Lost and Found – Brockway 155

Reader Frank came upon this Brockway during a recent motorcycle ride through the Pennsylvanian countryside. He was nice enough to share this photo with us. I’m going to make an educated guess and peg this truck as a 155 model but in reality I have no idea. That horrible looking modern bumper is really throwing me off.

Frank recalls that this truck was found on US 6 between Welsboro, PA and US 220. Great catch!

Ice Road Truckers – Season 7

Warning! Spoliers below!

Ice Road Truckers is back for season seven on History. For some this is a time for rejoicing. For others this is time to groan, shake your head and the flip to another channel. I have always been able to enjoy IRT on some level. In past seasons when the fake horn sound was in full swing and the narrator insinuated at the end of every episode that driver would break through the ice (never happened and thank God for that) I retreated to my safe place of just watching for the trucks. Believe it or not the past few seasons have been rather enjoyable. The dubbed horn is gone. The continuity between exterior/interior shots has improved. The drives are as enjoyable as ever. For those of you who dislike reality TV stay away! Over produced segments and personal drama still exist. After all, we’re talking television here. I’m fairly sure a show that revolved around hard working truckers doing pretrip inspections and sharing the road in a safe manor wouldn’t make it past one episode. That is not to say the cast of IRT do not work hard. They certainly do but at the root of it all a TV show is being produced.

So now that season seven has premiered what is different? To begin the show has returned to its roots of focusing on just one ice road. Whether this is by choice is unknown. The show has been uninvited from other winter roads in the past. We find that Hugh and Vlad have joined forces to form their own company of VPExpress. They explain they are on a noble crusade to defeat Mark of Polar Industries who just so happens to be their employer from last season. You may recall that Hugh left on less than friendly terms when he failed to make the return on his investment. Hugh tells us he is going to put Polar Industries out of business in the name of justice. He does seem genuinely PO’d about last season. Literally down the street sits Mark who is equally upset at what he perceives to be backstabbing former workers out to take what he has built over the past five years. Despite what we have seen on past season the animosity between these two groups is high and not produced. Real world items like money and a way of life are at stake this time, not some foolish load count that means nothing at the end of the season.

Polar Industries is staffed this year by Lisa Kelly, Alex Debogorski and Darrell Ward. When it comes to getting out loads on IRT I feel this is a good crew. Darrell is almost machine like when it comes to completing loads. He just plain works around the clock. Alex has a similar work ethic that is only impeded by his personal health although last season he was fine. Lisa is similar in skill and drive to both Alex and Darrell. Despite the rants of Hugh that claim she is not a real trucker and that she can not do the job because she is a woman I believe she will be fine. Hell, Rick Yem managed to survive last year so if he can do it anyone can. BTW, Rick is a no show this season which is probably a good move on the part of VP Express.

VP Express is obviously operated by Hugh and Vlad along with rookie driver Art Burke. By the time episode one is over Art will already be in hot water with Hugh. Less experienced drivers do not fair well under his direction. Hugh his more on top of people than ever before now that his wallet is directly involved. I expect many fireworks from this combo as the season moves on. The truck of choice seems to be Internationals, mostly 9900i and 9400i models for VP.

All in all I think Polar has the better staff at the moment. Darrell seems especially motivated to engage Hugh all season in the quest to defeat VP Express.

Speaking of Darrell, episode one gave us plenty of seat time with him as he was the first driver to hit the roads. His truck this season is an impressive looking Western Star with a set back axle. We are treated to numerous shots of him blasting through deep snow and drifting around corners. I don’t care if this is for TV or not, it looks cool. At one point we are treated to his thoughts on breaking through the ice. Better to stay with the cab and drown than to slowly freeze on the surface he reasons. The realities of ice road trucking I suppose.

So far I am happy with this season. I was starting to grow weary of the Alaskan scenery and shot after shot of blue Carlile Kenworths. Yes, the roads are steep and slick. Yes, you need chains. Yes, it is cold. Until next week keep it between the lines.

At the Dealer – International 9900i and Mack Pinnacle

Two beautiful trucks today courtesy of the dealer lots at Stadium International and Beam Mack. I am pleased that International has decided to keep the 9900i line going in these days of strange bubble curve looking trucks. This truck is sporting a Maxxforce engine which makes it a last of breed. I believe any new 9900i is available only with the Cummins ISX15.

Also representing a more “throw back” look is this Mack Pinnacle. We live in a strange world in which the Pinnacle name is bolted upon two different trucks. The example below is the daycab setup. If you were to order a Pinnacle with a sleeper you would get an completely different looking truck.

The sleeper version looks like this.

Sharp looking trucks no matter the name.

Hawkins Amusement Rides

The Ford trucks below are something like a time machine for me. I have memories of these very same trucks from decades ago as each summer they were used to setup the local Firemens Field Days. Back then the Fords were probably close to being brand new and all things considered they still look to be in decent shape. Living directly behind the lot that housed the Field Days I was treated to the sites and sounds of these trucks each July. When it came to noise the 150KW Detroit Diesel generator was the king of them all. It would echo through the neighborhood from late afternoon to well after midnight. Secretly I enjoyed the sound while the rest of my family kept the windows closed and the AC cranked up. I seem to have memories of a Ford CL-9000 that was part of the fleet. It looked great in the Hawkins colors but it now appears to have been replaced by rather boring looking blue International. It was still with the company as of 2010 according to this photo.

The Detroit is now partnered with a much larger Caterpillar Diesel. Below is a video of the two in operation. Of course the DD is screaming for its life while the Cat has more of deep steady rumble. Also included in the video is some footage of Continental Red Seal gas engine used to power the Paratrooper. A vintage power plant for a vintage ride.

Lost and Found – Utica Part Two

Over a month ago I shared with you a few photos from Dave T who just happens to be a great fan of the Lost and Found portion of this website. At that time I promised to share more of the photos he submitted. Well, one thing lead to another and before I knew it over a month had passed. Better late than never right?

The gallery begins with a soon to be vintage Western Star. Believe it or not this ‘star is not eligible for the L&F tag just yet. Dave reports that this truck is still used by a Utica based demolition firm. Some of its coworkers include a Autocar dump truck, a Mack R-Model roll-off and 60’s era GMC. I hope we can see the rest of the fleet soon.

Also to be found in the gallery below is a trio of International cabovers. Out of the three the green truck appears to be the only working one of the bunch. As you can see from the photos the solid grey CO is decorated with Christmas lights! The final truck appears to have a set of military style tires and rims up front. A very odd combination for sure.

Algosoo – St. Lawrence Seaway System

I headed up to the Thousand Islands region this past weekend for some camping at Wellesley Island. For those that don’t know the Saint Lawrence River and Seaway cut through this area to form stunning views of both the natural and man made variety. While the majority of the weekend was spent sitting under a canopy watching the rain fall Sunday  provided near perfect weather for watching boats of all shapes, sizes and price ranges.

My wife and I were just about to leave a small park in Alexandria Bay when I noticed a plume of smoke near the horizon. I’m fairly sure I jumped up and down like an excited child when I noticed this freighter slowly making its west. Within 20 minutes the ship known as the Algosoo had finally reached the range of my camera. It passed directly in front of Boldt Castle to form the nice photo you see below. Come to find out the Algosoo is a self unloading bulk carrier owned by the Algoma Central Corporation.

Before the trip I did some research to find the location of the seaway locks in relation to our camp site. Unfortunately the nearest lock was over a hour away so I scratched plans for a visit but I did discover a nifty tool on the official website of the seaway. Turns out you can view a map of all the ships currently making their way through the Great Lakes Seaway System. This includes all the locks, canals and lakes from the Atlantic Ocean to Thunder Bay Ontario. You can view the map by clicking here.

By using the site above we can see that since yesterday the Algosoo has navigated the length of Lake Ontario and is currently moving through the Welland Canal. The Welland allows ship traffic access between Lakes Ontario and Erie. Visiting the website marinetraffic.com shows the eventual destination of the Algosoo as Toledo, Ohio with an arrival of 11PM EST on June 10th, 2013.

Wow! That’s a lot of information but were not done yet. More searching reveals a great website by the name of boatnerd.com that has a very nice history of our friend the Algosoo. Much has happened to this ship over the 39 years since its launch including fires, collisions, groundings, and rescue missions of other freighters. It’s a good read that I recommend.

Diamond T – Junkyard Find

I have to step away from the website for a few days so until I return please enjoy this junkyard Diamond-T tour. It appears to have a tilt hood and probably originates from the final years of Diamond-T. If you know better please feel free to chime in.

International Fire Trucks

I’ve caught some nice looking fire trucks at the local International dealer of the past few months. The first truck is 2010 Workstar for the Scipio Volunteer Fire Company. The tank out back has a 3500 gallon capacity and is paired to a 750 gpm pump. You can learn more by visiting the SVFC website by clicking here.

Oshkosh H-Series Blower

This Sunday (6/9) America’s favorite reality trucking show returns to the television screens across the country. Yup, Ice Road Truckers is back. I’ve only seen one promo for the show and that was dedicated to a singular topic, the return of Lisa Kelly. Based on this footage it looks like she might be driving for Polar Industries. The same company Hugh and Rick worked for last year. It would make sense that the producers would put Lisa at Polar considering the destruction Hugh Roland Inc left in its wake. It naturally produces a B.S. rich environment! Of course, I could be wrong and she could be driving back in Alaska. Guess I will just have to watch to find out.

Former IRT Dave Redmon has an interesting Youtube channel built around his rants regarding the show. At the very least he throws out some interesting behind the scenes knowledge regarding the filming of the series. According to Dave drivers like Hugh are paid for their expenses including fuel, tires and repairs. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me. This would explain Hugh’s preference for busted trucks. If you’re looking to ease back into the drama that is IRT check out his videos.

So what does this fine Oshkosh H-Series blower have to do with IRT? The answer is..nothing! I supposed a connection could be made between ice, snow and harsh winter conditions. Did you know the H-Series can move 5,000 ton of snow per hour while throwing it nearly 200 feet?

This H-Series has been sitting at the local Oshkosh dealer for a few weeks now.  I first saw this truck a local “Diggers and Dumpers” children’s event. I guess one of those little kids broke it.

As in seasons past I may do a recap of IRT episodes I find to be interesting or entertaining. Stay tuned!

Ice Road Truckers season 7 premiers Sunday, June 9th at 10/9c.

Autocar AT Dump Truck

Autocar Mondays are back! Or at least for this Monday. I recently discovered that a local company by the name of Diamond Paving has two Autocar AT models in their fleet. Of course we’re talking Autocars here so the actual model might be something different.
