Autocar Mondays – Work Hard Play Hard

Here is a little gem from the 2010 Washington (NY) County Fair featuring two classic Autocar trucks pulling a sled down down a dirt track. As for the ages and exact models I can only speculate but I can tell you that on the day of the races both trucks were still working daily for a living. That’s right, play on Sunday, work on Monday. I went back to my original footage of the show hoping to learn more specific details of the trucks as I remember the announcer always having something to say about the drivers or the rigs. Sadly he was quiet on these two classics.

If you would like to see more from the Washington County Fair click on this link to see an International M-Series plow pulling for all its worth along with a Continental gas powered Brockway fuel tanker. To see even more including my favorite V12 powered Kenworth click on the Videos link located near the top of the page. Once you make it to Youtube search for Washington and let the internet do the driving.

Mack Trucks and NASCAR

If you plan on watching the Daytona 500 today keep your eyes peeled for a fleet of Mack trucks near the infield. Mack has been named the official hauler of NASCAR, earning a multi year contract with America’s most favorite Motorsports brand. The trucks are powered by a 5o5 horsepower 13-liter MP8 Mack engine connected to a Mack Mdrive transmission. Both set forward and set back axle Pinnacles comprise the fleet. For the inaugural season I think all twelve truck should make a lap or two around the track. Don’t you agree?

Snow Plowing in NYS – The Book

A new book idea has been proposed to me by author M. E. Folsom. He would like to tackle next, “the wonderful world of heavy snow removal”, but this new book will be specific to New York State and more so to the “classic years” of this type of equipment and work “1940 to 1980”. I have been asked to collaborate with him on this very auspicious project which I have been told that this will take a couple of years to develop and write. Mr. Folsom and I are asking for your help with this undertaking; we are in need of good period photographs and information specific to this topic.

New York State offers quite a bit of topography that many types of equipment and work techniques could be covered. From the huge snow districts of the provincial “Tug Hill” and Lake Eire / metropolitan Buffalo area lake effect snow belts, and the high mountains of the Adirondacks and Catskills; to the all the suburbs and urban centers throughout the state right out to the tip of Long Island with classic Nor’easters. In a nutshell all types of settings and action specific to classic NYS big snow removal will be considered and reviewed for publication in this project. Of special interest to Mr. Folsom will be images of snow removal equipment working in and after the famous “blizzard of 1966” especially in the Town of Onondaga, Onondaga County and Syracuse, NY areas.

Photos of old FWD’s, and Oshkosh’s along with any other truck makes of 4×4 , 6×6, and rear wheel drive models equipped as such doing their thing in the white stuff are needed . We would really like to make emphasis of New York State manufactures such as Walter’s, and Brockway for trucks and Frink for plows and lifts. Other equipment photos that will be of use will be all makes of wheel graders with their mold boards and wings and or equipped with front mounted plows, wheel loaders with buckets and snow blades.  Even large crawler tractors equipped with V-plows busting drifts which were used in some townships in rural areas. All types’ period equipment working the white stuff in New York State is wanted. Old sales literature of truck and equipment makers along with plow attachment manufactures would be greatly appreciated too, you guys get the picture or hopefully more so “we get the pictures”. Of course all selected imagery will receive the proper due credit to their respective contributors.

Please email only scanned hi-resolution (at least 600 dpi) B & W and color images, and information to me at  nyplowbook@dailydieseldose.com

Remember only “the classic years of 1940 to 1980” are needed and will be considered.

Thank You.

World of Concrete – Part III

It wasn’t just all about pumpers and mixers at Word of Concrete 2016. Today we look at the other equipment of the industry in the form of block trucks, slingers and even tools used to demolish concrete. The cycle of life in all its many forms. Once again, thanks to Ryan for sharing all these cool shots.

We appreciate all the walking you did! Did you miss Part I and II?

Different World

Life threatening wind chills. Bone crushing cold. Polar vortex. These are just a few of the headlines I read while laying around sunny and warm Florida last week. 🙂

To help ease myself back into winter I figured that my first post since my return should be snow plow update. First up, a new 4×4 truck for the Town of Callicoon, NY. Since I’ve started to pay attention to the destination tags on these trucks I’ve learned that CNY has an abundance of small towns I’ve never heard of and most likely will never visit. I might make an exception for Callicoon now that I know they have this truck.

Parked next door was a seemingly new truck for the Oswego County Highway Department. They made for a handsome couple.

In the gallery below you’ll find a few more of the two trucks pictured above as well as a pretreat truck for Onondaga County DOT, a recent trade in from the town of Gilboa, NY and a 114SD from the Town of Stratford, NY.

Still Working – Ford F600

A few weeks ago Dave braved the blizzard of 2016 to grab these shots of a hard working F-600 dump truck used to plow a mall parking lot near King of Prussia, PA. This truck is a true blast from the past from the rotating beacon up top to the spoke wheels all the way around.

Thanks to Dave for taking these shots after a long weekend of plowing!

Autocar Mondays – The Final Tow

We’ve got another mystery truck today for Autocar Mondays. Jeremy came across this nice looking rig at Kenneth’s Fine Repairs. Sometimes it’s best to use your imagination and make up the backstory to this truck yourself. Just like you used to do when you were a kid in the sandbox. In my version of events this truck has a V12 Detroit, front winch bumpers, 750 Holmes wrecker, 6×6 traction, some form of intense low range gearbox. It once was used by NASA to pull the shuttle crawler when it broke down. It was one of a dozen trucks that would hook up the crawler and pull in unison. So, what is your story?

Concrete Pumpers

Sometimes you need to pump concrete from the ground floor to the top floor. You could put it in buckets and use the stars or you could pump it. Pumper trucks were everywhere at World of Concrete and it looks like Ryan didn’t miss a single one!

Vegas has all the best shows! Once again, thanks Ryan!

Future Garbage Trucks

Everybody starts somewhere. The same goes for trucks. Garbage trucks come from a variety of places with a few coming from Hackers Packers in Harpursville, NY. Jeremy swang by there recently and found a few bare frames waiting for their new refuse bodies. Macks have always been a great starting point for any garbage truck with Peterbilts becoming more popular in recent years.

Check out this Pink International PayStar. Factory color!

Of course for every new truck coming to the world one must leave. In the gallery below a few random old rigs plus another shot of the Pete. Thanks for sharing Jeremy!

Everyday Big Rigs

I’ve often wondered, sometimes on this site, if I’m doing myself and future truck fans a disservice but not taking photographs of the trucks gracing our roads. I’ll admit that most are pretty bland and unremarkable with a lack of nameplate variety but that isn’t to say that you cant find  a few lookers out there. I liked the looks of this Laidlaw International ProStar parked at a rest stop along the thruway. Tribal strips and lines down the trailer. It sure stands out in a world of white Walmart Freightliners.

Laidlaw International Prostar

Speaking of Freightliners, this Roehl midroof Cascadia had its own charm.

And speaking of charm, patriotic charm that is, a Werner Peterbilt providing dedicated services for Family Dollar.

Maybe my eyes have been opened to a whole new class of trucks?
