So you like Mack Trucks?

Mack is back! Did they ever leave? Maybe. Or maybe not. A question with no answer? Or an answer to a question no one asked? Clarence sent me shots of a future fleet in the making for a destination unknown. At least twenty new Mack Granites with setback axles and catch basin cleaners. They all appear to be setup the same which leads me to believe they are heading to the same location. DSNY in the NYC perhaps?

Tom also shares with us some detailed shots of a 2013 Mack Granite for the State of Rhode Island DOT. Power comes from a Mack 350 HP engine connected to an Allison automatic. This truck wears 11 foot Viking plows with a Swenson spreader to distribute those car rotting juices.

It’s nice to see setups from around the country. Keeps things fresh you know?

Thanks for sharing Tom!

*Update*

After an update from MJ and a discussion at the DOT Snow Plows Truck group it has been determined that Macks are indeed heading to NYC.

Autocar Mondays – Tanker Duty

We now return to sunny California for yet another great find by Ryan in the form of this Autocar tanker. Based on the rounded grill and the hood ornament I’m going to peg this truck squarely in the middle of the fabulous 50’s. Possibly a 53 to 56? This would be one of the first Autocars to support the world famous and long lived “Drivers Cab”, an all metal cab, a first for the company. Perhaps this is a model DC-10064? If you know better please let me know.

Autocar Tanker Truck

I have to say this truck looks pretty good for its age. Keep ’em coming Ryan!

Curb Service

Coming back from the Empire Farm Show months ago I passed the home base of Geneva Granite. Seeing the trucks lined up out front my dad asked me if we should stop for photos. I told him it wasn’t necessary as I’ve seen them all over the past summer. Now it’s your turn! Below is the Geneva Granite collection curated by me over the past spring and summer. We’ve seen their trucks before (and even more before) on Daily Diesel Dose by why not again?

Old GMC Logging Truck

Ryan shared this photo with me way back in June and now I’m sharing it with you. Apologies for the significant delay.

IMG_0647 (1024x683)

This rig is simply too cool for school and is probably of the late 40’s variety, most likey some for of “A” model. Take that tin can off the exhaust stack and you are ready to go. The stories this truck could tell.

Your Trucks – GMC General

I believe I have the flu or something along those lines so I’m going to have to gut this one out while keeping it simple. Yesterday I received some nice looking photos of a Five Star GMC General which is all original except for the paint. I’m going to go out a rather sturdy and large limb and say the engine is of the Detroit Diesel variety.

GMC General

Front Range Asphalt Maintenance is the proud owner of this great truck. It pulls a Lee Boy paver, roller and Bobcat each and every day.

The New Normal

This is the new normal in downtown now. Giant cold planers driving through the streets like cars. I walked along side this machine for nearly a mile as it traveled through the heart of the city with hardly a person taking notice. People stopped at lights along side it could have cared less even when the boom hanging over their car. I guess at this point in the year road construction has become so common place people tune it out. Or maybe it had something to do with the man wearing a studded leather jacket screaming at the top of his lungs regarding the folly that is buying pet rocks when you can just pick one up off the ground for free. Always something to see and do in the ‘Cuse!

Cat Cold Planer

Somehow this machine milled a dozen intersections in the area without me noticing. After spying its lowboy two days ago (see gallery below) I half heatedly wandered the streets looking for it. It’s harder to find a giant steel box on tracks than I thought.

Staying on the topic of road work I always like it when a new face like this International Paystar5000 shows up. I’m pegging this truck as a mid 80’s model based on the I.H. logo appearing above the door handles. It’s just loud enough with a hint turbo whistle to set it apart from the fleet of Mack Granites who perform the majority of the hauling work.

International Paystar

Another private contractor on hand, and a truck we’ve seen before, is this clean Volvo from Autocar Trucking. It was a tad cold when the paving was taking place. This shot doesn’t show it too well but the steam and the lights in the early morning produced a cool look.

Volvo Dump Truck

In the gallery below are a few more construction randoms. The old sidewalks, curbs and streets continue to fall one by one. I may be imagining this but the newly poured sidewalks seem to be softer, almost bouncy beneath my feet. Maybe they haven’t fully cured or I’ve just been breathing in too many asphalt fumes.

October Snow Plow Update

The time is quickly approaching when monthly updates of snow plows and other plowing related activities will no longer be needed. We all know why. I’ve heard that the first snows have already fallen in the Rockies. Find your hat and mittens, it’s supposed to be a rough winter. Below are some of the trucks that will be battling it out on the front lines and a few that have retired.

I’ll start off with some Onondaga County DOT trucks that were recently sold at auction. I don’t live far from the main collection area for surplus equipment so I swung by the yard when I noticed a collection of 2674’s up for sale. Two of the trucks are of the 1996 vintage while one is a 1999. The county seal and numbers have been expertly removed so I’ve been scouring the photos to determine if the 99 model is Truck 57. Comparing the photos I don’t believe old number 57 has been sold…yet. As Joe informed us last year the county purchased 8, 2674s in 1999. Now there are only seven. All three trucks were sold for around $9,850 dollars to the same buyer. The truck below is 96 with a Cummins M11 Plus, Eaton Fuller 8LL, and 95,720 hard fought miles.

We’ve seen plenty of these Western Star 4800 AWD models in past updates but here is another one. This model seems to be the new default truck of choice when specing out a heavy duty plow rig. This one happens to heading to the Town of Otisco, NY

Speaking of Otisco they recently sold their 2003 International PayStar for a princely sum of $45,100. Out with the old. In with the new.

And here is an even older Paystar, also from Otisco, now in the employ of the Town of Camillus, NY. It seems a little odd that a large department like Camillus would grab a second hand rig from a smaller town but a deal is a deal.

In the gallery below you will find a brand new Mack heading for the Town of West Bumblestumble. No, that isn’t the actual name but I forgot the original so this will have to do. Another Mack from the Town of Verona. A NYSDOT tadem International 7600 with water tank. A International 7600 for the NYSTA awaiting its refurbished dump body. A new Western Star 4700 also for the NYSTA setup as a lowboy hauler. A Mack RD from an unknown municipality. A pristine International 2674 from the Town of Westmoreland. A well used International Paystar from the City of Syracuse and finally a 2674 from the Town of Conquest.

Autocar Mondays – The Last Refuge

New York City and the surrounding metro area are the last know parts of the country in which Autocars still roam free in large numbers. Once enjoying a habitat range that spanned the majority of the continental United States, the Autocar is now endangered due to the wasting disease known as Volvo along with the introduction of calcium chloride to many road surfaces. Thanks largely to the dedicated stewardship of numerous trucking companies Autocars of many varieties and ages still flourish in what can now be considered the national Autocar sanctuary of the United States.

Goodbye Maxxforce

The writing has been on the wall for a while now but now it’s become official without being officially announced, the Maxxforce lines of engines produced by International are a failure. At least the larger bore models for class 8 semis. The debacle with Maxxforce EGR engines has costed the company millions while decreasing market share. Thanks to the wise decision to dump EGR and partner with Cummins, International has managed to claw it’s way back to profitably through plant closures and other divestitures. But yet the pain still lingers. Maxxforce engines were supposed to free International from the hassles of dealing with outside suppliers. Building engines in house make sense as the profits stay in house. If you make your own engines you are not at the mercy of an outside vendor who can idle your production lines when they experience problems of their own. This integrated production should allow you to move trucks out the door at a quick pace. With industry backlog at record highs this could lead to an increase in market share. After all, your competitors cant sell a truck they don’t have. Unfortunately for International this wasn’t the case. Warranty costs relating to Maxxforce EGR spiraled while reliability plummeted. Class action lawsuits are now starting. In the trucking word people rarely forget or forgive trucks that don’t perform. Once you lose a customer you have to work very hard to get them back. So what do you do? Time for a rebranding.

I’ve noticed recently on the International website, the Trail Magazine, and the International Youtube channel news regarding the N9 and N10 line of engines. These two “new” engines appear to have replaced all the Maxxforce engines except for the DT and 7 creations. Are they really new? No, they are not. Based on the video below I think they are the same Maxxforce engines as before but this time using SCR from the factory. The International rep in the video alludes to past glories of class leading engines and the need to regain that title while mentioning the N series line are the best of both worlds as they use EGR hardened materials that can only lead to increase life in less demanding SCR situations. We shall see. Unlike when Maxxforce arrived on the scene the N’s arrived with no trumpets blaring. No banners unfurling. No outrages promises have been made. The engines have quietly arrived on the scene hopefully ready to work.

As an unabashed International supporter I hope they can pull this off. I would probably feel different if I was one of the people stuck with a Maxxforce lump but I wasn’t so I’m willing to forgive and forget. Below is a video of engine manufacturing relating to the new N9 and N10.

Personally, I’m happy to see the Maxxforce name leave us. It reminded me to much of the time Homer Simpson changed his name to Max Power, a name he mooched from a hair dryer of all places.
