Hess Trucks

We are approaching that magic time of the year where the Hess Truck commercials invade the airwaves of your TV and the brains of your small children. For those of you not familar with Hess Trucks take a look at the video below.

Good luck getting that song out of your head! Every Christmas the truck changes as does the jingle that the happy children of the official Hess choir so gleefully sing. As a child it just wasn’t Christmas if there wasn’t a Hess Truck under the tree. There was never much debate with me regarding keeping the truck as collectible or tearing it out of the box as soon as the wrapping paper was removed. I know there a lot of people out there hoard these trucks in the hope that one day they will be worth a small fortune. Honestly, I just don’t see that taking place. Maybe the original series that started off the tradition will command a decent price but any of the later models should be left to the devices of your children. Letting them play with the trucks will see a greater return on your investment than by shoving them in a dark corner of your basement. Alternatively you could always buy two!

Here is my fleet after a few decades of use. As a kid I loved the light up features on these trucks. Not much has changed as an adult.

DSC04438

This trip down memory lane is brought to you by an actual, honest to goodness, real life Hess truck that I spotted the other day at a repair shop.

Hess Snow Plow

Seeing this truck caused a question to rise in my brain. Does Hess still run a private fleet? I remember seeing trucks like this Freightliner FLD and Volvos on the road all the time but they seem to have disappeared in recent years. A few mintues on Google lead to a disturbing answer. Hess announced in March of 2013 that they plan to sell the portion of their company responsible for refining and selling gasoline. Following the sale Hess will be solely a petroleum exploration and research company. Retail operations and storage facilities will be sold. What this means for the Hess truck remains to be seen but it doesn’t look good. After all, if you no longer have Hess gas stations where do you sell Hess trucks! Maybe someone will buy the name rights and continue the tradition. I may want to reconsider my previous statement on the value of the modern collectible lineup.

As you can see from the photo and gallery below this truck wears the location of local Hess tank farm. No doubt this Freightliner was at one time an OTR truck now serving a second life as a plow. It still wears NJ plates, the home state of Hess. I’m glad I doubled back to photograph this truck as it soon to be collectible itself!

*UPDATE*

I have been in contact with representatives of Hess who have assured me that the Hess Toy Truck line will continue despite the operational changes at the retail store level. Hessโ€™ long-standing commitment to competitive prices and high quality customer service to customers will not change. In other words, business as usual. Stay tuned for more!

2013 ATHS Hudson Mohawk – The Road to the Show

I’m always on the look out for interesting trucks not matter the age or condition. My route home from the ATHS Hudson Mohawk show in Ballston Spa brings me right by a few locations that always seem to more than a few trucks that fit the bill.

A truck stop along State Route 67 had two vintage IHC trucks that would have been right at home at any show. As I passed by this very original and very solid KB-6 I fully expected to see it later in the day at the fairgrounds.

Right behind the KB was an equally nice Loadstar 1890 dump truck. I love finding wonderful survivor trucks like these two Internationals.

One other vehicle of note was this International PayStar5000. It was parked by one of the large and ominous looking abandoned textile mills that dot the city of Amsterdam, NY. Plenty of diamond plate on this one.

Funny how they all happened to be Internationals but that is how the cookie crumbles. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Autocar Mondays – Autocar AT64

Last week the focus of Autocar Mondays was a pair of DC model rigs at work in the slate quarries of Vermont. Today we move toward one of the final models to wear the Autocar badge before Volvo muddied the waters with their purchase of the storied brand, yes we are talking about the AT64. In semi tractor form and with the right options you can be forgiven for taking a quick glimpse at an AT and writing it off as a Peterbilt. Hard to believe but it happens. Even your humble webmaster has been caught by this under the radar rig.

Two weeks ago I came across this particular Autocar working in tandem with a very active cold planer. A long line of trucks were lined up on the street waiting for the chance to be loaded but only one rig caught my eye and this time I didn’t think it was just another Petercar.

Killian Construction and Barrett Paving were tasked to strip and repave just over one mile of a busy two lane street leading into the heart of Syracuse. As one truck left another arrived and joined the feeding line.

Bonus Truck and Video!

Also on the job was an old International S-Series. We all know I am a sucker for this model truck so here it is, blue smoke and all.

Back on the subject of Autocars here is my first sighting of the AT64. This video provides you with a better idea of how this truck sounds.

The Western Report – Going Big

I received an email from Ryan the other day that asked the question of how to move a large rock crusher. The answer will be crystal clear when you look at the photos below.

You can do this too with a super long Cozad lowboy! The Peterbilt is operated by Sierra Rental and Transportย a company that specializes in the heavy and unusual loads. Stop by their site to check out more of what they do.

Snow Plow Dump Off

It has been a busy couple of weeks around here regarding old truck photos and videos. During that time I’ve continued to stumble across the old stand by of this site, snow plows! Like it or not the white stuff is just around the corner so I’ve had good luck find plenty of rigs at the local repair shops and dealers getting ready for the season. The time has come to unload some of these photos before I fall too far behind.

If you attended the Tracey Road Equipment open house this past Wednesday this Western Star may seem familiar.

Also in the gallery below is pair of Mack Granites for an unknown agency, a few trucks from local municipalities and a plow for the Syracuse International Airport.

White 3000 – Game Over

Sad news to report today. The White 3000 asphalt tanker that was the first Lost and Found feature on this website is no more…or soon will be no more. Despite hiding behind a hill of scrub brush and road tailings the White’s cover was blown when a new access road to a CSX rail yard was created last month in response the devastating fire at Syracuse Recycling. Months after the fire was extinguished it continues to claim victims.

I’ve been watching the progress of the new access road and was hoping it would bypass the White. For a time it looked like the truck would live to rust another day but then yesterday I noticed a hulking mass of brown metal appear from the trees. I knew right away what had happened. A closer inspection revealed the cab to be completely destroyed. Most likely by the unforgiving bucket of excavator. A summary execution if there ever was one.

Sad…sad….sad…but if you can’t save them…photograph/video them!

Little is know about the past life of this truck. I couldn’t find any decals during my visit that would indicate what paving company used to operate this truck. The popular guess is some incarnation of Penn Can Road Materials. On the topic of PCRM their old terminal near they NYS Fair grounds was recently leveled. Tough week for the construction history of CNY! In some form the White will live on through this website and the oracle of knowledge that is YouTube. I would be really kicking myself if I hadn’t stopped a little less than a year ago to video tape this truck before the long arm of the scrap man found it. You just never know when that old truck you pass by everyday will be gone.

So long White 3000. We hardly knew you.

Fire Truck Exposition

Zack shares with us a few more pictures from his excellent website dedicated to the photography of fire trucks and other rescue vehicles. I like the variety of equipment covered in the latest selection. Command vehicles, brush trucks, vintage pumpers, just a little bit of everything. I’m partial to the massive West Redding Mack tanker and the Washington International Engine 3 myself. What about you?

Once again thank you for you the great shots Zack!

Autocar Mondays – Slate Trucks

I love it when a submission can cover three different segments of this website. To start, we have Autocars for Autocar Mondays. Next, we have one truck that can fall into the Lost & Found category while the other clearly is in the Still Working class. Forget killing two birds with one stone we just got three!

For some time now Clarence has told me about a slate quarry in Vermont that runs a wide variety of old equipment for their in pit operations. Older Macks and Autocars like the one below make a good portion of the fleet.

Put a few pounds of air in the tire and you’ll be good to go. ๐Ÿ˜‰

BONUS TRUCK!

Now, this is not an Autocar but that doesn’t mean it is any less of truck. This Euclid R50 is packing a Detroit 16V71 under the hood. Whoooooaaaa. Talk about a monster! I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If I ever win the lotto I’m buying something like this Euclid. Forget the Ferrari go Euc!

Big thanks to Clarence!

On the Job – Bur-Trans

A pair of sharp looking Mack Visions today brought to you by Dan. These two belong to Bur-Trans of Moravia, NY. On this particular day the Macks were busy hauling loads to a composite site.

Can’t you smell that smell? The smell of it around you?

Back to the Front

You know what they say about cabover trucks? When you drive one you are the first to arrive at the accident scene. *Rim Shot*

More entertaining photos today from Rick and his archive of crane and other heavy haul moves. Can you believe I sat on these photos for over a week?

Once again, a huge thank you to Rick!
