A Chinese International Durastar?

In recent years China has become the land of opportunity for nearly every major car and truck manufacturer on the face of the globe due to its surging automobile market and growing middle class. To gain access this lucrative market foreign manufacturers must form a joint partnership with an existing Chinese company. Sometimes new designs are developed from scratch other times existing models are tweaked to the meet the demands of the Chinese market. This could explain the odd looking Durastar clone below. I found this image while stumbling around the back pages of  a Google search the other day. All of the listing have this truck as a Dongfeng EQ4240. The information from various Chinese websites are spotty at best. Some list this truck as the joint venture fruit between Cummins and Dongfeng. Others simply provide contact information at a generic Yahoo account. To the best of my knowledge International only recently jumped into the Chinese market by forming a partnership with Jianghuai Automobile Co. Of course, it wouldn’t surprise me to find out this truck is simply a poor copy of the Durastar, an all too common occurrence in China. Chinese Humvee anyone? How about an F-150?

Looking at the truck below I can spot a few quirks. First, the door handles are vertical while the American Durastar places them in a horizontal configuration. There also appears to be a sheetmetal bump on the door that is absent from the original model. The headlights are also different but I think I prefer that look. And of course the cab is slightly extended with a small window rear window on either side of the cab.

Teacher’s Pet Pulling Tractor

Now this is a tractor! I was passed by this International Farmall 1066 “pulling” tractor on the interstate a few weeks back. It has two stacks so I’m guessing it’s a twin turbo setup. Probably makes a decent quantity of black smoke but you only live once so who cares? I did some digging around online and I believe I found a story about the tractor here. The article is from 2005 and may be a little dated as the tractor pictured only has one stack. Either way, the article is worth a read if for nothing else than to learn how expensive one of these tractors can run.

And if you’re curious, the wife was driving when I took this shot.

Pay Up

Day three of naked plow coverage continues with this double shot of International Paystars. For the moment you will have to guess which municipality owns the yellow one They yellow trucks belongs to the Town of Windsor. The blue truck belongs to the Town of Oxford. Both trucks were seen at Stadium International’s Binghamton branch in early September.

You Can’t Escape Destiny – International Paystar

Another day another naked snowplow on Daily Diesel Dose. From the start this Paystar was destined to clear the snow clogged streets for the Town of Geddes. No lights no problem. One axle up front, one axle out back. I’m sure it never meet a hill it couldn’t climb. Notice the plow controls on the passenger side of the cab for the wingman.

Look for more Paystar action tomorrow.

Canajoharie Granite

Canajoharie Granite, it has a nice ring to it. I spied this AWD Mack Granite sitting at a local repair shop near the town of…wait for it…Canajoharie! Did you know that Susan B. Anthony once taught school in Canajoharie? Can you tell that I just like typing and saying the word Canajoharie?

A Truck Parade

I still have many videos to process and posts from the 2012 ATHS Hudson Mohawk antique truck show and a few other shows. OH yeah, some pictures as well. The backlog is growing! But with the truck season having ended (for me at least) I hope to make some headway in the coming weeks. The video below shows off all the trucks that world renowned collector, George Tackaberry, brought to the show. The Kenworth and the Mack Superliner performed the hauling duties on this particular day so the other Mack, International Loadstar and Brockway could enjoy the ride.

Still Working – Chevy C70 Dump Truck

When I first spied this truck on the street the thought crossed my mind that I had stumbled through a wormhole and ended up back in the 80’s. It was the only way I could rationalize seeing such a near mint Chevy C70 dump truck working the salt encrusted streets of Syracuse. No scrapes, dents or rust bubbles in sight. Only one explanation is possible. A wizard did it.

This particular contractor has quite the fleet of well maintained older equipment that still sees regular use. For example, this International Loadstar or this International S1900. But I don’t want you to get the wrong impression, Davis Wallbridge Inc does run plenty of new equipment, take a look at this Mack Granite.

Do you know of an old truck that is still earning it’s keep?  Email Me!

It’s a Snow Thing – Jordan Spreader

I’ve posted plenty of plows on Daily Diesel Dose before of all shapes and sizes but I think it’s safe to say none have had a wing like this one. The first thing to catch your eye is the enormous V-Plow up front but that is quickly eclipsed by the massive steel platted wings on either side of the rig. An on-board Detroit Diesel generator provides power for the hydraulics and other systems while a locomotive attaches to the rear of the machine for momentum.  At first I thought this was a in house created machine but a quick Google search of its number reveals this is Jordan Spreader. Designed to do the work of an army of men the Jordan not only breaks through snow and ice but can be used to cut back banks and spread gravel. A machine for all seasons. Click here for more information if you are so inspired you can click here to see the spreader in action.

This shot gives you a better view of the massive wings. Talk about steel!

It’s a Dirty Job

There are plenty of specialized trucks in this big old world of ours. Each make, model and variety has its own set of fan. Some like fire trucks while other enjoy highly customized OTR Petes and Kenworths. It may surprise you that is there is group of truck fans out there that puts all others to same when it comes to the sheer amount of content they produce. I’m talking about the garbage truck aficionados. Yup, the humble garbage truck has a devoted base of fans. Take a journey over to Youtube and type in the simple phrase garbage truck and you will be greeted with hours upon hours of video. I don’t have any video..yet…to add to the fun but here are some photos.

This Freightliner Condor may have seen better days but it is still in the trenches fighting the never ending battle against trash. The Condor is now a “legacy” product in the eyes of Freightliner. Unlike other manufactures who quickly move on to new models and forgot the trucks of the past Freightliner has an entire segment of their website devoted to older models no longer in production. It’s neat and I wish other builders would do the same. You can check out the Condor page by clicking here.

Representing a more modern take on trash collection is this Syracuse City School District International Workstar. It hasn’t been beat to a pulp yet but give it a few years.
