Cabover Kings

Fans of the cabover your website has arrived! If you don’t know about the little gem that is www.caboverkings.com I suggest you stop by for a visit. The site is operated by two brothers, Russ and Dan, who have a fairly extensive collection of cabover trucks from nearly every brand and make. They have assembled thirteen pages of photos, stats and anecdotes relating to their time with each truck and its history. As their site says, if its got a hood it’s no good!

Here is a Mack ’78 Mack F-Model that I shot at the ATHS National Meet in Springfield, MA two years ago. Something to prime the pump as they would sya, check out page 5 of cabover king for their F-Model and Cruiserliner.

Ice Logging

There once was a show on Discovery called Extreme Loggers. I don’t remember watching it myself but the premise seems to focus on various logging crews from around North American using various techniques to harvest wood. The opening credits actually show the crew of Bobby Goodson before they landed their own dedicated hour long program, Swamp Loggers. At some point Extreme Loggers decided to focus on one operation and selected to a follow Pine Ridge Logging of northern Alberta, Canada.

I’m not sure how many episodes were produced but at least three exist on YouTube. I have placed them in a handy and easy to use playlist for your viewing pleasure. The format of this show is very similar to American Loggers and Swamp Loggers. If you liked either of those two shows you will enjoy this small series. I particularly enjoyed episode three with the tilting of chip trucks to 60 degree angles for the purpose of unloading wood.

Almost Had It

On the commute to work this morning I came across a great truck shot; a Peterbilt with a triaxle lowboy. Between the incline of the road and the cold weather the pipes were smoking away. The early morning light and cold air really made the chicken lights stand out. On the back of the trailer was a unique load, a tracked off road dump truck. I was in the passenger seat which gave me the perfect angle on the rig. Looking up the road I could see a break in traffic coming from the opposite direction. The stars were lining up. I rolled down and the window, grabbed my camera and framed the shot. My finger hovered over the shutter button. I was just seconds away from an amazing photo. One, two, three…generic Honda CUV enters the frame at the last possible second and ruins everything. *RAGE FACE*

STOP BEHIND THE STOP LINE PEOPLE!

Not all was lost, the truck, a Peterbilt from Moulton’s Towing was taking the same path as me to the interstate. I was able to grab a few “through the windshield” pics before he disappeared over the horizon. Here is the best one.

Last year Dan was able to catch the same truck carrying another tracked piece of equipment in western New York. Click here to see. No Hondas got in his way.

Verizon Twins

Do you remember the games that used to come on children’s place mats at high quality dinning establishments like Denny’s, Perkins, or Friendly’s? They helped to occupy the children from the long waits that parents had no choice but to endure each Saturday morning during breakfast. One game in particular involved spotting the differences between two similar photos. The Verizon trucks below offer a similar challenge. At first glance they seem identical but if you take a moment I’m sure you can spot more than a dozen differences.

International 2674 Snow Plows

I really like the look of the International 2674. I know compared to modern rigs like the new Western Stars and Freightliners running around this truck is ancient technology but I just can’t get enough of them. If I was driving one for a daily living I may feel different but I’m not so my mind is made up. Yesterday I came across truck 136 of the Onondaga County DOT as it patrolled its assigned route.

Lovely. Most of the OCDOT trucks I spy come from the North Area Maintenance Facility which is home to a diverse group (click here) of trucks. At least four International 2674’s are based out of this garage with truck 136, truck 124, truck 191 and truck 57. Sources in the know with more experience than myself have pegged a few these trucks around the 2001 vintage. If accurate (they are) I have to think these trucks are quickly moving up the replacement list. The old saying stands true; Catch them while you can!

Also in the gallery is Truck 187, a International WorkStar. We’ve seen this one before, click here.

Didn’t See That Coming

I went to bed Friday night with plans to tackle all sorts of home related tasks the following day. The weather had been mild all week so I was toying with the idea of taking down the Christmas lights and making a run to the scrap yard to get rid of my dead hot water tank. The sounds of plows going by the house around 5AM Saturday morning changed all that. I guess I need to start checking the weather reports as I was totally unaware that five plus inches of snow was scheduled to fall from the skies. You won’t hear me complaining but my wife on the other hand….

Like all other good Central New Yorkers we ignored the weather and went about our usual weekend errands which put us in the path of some plows of various varieties.

Hitting the roads shortly before Noon we passed plenty of trucks heading back and forth along their routes and more than a few heading back to their garages for shift changes. This Onondaga County DOT Volvo was busy make a loop near a busy shopping center.

Nearby the private contractors were at working dodging shopping carts and shoppers alike while keeping the parking lots clear. This large Michigan L120 was more than nimble enough for the narrow aisles.

This loader works together with a smaller Volvo, a Ford F-650 and one bad looking Oshkosh. I was hoping to see the ‘Kosh running around but you probably have to stop by early in the morning or late at night to see it in action. Maybe someday.

While the wife was getting her nails done I traveled up the street to another shopping center to check out the action. I was greeted a smaller version of the Michigan (maybe Vovlo) loader I had just left. Three other Michigan/Volvo loaders were in action at this location. They must make good snow machines.

By the time we returned home the sun was shining and the main roads were clear and starting to dry. I captured one final shot for the day when the village truck passed by the house. It has a nice engine brake, maybe someday I’ll capture it on video.

No need to wait for the loaders, here they are in glorious HD.

Big Truck Book – February ’88

I mentioned a few weeks ago that as I child I would spend countless hours browsing through books like Commercial Truck Trader. Over the years I amassed quite a collection. Sadly in a moment of weakness I dumped them all under the guise of getting organized. However, one survived. The grandfather of them all that started the obsession. The February 1988 edition of Auto Trader’s Big Truck Book, U.S. National Edition.

Looking at the cover you can tell we’re in for some goodies. This publication contains more cabovers than you can shake a stick at. Trucks that are rare by todays standards are plentiful. GMC Generals? At least two dozen. White Road Boss? Too many too count. International, Peterbilt and Kenworth blur together in a haze of black and white poorly framed photos.

Let’s take a look at two pages that sum up this 244  page plus collection of vintage iron. Click to enlarge.

I feel like I’m looking at the back pages of Wheels of Time! Look at that selection. That ’78 Autocar looks nice. Or what about that 71 Diamond Reo with twin screw! That seems to be a phrase that has left the modern pages of Truck Trader. Maybe you prefer a nice 73 White or Mack RS-700L with a 235 turbo. Endless selection. Unbeatable prices.

As I mentioned, I spent years staring at this particular Trader. Page after page is filled with notations on what trucks I liked. What prices I felt were too high or to low. At one point I even tried to color a few of the trucks with less than stellar results. I still remember the day my dad bought this book for me. Our family had made a regular trip to a second hand book store contained in an old warehouse on the northside of the city. The collection of books this place had was amazing. Despite the boundless classic literature I was drawn to this used copy of Auto Trader. Why anyone thought they could sell a publication like this nearly five years after its original print date is beyond me but I’m glad they did. It has been a treasured pieces of my truck collection every since and I have to believe this is the last one in existence.

Before the internet this how you sold a truck to a national audience. There was no ebay or craigslist. In the front of the book there is a page of telephone area codes for “quick” reference to help you determine the location of your dream truck. You only on a few lines of text to convey stats, condition, location and contact information. Almost like Twitter but not as annoying. Most of the items for sale seem to be located in the southern part of the country with Florida being a real hotbed.

Last night as browsed this book again I came across just one Brockway. I guess the rest were still working in the hands of their original owners and not yet ready for sale. Looks to be in great shape with a 350 Cummins, power steering and air conditioning!

So there it is. I can scan more pages if people would like to see more. Don’t forget to check out the advertisements for 18-20 year old U-Haul trucks and a truck salvage yard in Alabama that had every type of Detroit you could want. Good times indeed.

Central Concrete Supply Company

Time for more west coast flavor with a small slice of the Central Concrete Supply fleet. CCS doesn’t seem to descriminate when it comes trucks as all varieties and manufactuers are present.

You can never go wrong with a fleet of International PayStars even if there is one Western Star tossed into the mix.

What? Only two photos you say? Don’t worry, check out AllReadyMix.com, a fantastic site managed by long time Daily Diesel Dose contributor Ryan who just happened to supply these great photos.

Autocar Mondays – Ashby Moving Engineers

Here is a fine looking Autocar from the 2007 ATHS national meet that was held in Colorado Springs, CO. The show registration pegs this truck as a 1974 DC9364B model. It wears the logo of Ashby Moving Engineers of Oklahoma City, OK. I performed a Google search hoping to find a still active company but that appears not to be the case. However, I did find a thread at the ATHS forums in which the owner of this truck, Dean Ashby, recounts some of his finer memories of when the company was still in operation. It’s well worth the read. Plenty of amazing photos as well. Click here to visit.

This truck came to the show complete with dollys. It’s ready to move something!

This rig reminds me very much of a past Autocar Mondays star, the Construcktor of Cherry House Moving. Click here to reminisce.
