The Power Platform

Here is a unique twist on a speciality vehicle.  At first glance the Power Platform by CCI looks like a harvester for grain or wheat but upon closer inspection it is much more.  Designed for a variety of attachments at both the front and rear of the machine the Power Platform is also available with a dump body.  This may be a big machine but front, coordinated, and crab steering allow for a turning radius smaller than an F-150.  What farmer hasn’t dreamed of hauling ass down the country back roads at 55+mph while pulling a trailer of corn? CCI is betting both farmers and municipalities alike will take to the Power Platform to replace their tractors and trucks. Only time will tell.

King of Trucks Super Show 2011

The King of Trucks Super Show has came and left.  What a show it was.  Plenty of lifted trucks, lowered trucks, mud trucks and rock trucks.  Trucks, trucks, trucks.  The mud pit caused plenty of chaos.  The off road park destroyed skids plates and rocker panels of many a vehicle.  Only the strongest trucks survived the drag strip and tug-o-war.  Hat’s off to everyone who made it out.  For the most part the weather cooperated.  It was even warm enough for a pool in the back of pickup truck.  If that doesn’t scream America I don’t know what does.  Enjoy some of the photos below.  More to come as the days go by.  Let’s hope the show returns for next year.

International Trucks – The 70’s Roster

The Loadstar, Paystar, Fleetstar, Scout II.  The all star line up of the International Harvester in the 1970’s.  Sadly the Scout would not survive the decade but the others would go on to years of service.  The Paystar is still in production today.  Also introduced was the DT-466 diesel engine.  An engine that lives on today in a variety of International trucks.  Enjoy the sales pitch of years past.

Diesel Motorcycles – They do exist

When creating a custom chopper the builder has many choices to make regarding the setup. Selecting an engine usually has to do with size and power but rarely the fuel source. Gas is king. But some times you need to do something different. Something to set yourself apart from the crowd. That is when our old friend diesel steps in. I can’t say that diesel engines are new to motorcycles. Apparently the British experimented with diesel power plants in Royal Enfield motorcycles with surprising results. Noise, pollution concerns, and complex starting procedures eventually led to the discontinuation of the model. The U.S. military has a specially adapted Kawasaki motorcyles with an engine capable of using diesel or JP8 jet fuel. Fun! But what about the custom edge? How about the Peterbilt trike made by Jesse James and the monster garage crew? Basically just a ridable engine this wonderful creation started life as 1972 Peterbilt and was turned into one awesome death trap by the end of the episode. On the custom chopper front the OCC crew recently finished the build of diesel powered chopper. Variety is the spice of life. Drive Diesel.

Terex Titan – A moving green mountain

When GM ruled the industrial world it did so with a diverse and complex line of products.  Through a large family tree of subsidiaries “the general” produced locomotives, jet engines, muscle cars, bulldozers, city buses, and the common family sedan.  In 1973 one such subsidiary created the largest dump truck of that time, The Terex 33-19, better know as The Titan.  Keeping it in the family the Titan was powered by a turbo charged, intercooled, GM sourced, Electro-Motive diesel locomotive engine.  A 960 gallon fuel(diesel) capacity was required.   All wheel drive was standard, no small feet considering there were a total of ten, 12 foot tall wheels to move .  With the box extended the truck towered nearly five stories above the earth.  The 33-19 was a prototype, the future of mining trucks in the eyes of General Motors.  The company foresaw a future in which the quality of ore would decrease, resulting in the need for mine operators move more material.  This vision was prophetic but would not come to pass for nearly three decades, resulting in only one truck ever reaching completion.  The Titan wore the crown of “world’s largest dump truck” until 1998 when it was surpassed by the Caterpillar 979.  In 1992 the end of the road was reached and the Titan entered it’s golden years at a retirement home in Sparewood, British Columbia.  Stop by and visit some time.

Lost and Found – Mack and International

Today’s lost and found members come to us from the wilds of Madison County, NY. The Mack R-Model and the International Fleetstar are slowly disappearing behind years of overgrowth and brush. They are joined by a Caterpillar and Massey Ferguson (not pictured) dozer. Signs on the International and dozers say M.W. Callahan Excavating, a company lost to time.

*UPDATE OCT, 2011* These trucks and bulldozers are GONE! Most likely to the scrap heap. Look for their return as a Chinese made toaster this Christmas.

ATCA National Show 2011

The Antique Truck Club of America will hold their 32nd annual national show June 17th-19th at Memorial Park in Macungie, PA.  I highly recommend this show.  The truck turn out never disappoints and the vendor/flea market is very large.  Tours of the local Mack Truck factory are usually scheduled with free transportation provided.  Make plans to attend now.

Jet Bus – Schools Out!

Do your kids hate to take the school bus? Here is the solution. The Jet Bus by IndyBoys Inc and Paul Stender is the largest jet powered vehicle on earth.  A J-79 jet engine borrowed from a F-4 Phantom helps propel this people mover at speeds in excess of 350 mph! Tailgaters beware the wrath of 75ft exhaust flames. Maybe the bus is overkill for you. Don’t worry, Paul has you covered with his jet powered outhouse. Check out his site for more info and madness.
