Cat Diesel Power

From the Texas Archive of The Moving Image enjoy this classic title. The first three minutes of this video are nothing but pure gold. It’s full of trucks of many kinds with great sound. After that point it gets a little dry if you don’t enjoy scenes of engines being rebuilt to disco music.

Ford C8000

Ahhhh, the truck show that really isn’t a truck, the annual Palmyra truck and heavy equipment auction. You can always count on at least one old rig to make an appearance. In years past it was Brockway and Autocar. This time around it’s the long livedFord C8000.

Rando Construction

I often neglect my heavy construction equipment fans and for that I’m sorry. Enjoy these random shots I collected during my lunch break today just for you.

I’m not sure why the parking lot isn’t being hauled out as it is removed but I’m sure we’ll find out.

Back in the late fall I made many trips up to “the hill”, the name bestowed upon the campus of Syracuse University, in a vain attempt to catch the demolition of a few buildings. The buildings are long gone and a big hole that will eventually transform into a foundation has begun to form. A nearby parking structure offers some decent site lines. Maybe I’ll make it back up there from time to time.

Hire the Classics

Not too long ago I was in the market for a new driveway. The good people at Pro Pave were right at the top of my list with a very competitive quote and I figured they would my company of choice. After all, they run well maintained classics like two Ford LTL 9000 and these Aeromax twins. How could a self proclaimed truck lover such as myself choose anyone else! Well for some reason I did hire a different company and it’s a shame that I’ve carried around ever since.

I don’t have any complaints about the company that eventually paved my driveway. They did a wonderful job and the service was fantastic but as I watched a brand new Freightliner 108SD dumping a load of blacktop I just couldn’t help but feel I had made the wrong choice.

Hopefully, in time, the classic truck community can forgive me. Until then, look at this Diamond Reo again.

What About Joe?

What do we know about the average Joe behind the wheel of your everyday tractor trailer? We’re about to find out that while some things have changed many others have not.

Tempting Fate

Sure has been a nice string of weather recently. Let’s tempt fate by looking at plows.

We’ll start off with a true power couple, a pair of Onondaga County 6×6 Paystars. In the winter months you can find these trucks with V-Plows busting the drifts of the hill country.

On the topic of Paystars, how about this custom unit from the City of Syracuse? I’ve never seen it on the road.

And lest you think all plows around here date from the ’90s here is a pair of soon to be snow fighters. The only time Macks show up at the Freightliner dealership is to be upfitted with bodies and such.

Hopefully many of these trucks have seen their last runs for awhile including this blower from NYSTA. My quick once over of this unit didn’t provide any clues to the builder. Anyone know?

Autocar Mondays – 1967 A75564T

The model number on this old girl is mouthful but it sure is easy on the eyes. Matt wisely took a few shots of this ’67 Autocar at the Lakeside Sand and Gravel show from a few weeks back. It’s a custom hauler for sure with plenty of details to soak in.

Great looking truck all around. Thanks to Matt for the share!

Lakeside Sand and Gravel 2018

Last year we enjoyed coverage of the Lakeside Sand and Gravel show courtesy of our friend Dan. This year coverage comes to us from noted heavy equipment expert Matt Folsom. I had hoped to attend this show but the distance and the general crappy weather kept me at home on the couch. Maybe next year.

Looks like an awesome show with plenty of neat equipment of both the tracked and wheeled variety running through the paces. Maybe I’ll go next year. Maybe.

Thanks for the photos Matt!

Brockway 457T

All across this great country of ours classic trucks like this Brockway 457T are emerging from a winter of sleep. At times it seemed like this day would never come but it has. Long live the days of spring and summer.

The particular 457 is powered by 6-71 Detroit Diesel connected to a five speed and a 2 speed rear. At one point it was part of the Anderson Truck Lines fleet, a loyal user of Brockway Trucks.

NYSDOT Bingo

Remember when we used to play National Grid truck bingo? Well, at least I did. It was fun for awhile until I stopped seeing any trucks other than Freightliner M2 bucket trucks. A man can not live on Business Class alone! Maybe it’s time to move onto NYSDOT trucks. Yes, there are more than just plows in the fleet.

Look at this fun little ride. It would be perfect for the infield at NASCAR races.

And then there is this mobile drill rig. It seems to be taking samples in the footprint of I-81. If you are from the Syracuse area you know this elevated by-pass cuts through the city and scheduled to reach end of life right about….now. Elected officials and other bureaucrats have been arguing for years about what to do with the replacement. Maybe a tunnel? Boulevard? Barge canal? Study after study. Hundreds of millions down the drain. Nothing to show for it. Just tear the damn thing down already so I get days an days of heavy demo footage.

The one think you’ll notice on both these trucks in the absence of the flying T logo. By mandate under the guise of cost saving every state vehicle now wears the same logo. IT SUCKS! The letter looks fine on a Dodge caravan but is barely large enough on a snow plow.

Ah, another fine old man rant. I’m on a roll recently.
