Autocar Mondays – Autocar AT Grapple Truck

Today we return once again to the far eastern portion of NYS for Autocar Mondays with another great contribution from Clarence.

2014-05-04_15.50.17

You don’t see many Autocar ATs around these days, much less one setup with a log grapple (Hood) on the back. Clarence tells us this truck is still actively working which is great news to hear. It doesn’t look that beat up yet, a trend I hope continues as the work days pile up.

Road Work Ahead

So here is a video that I’ve been gathering footage over the past three weeks. If you enjoy watching road construction this video is for you. I’ve got some excavators ripping up streets, dozers pushing gravels, rollers rolling, and cement trucks cementing. Most of the clips are short and sweet so hopefully I don’t lose your attention.

Also included in today’s post are some photos random heavy equipment plus a few trucks that I should have included in the post from yesterday.

The crane in the gallery below was used to lift the large cement cover seen on the back of the purple Peterbilt. I didn’t see it happen but I know it did. Sorta like a tree falling in the woods doesn’t make a sound if you’re not there to see it…or maybe it does?

Dump Trucking

Today, a dump truck variety pack. As per the course of the past weeks these shots come to us from a variety of locations throughout the downtown area as streets are reduced to little more than rubble so they can be rebuilt from the ground up.

Gentlemen, The streets of Syracuse, barely passable now. We can rebuild them. We have the technology. We have the capability to make them smoother, wider, stronger. Better than they were before. *bionic man sound plays*

Some of these are new to us while others are not. The red Peterbilt from a few weeks past makes another appearance as it was too good looking in the bright sun to pass up. The Mack Trucks of Leitz Trucking are the stars of the video and gallery below.

Tomorrow, the heavy equipment!

Oshkosh Drill Rig Truck

Some trucks have it. Others don’t. This truck my friends, an Oshkosh P-Series, has it in spades.

I spotted this beast the other day on the Connective Corridor project. A crew of workers from M.L. Caccamise were getting ready to drill a hole to support a new traffic control light. I waited to the last possible minute before heading to work for the day to get a shot of it in action but it wasn’t meant to be. I stopped back during lunch to find the hole drilled and the concrete poured. It appears they brought this truck out for just one post. Good enough for me! I had hoped the drill rig motors were Detroit powered but to my horror they sounded like gas jobs. Short video of it idling below.

Alkane Truck Company

Looks like there is a new truck manufacturer hitting the scene by the name of Alkane Truck Company. It takes a brave soul or a company with a truly innovate product to experience success in the mature business that is the North American heavy truck market. So which one is Alkane? With some sort of base out of North Carolina, ATC is seeking to be the only truck builder with an all propane powered lineup. By using a Ford sourced V-10 Triton engine and six speed transmission the company hopes to jump on the growing bandwagon of alternative fueled vehicles. The U.S. is more the capable of providing this energy source through domestic production so I feel this is a good thing. Visiting their website shows a variety of models but it appears from press releases the P-33 (33,000 GVW) and the P-26 (25,999 GVW) are the primary focus. All photos are computer generated so I remain skeptical until I see one the flesh. Below is a rendition of the Class 7 offering.

Very European styling. The lights remind me of a Volvo, the air scoops remind me of a Scania. Larger Class 8 trucks are also mentioned at the Alkane website which are powered by Cummins Westport engines and Eaton transmissions. Every domestic manufacturer of commercial trucks offers some sort of natural gas or propane options so it remains to be see what kind of foothold Alkane will grab. I’m not sure how receptive U.S. buyers will be of the body styling. We like long hoods and big stacks in this here country! Just kidding…but only a little. At the end of the day money talks.

The International Loadstar

The International Loadstar, the truck that lead International Harvester to dominance of the medium duty truck market in the mid 60’s to the late 70’s. The Loadstar would eventually give way to the S-Series which proved to be just as, if not more, successful than its predecessor. Today we have the good fortune to view trucks that are Still Working and one that is close the Lost and Found category.

I’ve passed this truck nearly every Sunday for years on the way to church….and never bothered to take a photo until last week! It moves around the field from time to time but currently has been resting in the spot you see below for nearly a year. It definitely seems solid enough to be saved or used daily. For many years it had a partner, another Loadstar, that at one time was a fire truck. It had a fancy chrome grill and all the lights. Sadly the fenders were smashed and the frame looked tweaked. One weekend it was gone, never to return.

Andy sends in this cool crew cab variant he spotted hauling horses. You’ll notice that the Loadstar script is different on this truck while the fenders have lost the parking lights. I believe this indicates this truck is the youngest of the group.

In the gallery below you can’t help but notice that lime green flatbed. It must have been a firetruck in a previous life but now finds work on a local farm. Ignore my pink bicycle, I forgot to take of the frame before grabbing a shot. Geographically speaking it resides only minutes away from the red dump truck. A true International hotspot if there was one!

Thanks go out to Andy for sharing his great catch.

Autocar Mondays – Autocar and Friends

Can you believe Erie County (NY) still has Autocars to surplus? As of April 2014 they are still crossing the auction block in various forms of destruction. A few weeks ago Dan was nice enough to stop by the marshaling yard and grab shots for us to enjoy.

Now I thought I was going to be able to tell you all the detailed specs of this truck by simply looking up the auctions results from Auctions International but it appears this truck was never sold through that service. I don’t put much faith in the search engine at AI but if accurate it could mean there is still a chance to buy this rig in the near future.

When it comes to this Oshkosh I can tell you the information you want to know. The year, 1960. The model, W-827-10. Under the hood, according to the listing, a weak 6 cylinder Cummins resides along with a broken clutch. Over all the mechanical and body conditions are listed as poor.

I don’t care what they say I would still buy this truck if money grew on trees. Plus those Brockway mudflaps are awesome. The final price for this Oshkosh was $1,525 bucks which probably means it went to the scrap man. To view the original listing click here.

A big thanks to Dan for checking these rigs out for us!

Snow Plows Update

Naked plow truck season is fully upon us now but it looks like there is at least one prude in the crowd, this Western Star 4900 for the Town of Frankfort.

This one has been sitting at Tracey’s Road Equipment for a few weeks. So many weeks in fact that I was able to grab different shots of it over multiple visits. Another interesting truck of note is this Mack CH of the Fred Burrow’s fleet. It’s not often in NYS you a private contractor with a setup like this as the numerous layers of government have exclusive plowing power. A truck like this would be a more common site in Massachusetts were contractors play a major role in snow removal.

In the gallery below are some new trucks if you don’t happen to be a visitor to my flickr account. In order of appearance we have a City of Syracuse International 7600, an International 4800 for the Village of East Syracuse, and an International 2674 for the Town of Camillus.

The Return of Ready Mix Trucks

It’s been quite awhile since the likes of the trucks below have graced the pages of Daily Diesel Dose. It really wasn’t my choice not to have any cement trucks the past few months but you know multiple polar vortexes and record snow falls really are not conducive to concrete work. Whatever evil wizard cast the spell of eternal winter has now died and the warm weather has brought our friends back.

WELCOME TO THE CONCRETE JUNGLE! Sorry, but a front discharge mixer has nothing on this truck. NOTHING! Vitale & Robinson Concrete happen to the be the owner of this beastly Mack truck. They also happen to the operators of the ungainly looking Oshkosh F2346 (here too)and a very well preserved Ford L9000.

Here we have a Cranesville Block mixer helping to set freshly installed granite curbs. This was a fluid operation with the truck never really stopping. Watch for video to soon be available!

Below in the gallery is another shot of the awesome Mack mixer along with a what appears to be a brand new Terex for Saunders Concrete. Speaking of galleries, have you checked out the B-Roll recently? It’s growing by leaps and bounds!

Vac Trucks

I first saw this truck a few weeks ago as it was inching through downtown traffic. For a moment I thought about stopping to take a photo but changed my mind at the last second. Of course I was instantly racked with regret and wondered if I would ever get another crack at this truck. Wandering the streets aimlessly the other morning I had my shot to grab redemption.

It looks like I may have some dirt on my camera lense but the spots really don’t detract from the near mint condition of the International 2674. Not bad for a truck that is probably 12 years old or more. This truck belongs to a branch of Onondaga County government know as the Department of Water Environment Protection. Keeping the fashion of other county vehicles the truck number is crudely spray painted on the side.

On the newer side of the fence you will find this Western Star 4700 of Kandey Co Inc. This truck has been a regular on the Connective Corridor construction scene. I believe it is being used to dig holes for pipes and other electrical conduit. Despite crossing paths with this truck during beautiful sunny weather I’ve only bothered to take a shot of it when the sky is grey and overcast. Go Figure
