Euclid S7 Scraper

Brace yourselves, the rest of the week around here is going to be loaded down with vintage heavy equipment. As I mentioned before, this past weekend was the national meet for the Historical Construction Equipment Association in Canandaigua, NY. The event happened coincided with the annual Pageant of Steam so there was more than enough to watch, photograph, and enjoy.

One of the first pieces of equipment I noticed was this 1954 Euclid S7 scraper. Powered by a 4-71 Detroit Diesel attached to a 5 speed manual Clark transmission this green machine has a 7 yard capacity.

You might be wondering why the operator is destroying a perfectly good grass covered parking lot with the Euc. I know I thought the same thing. At first glance it would appear that a free-for-all was taking place with HCEA members digging, pushing and dumping soil wherever they please but it turns out a perimeter road of crush stone was being constructed over the three day event. What you watched in the video above was the start of the final segment. Later we’ll seen dump trucks dropping gravel and dozers spreading it out.

Euclid S7 Scraper

A little googling discovered a video with the operator of this machine talking about the reasons why he enjoys the S7 so much. Click here to watch.

Tomorrow we take a look at some vintage heavy iron bulldozers. The Cat D9 and the International TD-24!

Autocar Mondays – Town of Clay, NY

I was probably a little more excited to see this truck than I should have been. I mean, after all it’s just an Autocar right? Wrong! It’s an Autocar Contrucktor which means it comes from the unspoiled age of the company. The age before the White/GMC/Volvo mess. The pictures tell the story of this well maintained truck. Regular maintenance can really work miracles when you realize this rig has been working the salt encrusted roads of NYS for more than three decades.

Autocar Construcktor

This truck comes to us from the town of Clay, NY stable of snow fighters. Once upon a time they ran a fairly large sized fleet of Construcktors including this VAC truck. Last summer they sold what I assumed was their last A-Car when this 1978 model crossed the auction block. I supposed I should get off my lazy butt and make the 15 minute cruise to their garage and see what is left!

2014 National Brockway Truck Show

Somedays you are at the top of your game. Other days you are not. Yesterday was one of those days were I was scraping the bottom of the barrel just to get buy. You see I had grand plans to visit both the national Brockway Show in Cortland, NY and the national Historical Construction Equipment Association meet in a Canandaigua. Being the young go-getter that I am I was confident that I had the plan and equipment to make it work. I would stop by Cortland first thing in the morning to catch the parade of trucks from the Brockway Muesum to their display location on downtown main street. I was going to bring my usual camera with spare battery as well as dedicated video recorder. I woke up early on Saturday morning and began to assemble my gear only to find that the spare battery was not where I left it. I looked everywhere but it was gone. Oh well, the video camera would help me stretch my recording power I optimistically told myself. I went into the basement to find the tripod but found only the tripod’s empty box. Scouring of the house finally turned up the missing device and allowed me to finally hit the road. Making good time to Cortland I found a nice spot near the museum and setup my camera. I powered up the video camera and checked the battery meter. A whopping 11 minutes of estimated time greeted my face.

lolwut

Literally, that’s what I did. I laughed and then said what, over and over. I had fully charged the camera over two days ago and never used it. In my ignorance I had closed the view finder but neglected to hit the off button. The camcorder sat there in ready state for two days happily draining the battery. By 8:30 I was already down a battery and recording device without shooting a single photo! I had to make the difficult decision to record what I could of the parade and save the rest of my capacity for the HECA event. It’s lonely at the top when you have to make these kinds of decisions. At the end of it all I managed to grab about 5 minutes of Brockways prowling the streets and a few photos. Hopefully my redemption will come from the Canandaigua footage.

Ready in the Rain

I was in Rome two weeks ago when I stopped to have lunch near Northern Industries Rome ready mix plant. A few rigs were parked out back on this very rainy day while others came and went. Some appeared to park for the day while others headed for the dry bays of the service department.

Allis Chalmers HD21 Dozer

Just like a shark cruising the beach line a 30 ton bulldozer can sneak up you. I know it sounds silly but such was the case with this behemoth Allis Chalmers HD21 dozer. People coming across this iron lump were often heard muttering excited utterances like “holy s@*t” or “oh my God.” Clearly this is divine heavy equipment.

14668951660_236cb31918_b

There were so many details about this dozer I wanted to capture that video was the only option. You’ll notice the steady stream of people milling around the machine. Many climbed onto the seat and mulled over starting it up but most were not that brave or foolish. I don’t think anyone had a clue of how to get it running. There was a small stack that ran from the operator controls directly to the engine. A large quantity of starter fluid cans were found in this area leading me to believe this was a factory option for starting the massive inline six turbo diesel. As you can see someone installed a new exhaust tip not too long ago. Turn key? LOL. Even to a novice like me there were plenty of problems to be spotted on this old machine. The blade cylinders were leaking all over the tracks and the cylinders the run from the push beam to the back of the blade were completely sheared off.

But who cares about that. This thing was cool. Have you ever seen such a mean looking attachment as the Zor Plow? It would make He-Man jealous. Basic research pegs this device as used to provide drainage for farm fields and to lay cable/pipe at depths of up to six feet. Based on some of the other equipment on this dozer I’m thinking it was used for both activities. Logos on the side indicate this AC hails from Fiat-Allis era which puts the production age of the machine around 1975.

Here is a video of a HD21 running.

BTW, This was seen at the Empire Farm Days equipment auction outside Seneca Falls, NY.

Tractor Pulling

I almost forgot about these “tractors” that were at the Broome County Fair a few weeks ago. They hail from the super stock class of tractors which according to the info on the NYTPA website can include a few different setups.

14661916610_75a367fb2c_b

Code Red is an International 1066 and is listed as Pro Stock tractor. Regulations dictate tractors in the class run on diesel only and have a displacement of 680 cubic inches. Turbo size is unlimited as long you only run one. Little More Patience on the other hand has three turbos jammed under the hood. Whoa. I really thinking they should attach a wagon to the rear and give the most awesome haunted hayrides ever.

Lost and Found – A Little Bit of Everything

Nate sent me these great photos the other day of some trucks he stumbled upon during his travels. The gallery below contains a little bit of everything. Check out this well worn Kenworth K-100 with mean looking spoke wheels. From the photos this truck seems solid enough to save which is exactly what Nate hopes to accomplish.

Kenworth K100

In the gallery there is also an International Transtar 4300 wearing various tags and stickers from the 80’s which might provide a clue to when it was last on the road. It currently resting with a dump trailer. Nearby is an International R-200 dump truck as well with fenders (at least one) that appear very straight and solid which is a rarity for trucks of this age. Out of all the classics in the gallery the the 50’s Autocar appears to be in the poorest of shape.

Thanks Nate for the great addition to the Lost and Found archives.

Bulldog Generations

I came across this pair of bulldogs a few weeks ago and thought it was an interesting shot. The old Mack DM on the left may not have the creature comforts of the Granite but it’s still working. We saw this Gabes Trucking rig at a few jobs sites last year.

Mack Dump Trucks

Both trucks were helping to pave over the recently filled crater that once was Erie Blvd West. Just one week prior the street was still open and the home to this Cat loader shuttling concrete pipes around.

It seems like just yesterday this project in full swing. Summer just seems to be slipping away.

Autocar Mondays – An Autocar In Progress

Maybe you noticed this truck in the gallery of ESATA coverage from yesterday. I know this was one of the first trucks to catch my eye at the show. The frame has been stretched to include room for the tandem axles (White logo stamped on the housing) with new bunk boards waiting for installation. This Autocar includes one of my favorite classic truck features, the stack flapper! The video below begins with generous coverage of this fine device.
