Autocar Mondays – T is for Turbo

Can it get more Autocar than this? Clarence spotted this prime example of A-Car iron at an auction this past weekend in Lowell, Massachusetts. The New England states have always been a hotbed for Autocars and it’s comforting to see that a few gems still exist.

The exact age on this truck is unknown but under the hood this rig is packing a 743 cubic inch turbo charged Cummins NH 220. Loaded or unloaded this truck is going to make its presence known while thundering down the road. Next to the massive steering wheel in the cab you’ll find two sticks for the 5+4 transmission. Back to that steering wheel, your arms will be working out double time to move those six spoke wheels sporting 24″ rubber. Rockwell suspension and rears are just waiting for the heaviest of loads. Go ahead and bring it on. This truck can take it.

Autocar Dump Truck

From the outside this truck has one glaring flaw in the form of a busted drivers side windshield. Beyond that not much is known but Autocars are tough beasts so I’m sure what’s broke can be fixed. Put this truck back on the road.

Awesome find! Thanks for Clarence for sharing!

Still Working – The Falter Mack Superliner

I had to crank out the zoom for this one but it was worth it. A Mack Superliner of Falter Construction. Obviously this truck is still working and working very hard based on the load of steel strapped to its trailer. Sharp minded readers might recall I tried to grab a shot of this rig back in the August of 2013 but was blocked by razor wire. Instead I was able to get a clean shot of a heavy spec R-Model. From what I could see that truck is now gone. Maybe to a job site as a site truck as it did seem a little rough around the edges. Or maybe it’s on a slow boat to Guatemala. Click here to reminisce.

A Real Dump Truck

A received an email from Mark yesterday evening containing photos of, as he put it,  a real dump truck. Looking at this 1996 Kenworth C510 I have to agree. It doesn’t get much realer than this! According to the driver the truck was purchased from the Long Island area. With the current Fruehauf dump body, (original to the truck) set back axle, and pusher axle this truck can carry much, much more than currently allowed by NYS weight regulations.

This truck means business! Load it up and leave ruts in the pavement. Thanks for turning around to grab some photos of this truck and sharing them with the rest of us Mark.

At the Dealer Fall 2015

A new green Freightliner with a Trout River live bottom dump trailer. All the clues point to a new truck for road paving superstar Suit-Kote. I spied this truck back in the fading summer sun of early September. If it was delivered shortly after this photo it probably had a chance to hit a construction job or two before laying up for the winter.

Freightliner 122SD

Across town at Milton Cat a growing fleet of Cat CT660’s were on hand. That grey truck on the end has been on the lot for awhile now. Maybe it’s time to make an offer?

FWD Trucks

When it comes to snowplows they sure don’t make them like they used to! Case in point, this massive FWD for the Town of Dover, NY recently photographed by Tom. Believe it or not this truck used to be bigger. It started plowing for the Dutchess County Airport as a tandem axle but was eventually cut down to a single for better maneuverability on residential streets. Power for snow pushing comes from a Detroit Diesel 8V-92T paired to an Allison Automatic. Who wouldn’t love hearing this beast scream away while blasting through snow drifts?

FWD Snowplow

While must of us would be happy seeing this fine machine Tom was actually able to find two more FWDs!

FWD Snowplow Truck

This beautiful couple can still be found in active used by the Town of Haverstraw, NY. Bother are powered by Detroit 6V-71N engines with the older truck sporting a five speed manual with 2 speed rear end while the other truck utilizes an Allison Automatic.

Thanks for sharing Tom! It seems like downstate NY is still full of FWD trucks.

Rotary Dump Truck

While passing by Tartaglia Railroad Services one day I noticed this bright green dump truck. Honestly, how could I have missed it? This particular truck is setup to ride the rails and has a dump body that can rotate for the easy placing ballast and other such material.

And then there is this thing. It was doing something the day I saw it. A thing that does something. Descriptive no doubt. If I had to take a guess I would tag it as a ballast regulator. It all comes down to ballast when you’re riding the rails.

MOW Vehicle

Take a moment to swing by the Tartaglia website to see shots of an old caboose currently used a conference room. Very neat.

Tune In. Drop Out.

I’m starting to dig through some of the videos from the ATHS national show and a other events that have yet to see the light of day. Today we’ll start with a pair of Macks in the form of a 1964 B-81 and 1949 Mack LJT. Great looking. Great sounding. Brilliantly restored.

From the ATCA Endless Mountains chapter truck show in Harford, PA comes a Brockway 761 that you can’t help but notice and have no choice but to hear.

Let me know if you see any duplicates from past videos!

Autocar Mondays – ACL Three Pack

Get your zoom on. Onondaga County DOT still runs this butterfly hood (steel?) Autocar ACL64 for pulling a Etnyre gooseneck trailer. During the summer months this truck spent plenty of time at the North Area Maintenance garage when road constructions projects were in full high gear.

Autocar ACL

Riccelli Enterprises has an ACL as well. I spotted this one at a local spring shop after the dump bed took a beating by some unknown force.

And finally, here is a truck I first saw allllllll the way back in April of 2014. I kept telling myself I would use it for ACM but for one reason or another it was regularly bumped in favor of some other truck. Not this time! Enjoy your 15 seconds of fame.

Hoppenville Antique Truck, Tractor and Car Show

Some very nice photos today of a truck show that took place last weekend at the home of John B. Haines IV in Hoppenville, PA.  Dave paid a visit later in the day and while some trucks had already left more than enough classic iron was on hand for spectating purposes.

B-Model Mack

Between the Haines Collection and the trucks that made the trip it’s hard to pick a favorite. Thanks for sharing Dave. Great job!

Forgotten Photos

Round round get around I get around. Those lyrics sum up this past summer and fall for me with travel to the ATHS national show, a inlaw visit to the NY/NJ area, a visit to Richmond, VA, various trucks shows through out NY and PA area and finally another trip back down to Reston, VA. To visit all these fantastic locations I left my humble home via Interstate I-81. Sometimes the driving involved can be absolute drudgery especially when you’re not to excited about the destination but their is a silver lining to every cloud in the form of truck spotting. Now I can tell you this. I passed more cool trucks and construction sites than I took photos of but that is okay because using a camera while driving is not cool. Just ask McGruff the crime dog. I would have liked to show you the line of Mack and Autocar dump trucks working on bridge reconstruction outside of Wilks-Barre, PA. Or the complete demotion and reconstruction of I-81 somewhere south of…somewhere. I really don’t know where it was taking place but it’s in Pennsylvania. Construction season never ends in Pennsylvania. And what about a White Road Boss dump truck loaded to the brim screaming up one of those mountain cuts outside of Scranton? Like I said, I missed more than I caught but on a few occasion I did find myself in the passenger seat and in the right frame of mind to snap a photo or two.

Back in July I passed this Terex crane while winding through the hills outside of Cortland, NY. It wasn’t until months later when I looked back at the photo that I realized it was a Moultons Towing rig, a company often seen on this site.

Moultons Towing

A little further south it was time to stop for a break. This driver from A-Verdi had the same idea.

Kenworth Semi Truck

Somewhere outside of Harrisburg I passed this Kenworth T-880 pulling a Moxy haul truck.

Heavy Haul Truck

Coming back home through PA coal country, that stretch of 81 that I level with the sky, I passed this silo heading south. I’m sure someone out there can place this location based on the partial company name on the truck and that MMGCO water tower.

Heavy Haul Truck

I encountered this truck shortly after getting back on I-81 after an unscheduled scenic detour through PA Stage game lands 211 when my GPS felt the need to find a quicker route. I don’t think it was quicker but it was a beautiful fall day so the stress level didn’t rise that quickly. I did pass by this Sub Mack on the outskirts of Harrisburg. I wonder if franchises are available?
