A Candle in the Wind

I went to an auction yesterday that had a few cool items but one of the more unique pieces was not for sale. Off in the corner of the property were the remains of a wind turbine. Now I can’t be 100% sure but I believe this unit is from the Fenner Wind Farm located outside of Canastota, NY. Last October one of the windmills caught fire during the middle of the night. Considering the remote location and height of the tower the local volunteer fire departments opted to let the unit burn itself out. What a sight that must have been on a dark Friday night! Below you can see the aftermath of the unexplained fire.

Wind Turbine Nacle

On the JPW Riggers back lot the burned shell of the nacelle rests along with the three rotor blades and the hub piece to which they once attached. Most likely these pieces can never be used again for fear of future failures or other faults. Probably a good idea.

Wind Turbine Blade

Fun fact. A few years prior to this fire one of the towers partially collapsed. Putting these giants together is more than a huge feat. I can only imagine how difficult of an undertaking it must be when trying to deconstruct one that has partially burned or collapsed. Remember that windmill from a few years ago under construction at the Maple Ridge Wind Farm? A Manitowac with a 295 foot boom barely is large enough. Click here to look back.

I made a short video of the remains.

On Tuesday we’ll take a closer look at one of the true auction items. It’s a good one!

Just About Time

If you have ever traveled through Pennsylvania and did not encounter a portion of Interstate under construction chances are you were flying. Maybe in a plane. Maybe on the back of giant of flamingo. Who knows. Either way you missed all the fun. Motoring on down to Virginia a few months ago I encountered plenty of single lane roads with PennDOT crews performing crack sealing. As my wife was doing the driving I was able to shoot out the window. Am I the only one who looks forward to work zones?

PennDot Snow Plow

Back to my home turf this well appointed Mack Granite for the Town of Verona was taking up a parking spot at Beam Mack.

Mack Granite Snow Plow

Man oh man do I love the vintage yet still working truck fleet that is the Syracuse DPW. Every year the special use trucks emerge from the barn and head to local shops for the specialty work to get them ready for plowing. To the best of my knowledge these trucks don’t see any action outside of winter. Look at this beauty! Sister truck 212 was a real star last winter. Click here to see.

No, you’re not seeing double. These two Sterlings for the Town of Clay just happened to show up at the dealer on the same day.

STerling Snow Plows

In the mixed gallery below we have 4×4 rig for the Town of Camillus, a well maintained rig for the City of Sherrill, NY, a pair of WorkStars for the Oneida County Highway Department, Thruway WorkStar, Stockbridge Western Star, more Thruway, more Sherrill.

Log Hauling

Nothing too complex today, just an older Western Star hauling a load of logs for Rick Turk tree service.

Rough Terrain Reach Stacker

Here is another great edition to the extreme zoom file, a U.S. military RTCH or Rough Terran Reach Stacker. I happened to spot two of these machines on Department of Defense railcars last weekend. Considering they were out in the open I figured it was safe to take a photo. It doesn’t appear that shipping container cranes are top secret pieces of Uncle Sam’s arsenal. If this is my last post ever you’ll know the stealth helicopters came and took me away in the middle of the night.

Rough Terrain Reach Stacker

Anway, this particular model is the RT240 which has been designed to operate in virtually any terrain including water up to five feet deep. Maximum lifting capacity on this crane is 65,000 pounds which is basically one of the shipping containers seen in the background. The RT240 allows military forces to move supplies through undeveloped or war torn areas with speed and efficiency. An army does march on it’s stomach after all.

Swing by the Kalmar website dedicated to the RT240 for more great photos and backstory.

Cat 235 Excavator

Recently there has been some activity on commercial lot that I pass by at least four times a week. Usually I don’t have time to stop for photos or work has ended for the day. I little part of me died each time this happened. Such awesome equipment within eye shot and I could do nothing. Pure torture. Thanks to El Nino, or global warming, or both the weather this November has been warm. Taking advantage of this lucky break crews from J.K. Tobin were out on a Saturday moving and digging dirt.

The machine that caught my eye since the first day it showed up was this Cat 235 excavator. Not too bad looking for a 20+ year old machine right? I would say factory fresh in each and every way.

I took some photos and videos as the 235 loaded up trucks with topsoil while a 330C wrestled with the remains of some rather large trees. For peeping through the windshield of my car I think they turned out OK.

It feels good to have this monkey off my back.

Autocar Mondays – Blast From the Past

Today we return to 2007 and the ATHS Twin Tiers chapter truck show for a pristine example of Autocar beauty. This 1971 model looks ready to hit the streets with the best of them. Powered by a Cummins 350 turbo charged diesel you’ll have a chance to row through 13 gears while cruising the open road. With a long 225 inch wheel base and 38,000 lbs rears this truck is ready to hitch up to a dump trailer and roll.

Autocar DC

I wonder where this truck is now? In all the truck shows I’ve attended since 2007 I don’t ever recall seeing it after this date.

Have you spotted an Autocar? Let the world see! Email eric@dailydieseldose.com today!

Operating Speed

Well, the site is just about back up to full operating speed. I’ve recreated the lost posts so make sure you go back and check them out if you missed the originals. They are basically new entries as I had to start from scratch on them. The posts have been back dated so scroll on down to see what you might have missed. If you were current on your reading take a moment to visit the B-Roll by clicking on the link toward the top of the page. Many new photos have been added over the past couple of weeks that you might enjoy.

I’ve always though the color of Dunbar Armored looked alot like the Guard Dog Armored Transport trucks from the movie Armed and Dangerous.

Glitch in the Matrix

Yesterday morning I logged on to the site, made a post, saved it, and then went about my business. I didn’t check back on things until twelve hours later and to my surprise not only was the current post not published but that past three days of material were gone as well. They don’t exist. I’m not sure what happened but all that information is gone like yesterdays wind. I even checked the database tables and there is nothing. I suspect something went wrong with my host provider and then went back to their most recent backup. I guess it’s cool that didn’t bother to tell me sooooo, yeah. I have to check on a few things, backup a few things, recreate a few things and then the show will continue. Until then enjoy these tow truck photos.

Reduse. Reuse. Recycle

In the John Deere world they don’t come much bigger than this 450D. This particular Cervidae named excavator was seen at the site of a new building for FedEx that is taking place shape in the former parking lot of the New Process Gear factory. For over 125 years NPG was a manufacturing titan of Syracuse. If you have a Jeep or Dodge truck in your driveway that is 2012 or older you probably have a new NPG transmission or transfer case in your vehicle. Like much of the auto industry the factory suffered tremendously during the economic implosion of 2008 and beyond. Now the plant sits stripped of it’s machinery and is largely unused except for a few acres devoted to the dry storage of milk products.

Deere Excavator

The fact that FedEx is constructing a building in the parking lot of this former factory should give you an idea of the size and the impact this business once had on the entire region.

Instead of pickups and jeeps the lot now is home to dozers like this one.

Ran When Parked

Ran when parked. If you’ve ever browsed the auto section of Craigslist you’ve seen this infamous tag line. This phrase is supposed to evoke a feeling of peace after you just looked at a series of photos depicting an item that has sat exposed to the elements for the past decade or more. Surely if it got to the middle of the field ten years ago under its own power it can do it again! Just write the check and it’s yours.

These Case tractors from the Empire Farm show auction look as they just came straight from the back pages of CL. Missing parts. Missing wheels. But if you’re a Case man how could you pass up this dynamic trio. Most likely they call came from the same fallow field. What a crop.

On the heavier side of things we have this Cat D6 dozer. This machine hails from a period of time when iron was plentiful. The thicker, the better. Running status of this Cat is unknown.
