2014 ATCA Macungie – The Videos

Time to serve up the video from the Macungie show this past weekend. The first flick starts off with a pair of tricked out Kenworths one of which is lettered up for a farm. To paraphrase my father when he saw these rigs, “what kind of farm are they running?!” Also in the video a massive Oshkosh wrecker arrives on the back of flatbed and some custom Pete’s come roaring down the street at full speed.

The next film is for cabover fans.

And we end, for today, with more Mack trucks.

2014 ATCA Macungie – The Photos

Today we finish up the photo coverage of the ATCA National meet in Macungie with the help of Tom and Dave. Despite our best efforts many trucks went uncovered. The show really is that large! This International Transtar was a sharp looking machine and one that could be heard from miles away.

How about that Oshkosh wrecker? Good choice for this years show with all the mud. I wonder if was called into action by the Saturday evening? Don’t forget to check out the Brockways from Russo Development. Too perfect for words. George Tackaberry once again raises the bar with a beautiful International truck and King trailer combo. Enjoy!

Tom was nice enough to share some of his photos from this years event. Here is his take. Photos just don’t tell the whole story regarding the green color of the Miss Geico rig. It’s like one giant safety vest.

Dave continues to help out with filling in the blanks. Enjoy his shots of the Smith fleet and more!

Tomorrow the videos! Thanks for sharing guys!

Autocar Mondays – Macungie Edition

There were more than a few Autocar trucks on hand for the 2014 ATCA national meet in Macungie this past weekend. I didn’t even come close to looking at them all let alone taking photos but I did grab a few. This single axle model caught my eye as it sat in the mud. Nothing wrong with a little mud on the tires if you ask me.

David also attended the show and was nice enough to email some photos of other A-Cars of the show field. The 1926 model seen in the gallery below came complete with two large boulders. As the story goes the boulders were used as props in the Jack Reacher movie staring Tom Cruise. The final action scene of the movie was filmed in the quarry that belongs to the owner of this magnificent old truck.

Thanks to David for helping fill in the gaps. Tomorrow the rest of my show photos (and some of yours) will be up along with some video. Until then here is teaser clip of a very sharp Diamond Reo.

2014 ATCA National Meet

Can you believe the ATCA national meet at Macungie has come and gone? The promise of this weekend was a bright sliver of warmth that I held onto during the course of one long a$@ winter. Sad as it may seem there is no need need to mourn as we can relive the day again and again in our minds and through photos…and of course video! As usual the turnout was massive with Mack trucks being the dominate nameplate. I’ve decided to kick things off by just show casing the Macks that caught my eye. Like I said, there were more than enough to go around with Superliners seeming to be the flavor of the year. Browsing through my photos I kept seeing trucks in the background that I missed entirely. That’s how many rigs were on hand. You can walk by a spectacular unit and not even realize what you did until it was too late. Thankfully this show is well attended so there a variety of other sources to help fill in the blanks.

George Tackaberry brought a Mack Superliner that in my opinion blew the doors off any other Superliner there. I tried to capture its greatness in photo form but I just couldn’t do it. That’s how awesome it was. I reminded me very much of a Mack you would see pulling road trains in Australia. Dual air cleaners win the day.

This 1970 Mack R-Model was one of my favorite survivor trucks of the show although the 1955 LJSW dump truck (see gallery) comes really close along with the truck at the top of the post.

The infamous Macungie mud made a return this year with trucks slipping, sliding and sinking through the show field. Come back tomorrow and throughout the week for continuing coverage of trucks arriving, leaving and mud fighting.

Insperational Diamond T

Some works of art are inspired by religion. Others by women. Still others by trucks. This is one of those stories. Hayes stumbled upon this old Diamond T in a field between Kenosha and Racine Wisconsin years ago. He liked the truck so much he started an oil painting of the subject. For one reason or another the painting was never finished and the truck disappeared.

Old-Truck

Even in an unfinished state the painting looks good to me. This is the type of stuff we should see in museums and art galleries.

Look for more cool stuff from Hayes in the future!

Street Scenes

A collection of random shots today that relate to a variety of the road projects taking place around town. Up first is a nice looking Western Star that had just delivered a set of jersey barriers (or K-rail) to protect workers from crazy morning commuters. A Komatsu PC138USLC was used to unload the truck. The rear of the machine left the ground a few times.

Further up the street a Robinson & Vitale Concrete truck was helping to wrap up working on a similar job by pouring concrete around utility vaults.

Seen in the gallery below are two Peterbilts working on the Connective Corridor project and a Riccelli Enterprises truck with pup trailer cruising the highway.

Rest Stop Photo Op

While travelling the Thruway last week I came across this scene around mid morning. Unfortunately all the action was taking place at a rest stop on the opposite side of the direction I was heading. Cursing my bad luck I moved onto to my destination. A little more than three hours later I was heading back home and finally on the right side of the Thruway for action. I figured it all had to be wrapped up by now but I stopped anyway and was surprised to see that all the trucks and equipment I wanted to photograph were still in place. I guess you can’t rush quality.

NYSTA Mack Granite Lowboy

It looks like a backup generator was being installed for some sort of machine room or pump house that services the rest stop. Can’t have the toilets backing up.

Striking Gold in the Silver State

This past weekend Ryan attended the ATHS Sierra Nevada Chapter annual truck show in Sparks, NV. More than a few beautiful trucks were in attendance with that distinct west coast vibe of the long hood and wheel base. You can never go wrong with a restored truck but there is something about survivor trucks with rust and dents that just feels right.

Make sure you check out the full set of photos over at Ryan’s flicker account. The photos look much better in full resolution that this website can supply. Click here. You’ll be happy you did.

They Have The Power

Last weekend was the Taste of Syracuse which happens to be a very large food festival in downtown Syracuse. A few days prior to the event the setup of tents, porta potties, fencing and generators began in full force. During the crush of activity I spotted a convoy of Big Red Towing trucks hauling in portable gen sets.

Sharp looking units as always. Also on location was this Nations Rent rollback that parked in a scenic location for a photo.

No time was wasted in unloading this truck. It was empty and back on the streets within five minutes.

Autocar Mondays – 100 Years of Autocar

They year of 1997 marked 100 years of Autocar Trucks. By that point in history the brand had fallen into the hands of Volvo and was largely a Volvo truck with an Autocar logo slapped on the side of the hood. This rig wears a 100 year badge and from what I can tell that is the only defining mark of the truck. Clarence found this one at a farm auction a few months back.

Shortly after his encounter with a 100 year truck I found a similar one at the Palmyra Municipal Vehicle auction early last month. I poured over the truck looking for anything significant that would point to more celebration of a century of vehicle building than a piece of plastic but found nothing.

Oh well. Three years later Volvo would “withdrawn” the Autocar name from the market to appease regulators and shareholders after the purchase of Mack Trucks.
