So Long SPEED

You may have heard by now that come August 1st the network known as SPEED will cease to exist. In its place will be a network named Fox Sports 1. This new station is supposed to compete with the likes of ESPN and cover a wider variety of sports related programming. No one is sure what will happen to the current SPEED programming but lets be real, most shows will find the ax. Will there be a home for Gearz on the FS1? Has it already been cancelled? I don’t know but that won’t stop from enjoying the latest installment of project Heavy Metal.

In this episode we learn what will go on the back of the heavy modified Loadstar. I won’t ruin the surprise but I thought it was pretty cool and very original. Check it out below. The new action begins at the 2:30 mark.

The Mack Truck Family

I like to think of this photo as family portrait featuring Mack Trucks. What appears to be a Granite wearing military colors and a Superliner setup to haul logs were captured by Dan at a local CAT dealer. Click the photo to enlage.

Thanks Dan!

Lost and Found – Federal and Kenworth

Last weekend as I traveled south on I-81 through Binghamton I noticed a large green tow truck poking through the tree line. Having passed this location many times in the past I was surprised that I never took notice of such a unique looking rig until now. Considering that I was traveling at 65 m.p.h. I didn’t have much time to figure out the make or model. I made a mental note of the location for a possible return trip that was quickly forgotten. As fate would have it I received an email today from Andy with shots of the very truck I saw. Talk about a small world!

Andy happened upon the trucks the same way I did when travelling down 81. Not content to wait for a possible return visit he stopped and spoke with the current owner of these classics. The truck below is Federal which makes it a very rare find. Soaking in the details of this truck reveals all sorts of vintage levers, lights and other unknown mechanical bits.

Leaping forward a few decades we have the next generation of tow technology represented by this Kenworth. The back story on this truck is a little more detailed than that of the Federal. Apparently the owner of the Kenworth was shot and killed during a robbery but not before he dealt a fatal blow to his assailant. Yikes.

Some of the details of this truck include the slogans “No hill to steep, No ditch to deep” and the classic “23 1/2 Hr Service.” The wrecker body looks to be a Winter-Weiss which is a new one for me.

According to Andy the Federal is for sale while the Kenworth is awaiting a restoration project.

On the Job – Oswego DPW Paystar

Did you know that Oswego, NY is the namesake to communities in Montana, Oregon, Kansas and Illinois? I’m willing to be that none of them experience the same snowfall rate as their namesake.

The Collector

International Trucks puts together a nice little publication called Trail Magazine. Every couple of months a new edition rolls around in either print or electronic format. Trail Magazine includes coverage of the most recent advancements to the International product line while paying homage to their own long established truck building history. Case in point, their recent coverage of the George Tackaberry Collection.

If you have ever been to an ATHS or ATCA truck show in the Northeast I guarantee you have seen a Tackabery truck. George and his family usually bring more than one from his world class collection. Check out the video below and prepare to be amazed. There is something for everyone.

Make sure to stop by the Trail Magazine section of the International Trucks website to see more. Click here now!

W 42nd Street NYC

This weekend I took a trip with my wife to NYC. While trying to avoid the numerous Elmos, Spidermans, and Dora the Explorers begging for money I was able to spy a few cool trucks. The first was a beautiful Mack Granite wearing the colors of Empire Transit Mix. You won’t see any pictures of that rig because I spent too much time gawking before I realized it would make a good photo. I was haunted all weekend by my failure. Thankfully I was able to bounce back and grabbed a shot of this sharp looking Autocar ACL of North Shore Neon Sign. Check out their website for great shots.

Not too far behind the Autocar was this International WorkStar VAC truck of AARCO Environmental Services. Following Hurricane Sandy trucks like this one were all over the city pumping out flooded underground utilities and garages.

Someday I will have to return to NYC for the sole purpose of truck spotting!

Town of Harford – Western Star 4700SF

Have we been here before? Looks like Western Star is making serious inroads into the local  snow plow market especially with the 4700SF platform. Just like the Town of Cuyler truck from last week this 4700 is powered by a DD13 and sports an automatic chain system. Unlike the Cuyler truck the Town of Harford went with a Henderson plow and dump body.

Loadstar Hotrod

If you watch the SPEED show Gearz this might be old news for you but for all others check out the videos below. Personally, I haven’t watched the show in years but please don’t take that as a slight against the program, it’s great. I really enjoy the work and ideas that Stacey David (the host) produces. Hot rods, pickups, big rigs, guitars, he does it all. But what really matters (to me at least) is his continuing work on an International Loadstar. Previous work on this truck has included pulling it from a junkyard, restoring the original gas engine and then eventually installing a tweaked Duramax diesel. The time has now come for Stacey to work on the wheels, suspension and exhaust system.

If you need to catch up on the past videos you can do so by clicking here.

Oshkosh Organ Donor

Fulton, NY sees A LOT of snow over the course of the average winter. This old rig probably more than earned its keep over the years of its active use. While this Oshkosh no longer plows it lives on through the trucks who claimed a few more miles of use through mechanical organ donation.
