The Local Scrap Yard

After the highway expo earlier this week I decided to cruise by a local scrap yard conveniently located right next to fairgrounds. All the usual junk yard actives were taking place and thanks to a gently rising hill complete with sidewalk I was able to observe the daily routine that is precious metal recycling.

Syracuse Scrap Yard

Plenty of Sennebogen machines at this location with giant magnets. One was working in a muddy patch of land grabbing the final bits of iron out of a recently closed section of yard. The other was being serviced. A pair of well used Kobelco excavators were busy making large chunks of steel into tiny chunks of steel. A Kawasaki loader shuttled freshly arrived cars from a device I call the dejuicer to the dismemberment pile. From what I can tell the dejuicer is completely remote controlled by the loader operator. Drills puncture the car at various locations to remove vital yet toxic fluids. I was just about ready to leave when I noticed this make shift storage hopper.

Scrap Metal

Yeaaaaaaahhhh, that’s a Cat 775D dump body, capacity 57 yards. I think there is a little more room near the front.

LORAM Rail Grinder RG-318

Tuesday as I was coming home from work I noticed this long line of strange looking rail cars. I though about stopping for a look but I went home instead. The rest of the day I had visions of that time Mr. T came to the mall. That entire day I kept saying I’ll go a little later, I’ll go a little later…’ but when I finally got there, they told me he just left. When I asked the mall guy if he would ever come back again, he said he didn’t know. I was able to breath a huge sigh of relief when I returned the following day and found the train still parked in the same spot with numerous diesel engines happily idling away. I’m fairly sure I heard some of the two stroke variety among the clatter.

Loram RG-318

So what does this train do? As the title of this post suggests it grinds the surface of rails to remove imperfections that reduce rail car wheel life. Grinding also provides a host of other benefits as explained by the offical LORAM website. You can even find more photos of RG-318 on their site.

Loram RG-318

As you can imagine a train full of grinding wheels has the ability to produce a large number of sparks. Heading over to Youtube you can watch this very train cruise the tracks at night shooting sparks and causing small brush fires along the right of way. Thankfully this train comes equipped with its own fire hose to quickly dose the hot spots. Below is a video of similar grinder in action. I can almost feel those sparks!

NYS Highway and Public Works Expo

Thanks to some gentle prodding (and free tickets) from Tom I finally checked out the New York State Highway and Public Works Expo at the NYS Fairgrounds. Rhetorical question. Why have I waited so long? Going to the show sure beats a day at the office. If someone makes a product that can be used to plow snow, lay asphalt, suck leaves or push dirt you will find it at the expo. As an added bonus there were plenty of swag and freebies. But I didn’t go for some free pens and coffee mugs. I went to see setups like this like insane Western Star 4700 with twin pusher axles.

Western Star 4700 Snow Plow

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a plow truck in NYS with a setup like this one. The blade of choice for this truck is a Henderson SnowFoe Expressway, designed for high speed highway operation. The word “Maryland” was scrawled on various parts of the truck. My friend Google tells me there is a Maryland, NY in Otsego County. I’m going to guess that is the future home of this truck instead of..you know…Maryland the state.

Cat CT681

Also at the show was a truck from my bucket list, the new Cat CT681. Did you ever stop and think about what the CT stands for? I have a suspicion that it stands for nothing more than Cat Truck. Someone prove me wrong!

Considering the monthly rationing of snow plow photos at an end. Between this show, your submissions and what has been showing up on the dealer lots there will be plenty more where these came from.

Still Working – GMC General Cement Truck

Look! It’s another GMC General for Cortland Ready-Mix! We saw one of these a few months ago when The Saunders Companies did some house cleaning. As I often do when driving my eyes are constantly scanning the surrounding area for cool trucks. I happened to spy this one from 1-81 while doing 65 MPH. Eagle Eyes is my new call sign.

GMC General Cement Truck

As a happy bonus it was parked next to a nice looking Mack DM.

Cortland Ready Mix

Now a question for the GMC experts. Was there  a difference between the GMC Generals like this one and the models that wore the 5 star emblem? After watching Highway Thru Hell last season the narrator kept referring to the old General of the fleet as “The Five Star” General. I thought perhaps this was an attempt at being clever but now I wondering if the stars really mean something.

Still Working – International S2500

It’s good to see local towns holding on to old trucks when they still have some life left in them. I’m sure there is a some kind of state grant or matching money that would allow Madrid, NY to grab a new Mack or Western Star with a 400+ HP engine, 18 speed transmission, air suspension, and aluminium rims but they have ignored the temptation. Newer is not always better.

International S2500

The heavy duty part of the S-Series lineup was introduced to the world in 1977 at a special showing in the Super Dome. Originally code named “Tristar” the S-Series was an all new line of trucks for International.¹ It was a product line that would help establish the company as a major player for decades to come. Upon closer inspection of this photo I believe the emblem may read S-2200. If correct, this truck could be a 1984 model, the final year of the 2200. Original engine choices included eleven varieties of Cummins engines or six Detroit Diesel selections. A Spincer 5 speed was the default transmission choice with an Allison 4 speed automatic or a Fuller 10 speed Road Ranger as other options.²

Autocar Mondays – In Good Company

The past few editions of Autocar Mondays have featured trucks still in the prime of the working life. Today we gaze upon three DC-9964s that may have hauled their last loads.

Clarence found this trio residing in a slate quarry which seems to be a rather common hiding place for Autocars in his neck of the woods. Great finds. Love the nobby tires on the truck to the right of the photo. Check out the links below for more of his great finds.

The Daily Diesel Dose Tapes

This “found” footage will not help prove the existence of aliens or tell us who built the pyramids but it will fill your ears with the sounds of diesel. To start we travel back to the first weekend of August and the Empire State Antique Truck Association annual show. Classic tractor pulls are always part of the weekend but before the fun can begin the track must be prepared using only the choicest of machines, the John Deere 4010. I thought this tractor had a nice vintage sound to it.

Thanks to the dysfunction that is the desktop of my laptop this video of Peterbilt 359 climbing the grade the ATCA Northeastern PA show was almost lost forever! This truck would eventually leave the show on the back of wrecker due to a bad injector. Make sure to check out the U.T.R Usherwood Truck Restoration page on facebook for more of this rig and other cool trucks. Click here.

Even events as recent as the ATHS Hudson Mohawk show have footage represented here today. I took a video of this beautiful Autocar on my phone and nearly forgot about it. How would you finish this truck? Maybe a dump body or a roll off setup? Rocket launcher perhaps?

That’s all for today but I can tell you more videos are in the works from the CNY ATHS show and even more from the ATCA Northeastern PA show. Patience is a virtue.

Concrete Shoes

Now this is a well cared for International Paystar. Out back you have not only a hydraulic arm but a heavy duty hoist. The perfect setup for moving any chunk of concrete you may come across. This truck is part of the Northern Group which was recently acquired by Riccelli Enterprises.

And here is a Kenworth bulk hauler also from Northern.

And while on the topic of bulk hauling here are two old rigs spotted by my wife at the Clark Concrete location (Cranesville Block) in Syracuse, NY.

Downtown Plaza Demolition

Ryan is doing a great job keeping tabs on the leveling of Downtown Plaza in the heart of Sacramento, CA. With the demolition phase of the project quickly nearing an end I know you may feel sad and anxious over what will fill the void of such amazing footage. Take heart! All this hard work is being done so construction can begin on a new arena for the Sacramento Kings. You know what that means. More trucks. More construction. More heavy equipment. The new arena is planned to have a retractable roof so I foresee large cranes in the future. I’m sure Ryan will be there to document every moment. 😉

But let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Live for today. Live for the moment.

Ferma Corporation Demolition

Showing how far the job has progressed since the start of the summer we find heavy equipment already leaving the site.

You can read more about the project by clicking here. I could only dream that my local paper would so thorough as to announce constructions project plans right down the minute. Props to the Sacramento Bee.

At the Dealer – Western Star 5700XE

Look what I found sitting at the local Western Star dealer the other day. I was pretty sure it was going to be months before I saw one of these based on the slow appearance of the last new truck on the market, the Cat CT660. Thinking about the situation I now realize the two are completely different rollouts. The Cat is a niche truck with low build numbers while the Western Star 5700XE is expected be a high production, high volume seller highway hauler.

The styling of this truck is already growing on me. It looks pretty good when you think of the other aerodynamic trucks in its class.

Next time I will give Tracey Road Equipment more credit when it comes to having the latest truck models on hand. After all, they are kind of a big deal.
