August Snow Plow Update

Just like clockwork it’s time for the monthly (during the summer only) update of snow plows encountered by me and this time around a few other people. Continuing the trend of the past two years the new Western Star plows of all models and trim levels continue to fill the dealer lots. I have to admit, they are a good looking truck and from all reports they handle and ride rather well.

Adding to the re-purposed category is this International of New England Motor Freight setup to plow their Syracuse, NY terminal. The tinfoil around the hood prevents interference from UFO’s that regularly cross the area.

Plenty of trucks in the gallery below still going through upfitting or upgrades for the upcoming season. Check out this Mack for the Town of Trenton.

In the gallery below you will find a new truck for the Village of Manlius, NY, a couple of Western Star 4700s, two great looking 4900’s, a Mack Granite from the Town of Sullivan, Town of Otisco AWD Western Star 4800, a former Town of Manlius International Paystar now with the Village of Minoa, a new International TerraStar, an International from the NYS Canal Corporation and two rigs from the Town of Dewitt Highway Department.  The final four photos were taken with my Windows Phone when I forgot to put the memory card back into my digital camera. For the most part the phone did okay but really is not better than a backup device. A Town of Hastings Sterling, a new International DuraStar, a Town of Clay Freightliner FLD and a Town of Manlius Western 4700 make up this lot.

And last but not least we have this great looking 1977 Brockway 761 that now works for a plumbing company. Brian shares this photo and tells us the truck has 250 Cummins and 4×4 air shift transmission. He says it works every week and rarely lets the current owner down. Great catch!

The 1000th Post

Quick everyone look! It’s the 1,000th post! Like the odometer rolling over on your semi truck at the million mile mark Daily Diesel Dose has reached a milestone. Phew! I always said when I reached 1,000 I would shut the site down. When I made that pledge I never figured things would get as far as they did. Too bad really. I’ll miss this page but I’ll have plenty of free time for other pursuits like knitting and creating 14th century German poetry.

0_O

Naaaah, I’m just kidding. Too many great things have happened around here over the past three years to just walk away now. I’ve been strolling through the archives of the page to get an idea of where it all began and maybe where the page is heading. Some new features have emerged while others have silently died. Remember the Know Your Diesels category? No? That’s okay, it only had one post. The days of transcribing my thoughts on Ice Road Truckers seems to be a thing of the past as well. The new season is now 3 or 4 episodes in and I haven’t mentioned it once on the site! To be honest I didn’t even know it was back on TV. Some ideas just don’t pan out while others take years to show up. For instance, Autocar Mondays may seem like an established feature but it didn’t debut until March of 2013 and it took another three months to gain its now established headline….after a 3 month hiatus! Thanks to the efforts of many loyal visitors I’ve been able to keep it alive.

Acceptance Speech

Speaking of visitors, you (the visitor) are the main reason this page is still around. I don’t mind talking to myself but after awhile you start to get lonely and wonder what it’s all about. Over the past three years I’ve meet and interacted with some great folks. Regular contributors from day one like Dan, Ryan, Andy, Joe, and Jim help me fill in the many holes on this page with photos of trucks and equipment that one person sitting behind a desk most of the day can not capture. I lean on them heavily during the dark winter months when my natural go to locations and activities are frozen over. A special thank you to Clarence for opening his personal collection of classic trucks to my prying eyes. Not only is he a regular contributor to Autocar Mondays but he also let me behind the wheel of his Brockway 361 wrecker. Speaking of Brockways, let’s all give Kyle a hand for the part he played in the very first Daily Diesel Dose ride along when he offered up the services of his 257. I still watch both videos on a regular basis. Great times and memories for all involved.

Behind the Curtain

Over the years I’ve let the site take its own course with photos and videos of various events taking the main roll of daily activity. Sometimes I wonder if the page has become something of a glorified photo blog with a snow plow photo every other day! Taking a look behind the scenes and you will find that 98% of the time there is nothing scheduled for the next day until 10 or 11 P.M. the night before…if I’m lucky! I suppose I should have thought harder when I decided to put the word daily in the site name. The pressure! I’ve found that carrying a camera on me at all times is necessary to provide the content we all crave and love. According to Google on the most visited pages on the site is the one related to Semi Truck Racing. It pulls in more visitors than other topic and by far has the most comments of any post. Right now it is only bested by people searching for “Ex Municipal Heavy Duty Trucks For Sale”, hmmmm, imagine that!

Memory Lane

Thinking back over the past three years about the many topics I have covered a few jump right out as favorites in mind.

The operation and disassembly of a large Sany Crane from Auburn Crane and Rigging.

Stalking of OCDOT Plows.

Discovery of a GMC General, Brockway 359 and a White 3000

Prepping for St. Patricks Day

Demolition of Bristol Myers Squibb buildings, Part 2

As I dug through the archives I realized much more has happened around here than I remember! So what are your favorites? What would you like to see more of? Less off? Let me know in the comments below or email eric@dailydieseldose.com

Once again, thank you to everyone for stopping by and supporting this site. While it might be a lot of work to keep this place going it has never seemed so much like real work that I’ve wanted to stop. Check back sometime around 2017 for post 2,000!

Primping and Pulling

Lots of video today so find a comfortable seat and enjoy the show.

We’ll start with a Peterbilt that not matter how much weight the sled put down was always able to make a full pull. You’ll find this truck again in the parade video below. It looks to have air bags up front as the driver was bouncing the corners all around during the procession.

Here is a sample of the trucks that took part in the parade. I don’t have them all as I was late to the show. Some great footage of a Manitowoc dragline in action was the reason and a fair trade if you ask me.

I remember seeing this particular Brockway at the first King of Trucks show back in 2011. I liked it back then and I still like it now.

Any fans of E-9 powered Mack Superliners? *Spolier Alert* Full pull ahead.

The fun ends with this Brockway 762. Under the hood a Detroit Diesel 12V71 screams away. Allison Automatic on the floor.

Pride and Polish Parade

I’m fairly certain the Pride and Polish Parade has been taking place during the Broome County Fair for at least a few years now. I remember seeing flyers around and thinking about checking it but for one stupid reason or another I never made the journey. WOW! What a mistake on my part. Saturday I finally stopped by and I can say without a doubt this is a great event. It’s only five bucks and that gets you admission to the fair. Free parking. Insane. I arrived a few minutes late and found the parade already underway. Trucks of all types line up in single file along the track that rings the fair grounds and then proceed to pass in front of the grandstand to blast air horns, makes some smoke, and generally put on a good show. It’s one thing to see these fine machines in a static form but quite another to see them come to life. That’s half the reason I usually arrive at truck shows hours before the gates open so I can watch the rigs arrive. As you can see from the gallery below the weather was ideal. The sun was in the perfect spot for photos and videos and I sure do have a lot of both.

14586104439_8754a98170_b

Oh, did I mention your five bucks covered admission to a truck pull as well? Simply put if you don’t go to this show you are losing money.

14770471464_4ac301a9c4_b

From the people to the trucks everything came together to make a great afternoon. All the events started on time and ran with precision The track announcer had all the relevant information but knew when to let the trucks and drivers be the star of the show. 10 out of 10. Would attend again.

A huge thanks to the D.J. Smith Truckers Chrome Store for sponsoring this event. They put on a great event. Check back tomorrow for video!

Autocar Mondays – Clayton Block

I wasn’t lying when I told you New Jersey still had more than a few vintage Autocars running the streets. Today Joe shares with us a few photos to back up my wild claims and provide a glimpse of the models that represented the final decades of Autocar Trucks.

Originally searching for a 1970’s Diamond Reo mixer Joe happened across a small portion of the Clayton Block fleet. As you can see they still run many older trucks with a vast majority wearing the Autocar nameplate. First up is a 1988 DK with a Cummins NTC-300 and a 8LL transmission. At first I thought the side mirrors read Mack but upon closer inspection they do read White.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The somewhat rare and weird looking DS64 is well represented at Clayton. Here are trucks 97 and 96 with at least one other hiding out of frame to the left. Both are powered by the Cummins NTC 300 with 7LL transmissions.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

At last but not least we have one of the final models to wear the Autocar badge, the ACL64B. A Cat 3406C and a 8LL complete the setup.

A big thanks to Joe for sharing these exclusive photos. By the way, still no word on the Diamond Reo but the search will continue!

Manitowoc Dragline

Yesterday as I was heading to the Broome County Fair to check out a truckers parade and truck pull I noticed a large dragline at work. If you have ever traveled the stretch of I-81 between Binghamton and Cortland you’ve probably seen this very machine. Numerous aqua quarries (trademark pending) dot the landscape. Some have been mined out while others are active operations full of neat equipment.  I was excited about my great timing to catch one of these machines in action but just as I pulled into a convenient parking spot the operator put the machine into idle and took a break. What did I just say about timing? Thankfully it was only a stretch break and he was soon back at it.

14753079085_1039c60600_b

I hung around for a few cycles to watch the bucket plunge into the clear water and emerge moments later with gravel. The sound of the engine revving under load. The creak and groan of cables at work. It was hypnotic. If I didn’t have somewhere to go I would have stayed longer.

In the background of it all a Cat 980H buzzed back and forth from the pile of freshly extracted gravel. A scene no doubt repeated day after day during the road building season.

And that truck show I mentioned above? Fantastic! Full coverage on Tuesday!

Until the Hammer Falls

Last Saturday I went to the annual equipment auction held by Alex Lyon at their property in Canasota, NY. Like past years there was plenty of heavy equipment and trucks to go around. To my recollection I would say this was one of the larger auctions of the past two or three years. Ironically I took the smallest amount of videos and photos out of all my trips to this event. Remember, it’s quality, not quantity that counts. 😉

Amoung the fields there were more than a few “classic” pieces of Cat equipment. A large D8H dozer held court near one end of the auction lot. It was sandwiched between a dinky Cub Cadet ride-on mower and a F-250 pickup. It easily could have crushed both of them. Each time someone climbed aboard the D8H I secretly wished they would hit one if not both vehicles but everyone played it safe.

DSC06392 (1024x860)

The steel on this dozer was mind boggling. Take a look at the blade and the thickness of the material that is starting to curl. I don’t know if it hit something or that is just rust taking its toll but the metal is easily over 1/4 inch think. LOL WUT?! I stalked a couple of guys who trying out all the old equipment and compiled a video of their test runs. Enjoy as they evaluate a D6C, a 950 loader and the D8.

On the truck side of things there was an entire fleet of Peterbilt and Mack dump trucks but the jewel among them all was this 1989 Ford LTL9000.

DSC06409 (1024x937)

As you can this truck is in great shape. The grill is perfect. The fenders are straight. The cab is free of rust and sports a reflective glossy black paint job. Aluminum fenders out back work together with a sharp looking headache rack complete with strobes. The mechanical guts come in the form of a Cat 3406B diesel attached to a 13 speed. You just don’t find LTL’s like this one anymore. Case in point, the LTL I spotted a few weeks ago outside of Herkimer, NY. Walk around and cab view video below.

As is the case with some auctions you just have no idea the past life of the item you are bidding on. Was it abused? What problems are lurking below the surface? Often times you only have the most basic of details on which to place your thousand dollar winning bid. Other times you have more details than you can ask for. As is the case with the International Hough dozer.

DSC06390 (1024x854)

A note attached the cab told you all the critical details as well as some history.

This machine was bought brand new by the talc mine in Balmont, NY. The machine was bought to plow snow to keep the roads open in the winter.

And there you have it. Bid on my friends, bid on.

Other notables from the gallery below include a little orange truck used to move a car crusher around. For some reason it reminds me a vehicle that could do burnouts and wheelies. A 2012 Peterbilt 367 with only 1,300 miles. An Athey grader that reminds of drag racing tractor (is there such a thing?) and a bunch of other heavy equipment that just happened to catch my eye. You’ll notice a pair of Hanson machines in the gallery that were not part of the auction but guarding a large pile of millings. I figured they were nice enough to photograph.

At the Dealer – A Western Star or Two

Lots of brand new equipment at dealers all over the area recently. Yesterday we saw a few new Cats while today we take a look at some Western Stars (and Freightliners) at Tracey Road Equipment.

Look at this beautiful 4900 for Environmental Remediation Services Inc. No doubt this will be hooked to a lowboy in order to tow around giant demolition sheers, claw buckets and other cool looking destructive equipment. In fact, ERSI has a location a mere half a mile down the road from Tracey Road Equipment where the store all this great stuff. I’ve seen it behind a large fence. Sadly this fence makes for horrible photos but you can check out their website for full coverage.

Western Star 4900 Semi Truck

How about this nice lineup of brightly colored trucks? No white! The two red 122SD are future Weitsman Recycling trucks. Destined to be the largest scrap operation on the East Coast Weitsman buys small local operations and completely revamps facilities and equipment to enhance the customer experience. Smart money is on the orange truck being setup as plow. Who’d a thunk it.

At the Dealer – Nightmare of the forest

I’ve probably said this before but I don’t stop by Milton Cat in Syracuse enough considering all the awesome equipment they usually have on display. They just make it so easy to grab great photos. Look at this monster.

14718441081_a373354833_b

I looked up the name plastered on the side of this device but really couldn’t find much information at all. However, I’ve watched enough Ax Men and American Loggers to recognize a delimber/processor when I see one. In person it’s one mean and complex looking piece of equipment.

Also on the lot was this brand new 545C skidder. It almost looks too nice to head off into the woods.

Cat 545C Skidder

And last but not least is this odd looking Cat MH3049 material handler. Not only does the cab raise up to offer the operator a better view but it lowers to ground level for easy of access. Three points of contact not necessary. Just walk on in!

Cat MH3049 Material Handler

Thanks to the good people at Milton for making this possible.

*UPDATE* Dave did a little digging and found the name of the company and their website that produces the delimber. They go by the name of Quadco and have a website here. Thanks Dave!

Link Belt Cranes

Cranes. Much like words they have the power to build up or tear town. Deep thoughts on Daily Diesel Dose today. In this case, a Link Belt is helping to establish piles for a new hotel on the edge of the inner harbor. I really like the grill on this rig. Just a big a slab of flat faced awesome.

Link Belt Crane

On the topic of cranes I would like to share with you this cool catch of an old Crane Carrier sent in by Ed. Clearly a mixer truck in its past life it now hauls a grinder around a yard waste recycling center in Clifton Park, NY. It’s a cool catch. Most cement trucks don’t see a second life after the concrete work is done. Great catch Ed!
