Autocar Mondays – Autocar ACL 64B

The first true snow storm in the area always brings the media out in great numbers. News crews descend on local DPW garages to film footage of trucks loading up on salt while photographers seek out that quintessential storm photo. Jeffery alerted me to one such photo from the Oneida Daily Dispatch as they covered the “snow event” that struck upstate New York a few short weeks ago. The truck in question happens to be his 2000 Autocar ACL 64B powered by a N14 435 H.P. Cummins connected to the traditional Eaton-Fuller 8LL transmission. When not plowing in the winter Jeffery and his Autocar haul blacktop to the paving crews of the Madison County Highway Department. A truly fine looking machine captured in time doing what it does best. Thanks for the tip Jeffery!

Komatsu PC300LC Excavator

Today I’m dusting off another video from the early spring that never made in to the limelight. While this particular video is new, the machine featured had spent some time on this website before. Remember that Komatsu PC300LC of Economy Paving? Yeah you do. We all chuckled when it dropped that huge slab of concrete right next to the bossmans’ truck. At this stage of the game Erie Blvd had yet to be reduced to a large trench in order to repair the century old stone work running beneath the street. In this particular video the top level of pavement has been stripped and is being loaded into a dump truck. Usually the dump truck driver waits until the excavator operator signals the truck is fully loaded. A beep of the horn is the typical method of communication. In this case the driver decided he was full enough and pulled off when the Komatsu had its back turned. He was completely down the street and out of site before anyone was the wiser. Sneaky Pete.

Western Stars of Distinction

I came across these two Western Stars months ago. Like other trucks in the past they were lost in the shuffle and confusion of the warmer months that are filled with truck shows and other content rich events. Now that the winter freeze is setting in I can slow down and share a few gems that have been overlooked.

This Western Star 4900 of Associated Industrial Riggers is a fine looking machine. Well appointed with lights and chrome of every kind and sharp green paint job. While making this post I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had already shared this truck so I did some digging and discovered that while this truck is new to DDD a near twin of this truck can be found in the employ of ERSI. Take a look at this old post and see how close the two trucks are to each other. I guess this kind of thing happens when both businesses reside just minutes away from the local Western Star dealer.

Western Star 4900 Truck

A little older on the Star spectrum is this truck for an utility contractor by a name that I no longer remember. Their yard was full of cool stuff like 4×4 bucket trucks and off road tracked cranes. The fading summer sun was in the wrong spot to grab any decent photos but take my world for it, you would have loved what they had.

Swords to Plowshares

There has been no snow this week so there will be no snow plow action photos. Thankfully I have a stock pile of still shots from random dealers, parking lots and repair facilities. This fancy looking WorkStar for the Syracuse International Airport was at the local Freightliner dealer a few weeks back. Later it could be seen without it’s box so I suppose some sort of repair or upgrade was taking place.

The Western Star infiltration of the NYS Thruway continues in full force.

Speaking of Western Stars here is a sharp looking one from the Town of Clay, NY. Have we see this truck before? Magica 8 Ball answer: Yes Definitely.

In the gallery below we have a pair of International 2574’s of the NYSTA. They were in line with the new Western Stars seen above. Are they being replaced? Magic 8 Ball says: Most Likely. Next is a brand new Freightliner 114SD with complete Henderson setup. Also, two more Western Stars, I believe the first truck is from the Town of Eaton while the second is from the Town of Augusta. It’s difficult to see in the photo but the Augusta truck has a nice pastoral scene painted for the town shield complete with deer, tree and plow truck. Completing the collection is a International 4700 with the Town of Dewitt.

Still Working – International Loadstar 1600

My dad snapped these shots of a International Loadstar 1600 a few weeks ago behind a car dealer in Auburn, NY. Shortly after that I stumbled upon this truck for sale on Craigslist. Like the last Loadstar we saw this truck is also V-8 gas powered but comes with a 12 foot plow. Everything looks fairly clean and straight on this old truck minus the missing headlight but don’t worry it can be found inside the cab.

International Loadstar 1600 Snow Plow

The current owner is asking $3,800 which is close to a fair price if everything works as advertised.

International Loadstar Dump Truck

If the truck had a diesel you surely could ask for more cash.

Check out that old Henderson logo. Neat. If you’re interested in this old rig click here to view the listing.

Autocar Mondays – Passing of the Torch

When I first spotted the new Western Star 4700 for Syracuse Haulers two thoughts crossed my mine. First, wow that is a nice truck. Second, I hope they don’t get rid of the Autocar. While I have no proof that the Western Star led to the sad news I am about to share the conclusion is one that I don’t consider to be a leap. A new truck comes into the world, an old one must leave.  It is the nature of things. Yes, the Autocar for Syracuse Haulers is up for sale.

This Autocar and Daily Diesel Dose go way back. It was the first Autocar featured on this site and the first truck featured in the Still Working category.

Autocar Roll Off

While browsing through Craigslist the other day I just happened to stumble across the second posting of this truck. It’s been for sale since at least November 14th of this year. Thanks to the listing we know this truck is a 1984 with a 400HP Cummins 855 complete with a Jake. Hosting power is brought to you by a 60K pound Galbreath

The selling price has not been provided but if you’re interested you can visit the original ad by clicking here. If only I had been saving my pennies maybe I could have been the new owner. As nice as the new Star is it will never be as cool as old 52. Here’s hoping she goes to a good home.

Obscured Vision

It’s not always possible to get the perfect sight line when taking photos of trucks and heavy equipment. As we’ve seen time and time again most of these machines are stuck behind fences or tucked away at far ends of constructions sites. Just because I can only get one limited shot doesn’t mean the subject isn’t worth discussing. In fact the limited angle can be more intriguing and cause the eye to be more discerning in the search for facts. Check out this scene from the back forty of the Dewitt Highway Department.

Plenty of cool artifacts to stare at in this photo. The ex military loader is particularly interesting. It doesn’t look like a typical loader front end loader so maybe it was a forklift? Very hard to tell. One of the two road graders is sporting blue rims suggesting that it may have been NYSDOT surplus. Despite these three interesting machines dominating the forefront of the image I’m most intrigued by the the outline of a massive snow thrower lurking near the weeds. The Birds Eye View on Bing Maps confirms the basic shape but gives no idea at make, model or age. The mystery continues.

You don’t see too may of these Dresser Pay Loaders around anymore. This one is stuck near the back of the Carrier factory and is possibly used as snow machine. At one point inaccessible behind razor wire access recently became available due to the construction of a new public park. Dresser was the successor of the International Harvester brand of heavy construction equipment. Later Dresser would partner with Komatsu and many years later reemerge as Dressta.

Dresser Payloader

We’ll wrap up today with another rear end shot of a classic loader in the form of this Caterpillar Euclid/Terex. I’m unsure of the model or year but I’m guessing late 70’s. This machine is operated by Luber Homes, the owner of a veritable treasure trove of vintage iron. Click here to remember and recall.

Euclid or Terex Payloader

Update: Thanks to Jason for pointing out the loader is most likely a Euclid or Terex and not a Caterpillar. Thanks to a repaint this loader is a tricky one to identify except to the most discerning of eyes.

Update 2:

The graders have hit the Auctions International website thus revealing their true identities. The grader directly behind the wheel loader is a 1957 Austin-Westin. Detroit powered, broken rear axle, ran when parked eight years ago. The second is a 1968 Wabco. Also Detroit powered, ran when parked 15 years ago. Interesting that the oldest unit was the one most recently on the road.

No word on what happened to the military forklift.

Peterbilt Semi Trucks

I didn’t really think Ryan was holding out on me when it came to photos from the 75th Anniversary Peterbilt truck show but he was! He was trying to keep this long nose from the world.

Snowplow Stalking 2015 Season

Usually walking around in freezing temperatures with precipitation falling from the sky places me in a foul mood but add the prospect of seeing some snow plow action and suddenly I gain the ability to stay outside for hours. Funny how that works. Anyway, some foolishly named weather system passed through the area yesterday dropping a decent amount of snow right in the middle of the day. At lunch I took to the streets hoping to catch the action. Right out of the gate I was greeted with an International Paystar5000 4×4. As usual a econobox Honda (always a Honda!) conspired to force my hand and tried to block my shot. My back up shot turned out okay but it wasn’t what I wanted.

International Paystar Snowplow

I began to wander the nearby blocks in a grid pattern hoping to cross paths with the numerous plows I kept seeing in the distance. I figured they would take a similar approach to plowing. No such luck. It appears each driver does their own thing. Picking and choosing what streets to plow completely at random. I’m sure there is a process but I haven’t deciphered the code….yet.

Up next was this International WorkStar. Unlike the rest of the trucks I would see later in the day this one provided me with ample time for a decent shot.

International WorkStar Snow Plow

Do you remember my white whale from last season in the form of an International 2574 Marmon-Herrington 4×4? It showed up again yesterday and yet again it escaped without providing a decent footage. My camera behaves like I’m trying to shoot Bigfoot or a UFO around this truck. The photos always come out fuzzy. Truthfully I didn’t have enough time to focus correctly due to the falling snow. If you really want to get nit picky I believe the city has two of these truck so I’m not even sure which one I haven’t been able to grab these past two years. Either way this was the end result. Look at the beautiful snowflakes with a defocused plow. So artistic!

DSC07818 (1024x613)

Later, I saw the newer single axle 4×4 International WorkStar and new tandem axle WorkStar with Henderson body blasting through nearby intersections. I was starting to get frustrated with being in the wrong place at the wrong time when my original truck, the Paystar, returned. This time a sure footed Dodge Dakota blasted into the frame at the last second. *rage face*

International Paystar5000 Snow Plow

Fumbling around I switched to video and was able to pull out a decent save.

I declare the 2015 snowplow stalking season to be open!
