Palmyra Municipal Auction 2014

Three weeks ago I went to the Palmyra Government Surplus Equipment Auction that gathers a variety of trucks, pickups, and heavy equipment from numerous government entities from around the region and beyond. If you are looking for a late model plow truck this is the auction for you. The offerings this year were not much different from last year when I first attended. Plenty of Ford L series trucks still crossing the block from good condition to rust bucket on wheels. A few former military items like an International Payloader and CCC semi were up for bid with both smelling suspiciously like urine. It must have something to do with the canvas material found in all army vehicles. Yeah, canvas. The payloader had a nifty plaque on the inside to remind the operator what various airport runway signal lights indicated while the CCC was completely rebuilt inside and out. It came with full service and repair manuals in both book and CD form. It would have been a good buy except the engine seemed to have a really nasty nock sound. As we saw Monday there were more than a few Autocars on hand with plenty of ACL models to choose from. I even found the predecessor to the Town of Pompey 2014 Western Star 4800 we’ve been following for months. Check back on Autocar Mondays next week for that one. The Town of Arcadia was back again with another pristine Mack, a 2000 CL713 with an E-7, 8LL trans and just north of 100,000 on the odometer. This CL was on of those trucks that caused people to camp out in the cab and fenders until the bidding started. Territority was marked. If you took more than a casual glance on that rig you would become embroiled in a stare down. You may remember that last year Arcadia sent a like new 1987 RM6884X to the auction. The City of Rochester with their distinctive lime green trucks were represented in the form of two Freightliner Condors and a few GMC 8500 grapple trucks. You start wonder about the state of International Trucks when a two year old WorkStar with less than 20,000 miles shows up for sale. The Town of Stafford had one ready to go. I guess Maxxforce engines really must be junk! Yikes.

Take a moment to browse the gallery below and find your favorite. I’m working on updating the photos with years, stats and previous owners so check back often or leave a comment if you have a burning desire to know more about a particular truck. Video to follow of select vehicles.

Specialized Peterbilt

Take a look at this piece of equipment, it’s a machine designed to do one unique job, the removal of traffic stripes from roadways. That’s it. Nothing else. At least that is my story. I hope it does something else. It sure does have enough fans, filters, lights, wheels, bins and hoses. The arms you see in the middle of the truck are essentially giant grinding wheels that erase the epoxy stripe from the road. Very good at making dust and noise. Straight Line Industries is the proud owner of this rig.

Later in the day I came across another specialized truck from the PACCAR family tree. This truck is either brand new or PCS takes great care of their equipment. The RamVac HX-12 is a vacuum excavator and utilizes either compressed air or liquid to remove soil when searching for or installing new underground utilities. The technique reduces the chance of having a nasty accident like breaking a gas main.

Dump Truck History

You’re looking at a piece of dump trucking history, maybe, at least for the Syracuse area. Now that the disclaimers are out of the way feast your eyes on this steel hood Mack DM.

Not too shaby for a mid 80’s dump truck. Based on the red and black paint scheme I suspect this truck to be part of the former behemoth that wast Santaro Industries. The mud flaps out back that read Santaro were another dead give away.

*Update*

A local expert has confirmed this is not a former Santaro truck. OH Well. Better luck next time.

Autocar Mondays – 1982 Autocar Semi

Can you believe I went to a municipal truck auction over three weeks ago and I am now just posting photos and videos?! Crazy but worth the wait…I hope. Despite reviewing the auction catalog for weeks prior I missed lot 462, a 1982 Autocar semi from the Town of Penfield, NY.

All things considered, this truck was in amazing shape. Even the rusty fenders had more strength to them than the average brand new passenger car door. A Cummins 300 and the trusty Fuller 8LL transmission (air shift) form the familiar blueprint of Autocar specs the world over. The cab was rust free. That’s right, cab corners, door jambs, all clean. Even that spot of above the windshield that always rots out on ACars was fine. The interior was in a good shape too with only minor damage to the dash. The steering wheel, still sporting the old style Autocar logo, was clean and unbroken, all three feet of it. Power steering? Maybe for whimps. How about that windshield cleaner reservoir? DOT would pass it just because it’s so cool. Only 130,000 miles. Here is a video of me drooling over it.

More too come from this auction this week and even more regarding Autocars!

Diggerland USA

First there was Dig This, a heavy equipment playground in Las Vegas for adults yearning to free their inner doozer. Now, a more family orientated park is slated to open soon in West Berlin, NJ by the name of Diggerland USA. Taking a look at the official website of the theme park reveals a host of kid centered attractions from Mini Digger Bowling to Backhoe Adventure. Children are allowed to operate all of the equipment under the supervision of staff with JCB ‘s seeming to be the machine of choice for the park. Check out the park shuttle, it’s a modified telehandler.

I’m not sure what the deal is with the obvious photoshop of the park name on equipment but who cares! This place is a great idea. Check out the Spin Dizzy ride, it’s straight out the imagination of kid.

The targeted opening date is June 14th, 2014 with daily tickets limited to provide equal access to all attractions. Children under 36 inches and adults over 65 are free! Check out the official Diggerland website for full details.

ebay Finds – 1993 White AWD Behemoth

The Cave of Wonders, otherwise known as ebay, has released another jewel for discerning buyers in the form of this 1993 White complete with Marmon Herrington AWD conversion. It may come as no surprise that this truck was housed on an U.S. Air Force base where it was babied and kept indoors as a backup unit to an even larger hauler. According the seller this truck will cruise down the road at 70 MPH just like a Cadillac thanks to a 300HP Cummins engine. Only 12K miles on the odometer with no damage and a smoke free cab. Lack of use is the main reason the owner is looking to sell.

Maybe I should think about grabbing this one. After all, my name is already painted on the side! Nothing left to do but go find something to haul. Hurry, just one day left! Check out the full listing here.

Mack Trucks On The Job

A Mack truck so nice I took its photo twice. This truck has been busy dropping off bricks for various projects around downtown. The loading arm out back is really nothing more than a beam that can extend and swing around. There is not much lift at all. A handy setup in spaces with overhead obstructions. Paragon Supply operates this truck.

Also seen in the gallery below is a DM model from Earth Road Asphalt, a company that is part of the Spano empire. For once I was glad I caught the red light.

Still Working – International 9370 Eagle

This International 9370 is a young truck when looking at some of the other vehicles that make up the Still Working category of this site but age is not only factor to determine how well a truck has survived the years. While this truck may not be 20 years old I’m sure it has more than a few hundred thousand miles on the odometer. Many, many more miles than a dump truck that only works during the summer months or some other rig with a specialty attachments. Working for a living is the motto here.

I’m not sure about you but I’ve never seen a RoadOne truck that wasn’t an old battle axe like this one. They are very common company to spot near intermodal train yards across the Northeast.

The Hess Truck

Chess. The Rubber Duck. Dominoes. Hot Wheels. All past inductees of the National Toy Hall of Fame. Nominations for the 2014 induction are now being considered and I can think of no better candidate than the Hess Truck. Unlike baseball, the public has a voice when it comes to deciding what toys make the cut. Anyone can submit a nomination form to help make the case for the favorite toy to the selection committee. If we hope to see the Hess Truck join the hallowed ranks of the hall it must meet the following criteria.

  • Icon-status: The toy is widely recognized, respected, and remembered
  • Longevity: The toy is more than a passing fad and has enjoyed popularity over multiple generations
  • Discovery: The toy fosters learning, creativity, or discovery through play
  • Innovation: The toy profoundly changed play or toy design. A toy may be inducted on the basis of this criterion without necessarily having met all of the first three.

So how do our little green and white trucks measure up when it comes to icon status? Strongly! The Hess Truck has also been a fixture of the Macy’s Day parade since 2000 and was most recently incorporated into the 85th anniversary snow globe commemorating the parade. Across the country fire departments have rechristened their rigs to mimic the look and feel of past Hess Truck releases. Check out this real life example created by the Great River Fire Department. Over 300 hours were dedicated to make this truck a reality so it could complete its mission of delivering gifts to children in need. Icon status achieved.

First introduced in 1964 by Hess company founder Leon Hess, the truck will celebrate its 50th anniversary this holiday season. The original hope for the truck was to provide a fun, high quality, and affordable toy during the holiday season. As I noted in past articles Hess Trucks are an extremely well built toy. The rigs I received as a child were played with hard and traveled countless miles across carpeted floors loaded with all sorts of imaginary cargo. Pulling them out of storage boxes years later revealed trucks that survived not only childhood but years of neglect during my foolish teenage years.  All the the pieces were there, the lights worked, the doors opened and closed. Longevity, the Hess truck has it.

2013 Hess Truck

2013 Hess Truck

Did you know the first truck was a tanker that could be filled with water and emptied through an attached hose? Too cool. With each successive model year the Hess Truck morphed into a different vehicle. Some trucks came with boats, others with helicopters, some with race cars and one even had the space shuttle. Complete with realistic sounds, lights, rubber tires, and opening doors the Hess Trucks were often the next best thing to a real big rig a child could get. A few trucks even came with cargo that could be removed, a feature I adored as a child. Even as a 31 year old I was amazed and entertained with the features and the non restrictive nature of the truck. Check out my review of the 2013 model for a better picture of the fun these trucks inspire. Discovery achievement unlocked.

Not Always A Truck!

Not Always A Truck!

How did you come to access this site? I know it was an electronic device of some sort like a laptop, phone, or tablet. It doesn’t take an observant person to realize the children of today have these gadgets on their person nearly 24/7. Realizing this change in culture the modern Hess Truck can now interact with your smart device through the use of its sounds. Children can interact with the truck in both the real and digital worlds. No surprise really when you consider the Hess Truck was one of the first toy trucks to come with working lights and sound. A natural progression if you ask me. Innovation comes standard with the Hess Truck.

I hope I’ve made a convincing case for the Hess Truck. I’ll step down from my soap box now and let you make your decision. If you would like to submit a nomination you can do so by clicking here. The induction ceremony takes place in November of 2014 but the selection process begins now!

Super Trucks

The trucks and heavy equipment you see on this site happen to be the ones I come across on a daily basis while going through the everyday motions of life. More often than not the rigs most common to me come from the vocational side of the fence. Dump trucks, garbage trucks, mixers, lowboys, etc, etc. It’s rare that I see a setup like the one below.

Hunts Point Terminal Market Truck

It’s funny to think that if I worked at the Hunts Point Terminal Market a machine like this Kenworth would almost be common place. Or maybe for everyone of these trucks you have to see 300+ white, bone stock, Freightliner/International Procadias. Perhaps I live in the wrong part of the world as the dump trucks in Rhode Island look like this. I’m working on getting the full resolution photo so stay tuned!

Thanks to Joe B. and my father for sharing these cool rides.
