Truck Spotting – Hiawatha Blvd

Today we have the result of truck spotting that took place on Hiawatha Blvd. The activity on this four lane stretch of road is constant. Plenty of trucks heading to the Roth Steel and other industrial businesses in the neighborhood.

Looking at the galleries below we have a Freightliner for Moulton’s Towing. A Peterbilt for JPW Riggers. A straight Mack Superliner and late model Peterbilt. A semi wrecker for Big Red Towing on a International 9300 Eagle chassis. The last three trucks in the set belong to EJ Transport of Wynantskill, NY.

Truth be told the JPW truck was shot on a different street but who is checking? This stretch of road turned out to be a real gold mine. Everything you see here rolled by within a 20 mintues. Further down the road there was non stop dump truck activity relating to the dredging of Onondaga Lake. A return visit is in the works.

Still Working – Syracuse Haulers Autocar

I may be out of vintage Autocar photos to share but that doesn’t mean Autocar Mondays have to end! If you have been here from the very start and by that I mean April 14th 2011 then you might remember this truck. This Autocar was the very first truck featured in the still working category over two years ago. I am happy to report this rig is still running strong. We crossed paths last Wednesday at the Ley Creek station. It’s a good place to truck hunt if you don’t mind the smell of garbage.

CSX Kenworth

I was heading down the interstate the other day when I noticed a truck with flashing lights taking the next exit. Naturally I followed it in hopes of getting a better view. This wasn’t my exit but you just never know what you will find. The truck turned out to be a CSX lettered Kenworth hauling a brush cutting tractor. CSX trucks are fairly common around this area but I have never seen a Kenworth in their fleet before. I wanted to get a better shot of this setup for you, my loyal visitor, so at the next light when the truck went straight I went left. I had a hunch that he was heading to the very same repair yard that housed the American crane from last week. My shortcut paid off and I was able to take up a position on the side of the road moments before the Kenworth approached from the opposite direction. In my excitement I forgot to select the right camera mode so the rig is a little blurry but still cool.

The very next day on the way to work as I gazed off the overpass of a 690 I spotted this exact truck and tractor leaving the yard using the same streets as before. Feast or famine.

Freightliner Coronado SD of Q-Line Trucking

One of my new favorite locations to catch trucks is a little stretch of road known as 7th North Street. For the Syracuse area this is truck spotting central. Why it took me so long to put the pieces together I don’t know. To start you have a very busy Pilot truck stop. To sweeten the deal Stadium International is located across the street. For the garbage truck fans there is solid waste transfer station at the corner. All this produces a healthy mix of OTR, vocational and the odd ball combo when it comes to trucks. Oh yeah, I-81 (North/South) and I-90 (East/West) converge at this spot. Basically the action never stops. It doesn’t matter what time of the day you stop by. Over the past few weeks I’ve grabbed more than a few interesting shots from this location. Two nights ago I came across this massive load.

Aye carumba! You are looking at one massive excavator arm. Just imagine the size of the machine it comes from! Wow. Searching the company name of Kiewit reveales a business that is involved in every manor of heavy construction and engineering. Based on the locations this arm could be heading to mines in Quebec or Newfoundland. Really, these are a just guess based on geographic location.

The company doing the hauling is Q-Line Trucking. Check out their website by clicking here. Plenty of great shots to enjoy.

A few more from the “b roll”.

More 7th North action to come in the following days including Autocar Roll-Offs, aluminium slug hauling and just about everything else.

Bristol Myers Squibb Demolition – One Month Later

A little over a month has passed since my last coverage of the Bristol Myers-Squibb demolition job. The work site looks completely different now and for a local such as myself the new view is amazing although slightly sad. The two large buildings and their foundations that existed just a few weeks ago are now completely demolished. Work has moved onto processing the leftover concrete and bricks of the massive plant. I affectionately refer to this pile as Mt. Bristol. A crusher and screener is onsite slowly transforming large pieces of debris into smaller pieces.

So far the crushed material hasn’t left the site. It’s very possible that it may be used as fill as the transformation continues. A small army of four to five dump trucks is running a loop from behind the plant. They bring load after load of topsoil to fill what was once the basements of the demolished buildings. RH Law Inc is responsible for this part of the job.

It looks like heavy demolition is just about done on the Bristol campus. The largest machine (a Case) used in the demolition has already been dismantled and hauled away. Up near the site office there is a growing collection of specialty attachments like shears and claws just waiting for the ride home. Speaking of a ride home…check this out.

This Peterbilt and its massive trailer showed up to haul away the Case excavator. Tuesday afternoon everything was loaded and chained down. The boom and counterweight had already been removed and carried offsite. It was simply impossible to fit the entire setup into frame based on the length and a group of annoying trees. As fate would have it I had already taken a day off of work so I held onto hope that I would be able to see this truck on the move. I stopped by bright and earlier Wednesday morning but there was no activity. I swang by a few hours later and still nothing. Around 11AM I was back again and this time the driver was in the cab and a pilot car was standing by! I became excited. I milled around for 20 minutes or so but it became apparent nothing was going to happen anytime soon. The driver was looking at a huge map. The pilot car driver was reading a book. The local crew stopped by to talk about lunch. I decided to move on to greener pastures. Returning 90 minutes later revealed a very large empty parking spot. I was in a funk the rest of the afternoon. Oh well, at least my greener pastures produced some other interesting trucks for another day.

Here you can see how large the Case excavator is.

Standing in my backyard each morning I can hear the sounds of the continuing demo work. Trucks using their jake breaks. Backup alarms. Diesel engines running at full bore. Large booming sounds. It’s all music to my ears. A part of me we will feel sad when the site work is done. I’m sure most of my neighbors will not feel the same way. Soon there will be nothing left to remind us of the factory that once produced the wonder drug penicillin and the strange smell that hung in the air most days of the week.  The remaining Bristol employees will gain a manicured green space while daily commuters on Thompson Road can now see the Village of East Syracuse. It looks rather nice. I know the whole process is bittersweet to many former employees. My father happens to be one. My mother tries not to look each time she drives by but you can’t help to stare and remember what once was.

More shots of the action.

Click here for some video action of the “reserve dirt” being removed and moved. Or you can click here for some crusher feeding activity. There is great shot of the Peterbilt at the start of this video.

Tow Trucks of Utica

Dave T. stops by again with a great collection of tow trucks (and one plow) from Utica, NY. The truck below works out of shop that restores and hotrods vehicles. It appears to be a International D-Series with plenty of custom trim. Each time I look at this photo I find another cool piece. This is a really neat looking truck that appears rather solid.

Browsing through the gallery bellow you find a pair of GMC TopKicks from the era of massive grills. The red truck belongs to Cupolo and Sons and is used for private tows. The blue TopKick is a 1981 model with a Weld Built wrecker. In a past life it belonged to CENTRO and hauled many a disabled bus back to the garage. Dave tells us it was replaced with a much larger Mack. Out west in Syracuse an International is used for such tasks.

Keeping with the unoffical vehicle of DDD we also have a GMC Brigadier setup as a lot truck for the winter storms.

Stay tuned for more great finds from Dave T. soon!

Town of Cazenovia – Western Star 4900SF

Looks like the Town of Cazenovia is getting a brand new Western Star 4900SF. This truck sports an American Sno-Plows all around. The American brand is part of the Wausau-Everest brand and claims to be the successor the world famous Frink make of plows. Between the 4800 and 4900 models Western Star has really made inroads amoung the CNY plow fleet this season. Kudos to the Tracey Road Equipment sales team for pushing their product. Could this 4900 be the replacement to a beefy ‘85 Mack RD that recently sold at auction?

Hendrickson Twin Steer Driller

Some neat shots today of a twin steer Hendrickson belonging to Buffalo Drilling Company. Andy spotted this truck a few years back while it was helping to construct the foundation of a new building.

Autocar Tanker Truck – Power Test

Today is a sad day. This is the last Autocar Monday posting until I obtain new material. Until then we can enjoy the final photo and the many who came before it.

As you can see the notes below the photo indicate the owner of the truck was a Clearview Concrete Pipe. I’m not sure what the Power Test script on the truck and tanker have to do with concrete. Any ideas?

Still Working – International S-Series Dump Truck

This past Thursday I was staking out a busy truck watching spot in downtown Syracuse. I was about to call it quits when I heard this International approaching from the opposite side of the avenue. There was no mistake about the power plant from the notes played by the exhaust pipe. DETROIT POWER! I hung out for another 10 minutes are so hoping the truck would return back down the same path. The Detroit announced the return of the truck before it was visible. I’m not experienced enough to tell you what model. Probably something a make that was popular when this truck was new in the early 80’s. Unfortunately I was standing in the middle of a class 852 hurricane so there is no video that would have helped identify what was under the hood.

The brown paint and white stripe on the hood remind be of the old Waste Management scheme.
