs. I also snapped a few photos of some other vintage rides. GMC General anyone from Cortland Ready Mix? How about a Superliner? A niffty old Trailmobile trailer setup as a power station also caught my eye.

Before leaving I watched at this Cat loader filled up a few dump trucks with broken concrete and soil. Off to provide fill for some other project no doubt. At the last possible moment the little pickup entered the scene and stayed the entire time I was shooting. You can’t win them all.

Autocar Mondays – Eight Lane Autocar

I mentioned last month that during a recent trip to NJ I spied more than a few great looking Autocars. I find it amazing that trucks I would drool over if found here in upstate are fairly common place in the NY/NJ metro area. You guys down there have no idea that you are living the dream! This Autocar first caught my eye early in the visit. I would pass it many times swearing that I would grab a shot of it before leaving NJ. It would be a tricky one to catch as it sat in the middle of a toll plaza surrounded by 10 tens lanes of heavy traffic on either side. On the very last day I figured the time had come to take a stab at the Autocar. I took up position in the back seat of my car and instructed my wife to stay in the left lane as much as possible. No small feet in Jersey as that is the lane reserved for 100+ mph traffic. She did great and fell back on her roots of the state that taught her how to drive. As we got close to the truck I was dismayed to find four more lanes of merging traffic right in the line of my shot. Oh well. I’m sure the people in the car next to me wondered what the hell I was doing.

And there it is. My sole Autocar catch of the entire trip. It turned out good enough all things considered. I can tell you that cab reads JMS. The fine print underneath is too blurry to read at high resolutions. Can anyone out there fill in the blanks?

*Service Note* The B-Roll is back! I’m not sure how long it was down, maybe a few weeks? Perfect time to stop by and check it out. There is bound to be something new!

Locked Out

I’m not too sure what happened but for the past 24 hours or so I was not able to access this site. No matter what computer or cell phone I tried the page would never load. I figured there was a major behind the scenes problem with my webhost or worse…database corruption. Perhaps the problem I’ve experienced with the B-Roll page had spread? I eventually gave up for the evening and went to bed assuming the worst but hoping for the best. The next day I went to an auction at Saunders Concrete and had a few moments to check my phone. To my surprise I was able to pull up the site. Hours later I went home only to find the page down again. Turns out the site was up the entire time but somehow blocked on my home network.  Go figure. As mysteriously as the problem began it left. Hopefully never to return. So here is what we all should have seen yesterday.

Look familiar? A few weeks ago we saw the same tanker hooked to International. Now a Northern Mack is at the helm. Weird combo of local trucking firms.

So if you like this Mack you’ll like what I have to bring you in a few days from the auction previously mentioned. I also have a fix for the B-Roll gallery as well. Stay tuned!

At the Dealer – Kawasaki 95Z7

Oh you have 20 inch rims on your car? That’s cute. Take at look at this rubber and then tell me how you feel. Inadequate? Understandable.

Kawasaki 95z7 loader

I came across this new Kawasaki 95Z7 at Tracey Road Equipment the other day. This model represents the latest in loader technology when it comes to the long lived Z Link Series. Reading through the brochure I found a few interesting points. Namely, the engine uses a combination of EGR and diesel particulate filters to meet emissions regulations. A strategy recently tried by International that failed in a spectacular fashion. I also learned that Kawasaki is the oldest, ongoing manufacturer of rubber-tired, articulated wheel loaders in the world. There is plenty of other mumbo jumbo that goes over my head but for the operators and mechanics out there you may enjoy the read. Click here.

Summer Reading

Back in the frozen month of February we learned of a new book series chronicling the prestigious history of the Northwest Engineering Company. As you should know, Volume I is already in print and ready for purchase. It will also be available at this year’s Antique Historical Construction Equipment Association national meet in Canandiagua, NY. By now you are probably hooked on the book and craving more Northwest goodness that only authors Matt E. Folsom and Mario J. Torres can deliver. Good news is in the wind as I have learned Volume II and III are well underway.

Archive Book #2 Cover Final coming soon (791x1024)

Volume II is currently targeted for a Christmas 2014 or early spring 2015 release date. This edition covers the classic years with much information regarding Murphy Diesels.

Archive Book #3 Front ComingSoon (791x1024)

Volume III is looking at a release date around the 2015 HCEA show or possibly Christmas of that same year. As updated information becomes available I will share. In the mean time remember, reading is brain food!

2014 CNY ATHS – The Videos

Time for a heaping helping of video to start your Tuesday morning.

Here is a Brockway I don’t recall seeing before the show this past weekend. It’s a 1963 model 260 with a very nice sounding Cummins.

Here is the 1966 Mack R-600 that was the Presidents Choice for the 2014 show.

And we end, for today, with a Detroit powered race truck. I was standing to the rear of this truck when at one point I felt something coating my arms. I thought the rain I finally started in earnest but it turned out to be soot from the stacks! I guess his diesel particulate filter is missing. 😉

2014 ATHS CNY Show

Another year, another great truck show hosted by the Central New York chapter of the American Truck Historical Society. Despite a gloomy forecast and persistent rain a good number of trucks made it to the show. Plenty of new faces and rigs for all to enjoy. If you like Peterbilt 359s this was the show for you! One of my personal favorites was this heavily modified International 4700. It just looks like a fun truck to cruise in or haul some toys around. A perfect rig for those far away truck shows. The spoke wheels up front with chrome lugs and center cap really help to pull off the look and work well with the plenty of tasteful custom touches throughout. Did you ever think the humble 4700 series could look so cool?

Continuing their tradition of excellence the Tackaberry Collection brought out their better than showroom quality Peterbilt. There are literally no flaws in this truck. None. If you find one I’ll have no choice but to call you a liar.

The Presidents Choice for the show this year was this 1966 Mack R600 owned by Joe Mento. Purchased used for a mere 500 dollars in the 80’s this bulldog is still running strong on its original Mack 711 diesel engine. No rebuilds here. This truck is a true time capsule in looks and smell! Seriously, half the appeal of this truck is soaking in all the details including that grease/fuel/work smell that only a real old truck can posses.

As I said many great trucks and people were in attendance and I didn’t even come close to covering most of it. Take a moment to browse through the gallery below and pick your own favorite. As the week goes on the show will come back to life in video form. You’ll be able to watch me get covered in soot from a Detroit Diesel rain storm or enjoy some of the many 359’s I mentioned from above.

Drywall Nightmares

Yesterday I spent some time patching a large section of my living room wall and ceiling that was destroyed slowly over the months by a slow leak from the bathroom above. During the cutting, taping and mudding these two trucks crossed my mind as they deliver the modern building material that is known as drywall. If you’re ridding in this truck you’ll get to know your coworkers very well.

A few days later I caught this truck unloading further down the street. Only a two man crew this time so no personal violations in this cab.

Pick Your Poison

The other day I made a wrong turn and happened across this well worn Ford LTL 9000.

14631437122_eeccfa075c_b

Sporting an old school logo of Ferdula Graval Products this Ford looks very well worn. It’s chained to a motorcycle for extra protection or maybe I have the order of things backwards. The bike is for sale but I think we all know both of these vehicles can get you into trouble of various sorts. Which one would you take?

Lost and Found – White 7000

Today David shares with a photo of a 1967 White 7000. Based on the picture I wouldn’t blame you if you thought it was just the cab sitting on the ground but in reality the truck has sunk that much into the earth over the years. One belonging to a local paving company David has found memories of this truck and the Detroit 6-71 that once provided the muscle. Probably the worst part about this truck is that Peterbilt logo on the grill. 😉
