Unsafe Lane Change

Around the City of Syracuse there are many old rail road bridges.  Some a very low and have the habit of snaring the unsuspecting truck driver.  Bridge and truck crashes are so common that the local news media barely bothers to report them anymore.  But it’s not every day that a semi takes the plunge off an elevated portion of the Interstate and onto the local streets below.

Reports have this 2004 Freightliner as traveling north on Interstate 81 on the way to Toronto, Canada.  While attempting to make a lane change the driver lost control of the truck and hit a bridge abutment causing the cab to separate from the frame and land on the streets below.  Hours after the accident the engine and front axle could still be seen dangling from the elevated highway.  Thankfully, the driver and his passenger escaped with only minor injuries.   The driver was issued a citation for an unsafe lane change.

Vintage Words – GM Diesels

Top Daily Diesel Dose contributor Marc, just sent me a huge collection of vintage advertisements that I can now begin to share with you.  To start, we have this ad for GM Diesels, aka, Detroit Diesel.

Much like the Million Dollar Man, a Series 53 and 71 engine can be rebuilt and actually be better than it was from the factory, as the fine print reads, engine obsolescence has been put to an end.  Of course the world has changed over the years.  Increasing fuel prices and government mandated regulations regarding emissions have changed the core designs of many engines.  Unfortunately, simplicity and reliability are no longer the key selling points.

Thanks again Marc!

A world without trucks….

A world without trucks, sounds like the scariest movie premise ever.  CDL Life.com published this infogram the other day to highlight the dependence our modern world has on the every day work truck.  Interesting stuff.

Right off the Block

I caught this older Autocar working on the same sewer project as the Ford LTL 9000 from last week.  The number on the windshield makes it appear the truck just came from the auction block.

I couldn’t make out the faded seal on the door but this is definitely a former municipal unit.  To the best of my eyesight it appeared to read “XXXXX County Highway Commission”.  Construction fenders FTW.

*UPDATE 7/26/2012* I stopped by this construction site again and this truck was once again on the job.  I was able to get a closer look, it appears to read Erie County Highway Division.

The Unmarked Tow Truck

I took a walk during lunch the other day hoping to find a truck or two that would be interesting for this site.  After nearly 60 minutes of wandering all over town I had nothing. The streets were empty of anything remotely interesting.  If I found UPS trucks to be interesting I would have been in heaven.  With only minutes left for lunch I was facing the prospect of heading back to the office with any empty camera.   Suddenly, the Interstates parted and this bright orange International 7600 wrecker rolled down the street.  The truck may be unmarked but I happen to know it belongs to CENTRO, the regional bus authority.  Just like the buses it rescues, this truck saved the day for the triple D.

Pilot Travel Centers

Adding to the growing “On the Job” category I bring you this Peterbilt fuel tank for Pilot Travel Centers.  Always interesting to see a company run truck for gas stations these days, most work is farmed out to private haulers.

The Easy Way

Would you rather move drywall up the stairs four stories or pass it through a window? I bet the workers on this job would have a clear answer. This International Paystar belongs to Gypsum Express, a local company that also hauls for the nearby Anheuser Busch plant. According to their website Gypsum Express is also the owner of this sweet Paystar tow truck from a few months back.  Knowledge is power!

And the winner is…

Last year the Cat CT660 hit the trucking scene in a big way. After all, it’s not everyday that a new truck hits the market by a company more adapt at building bulldozers. As part of the CT660 marketing blitz Cat ran a contest in which they promised to award a brand new truck to one lucky driver. All you had to do was submit a video outlining your need for the massive rig. I promoted this story last July and then promptly forgot all about it. Thankfully, Cat was more on the ball. Ladies and Gentelmen, you winner, Coley Mulkern and LPA Marine of Peaks Island, Maine!

NYSW Units 3014 and 3016

Once again our old friend chain link fence returns to mar an otherwise nice photo. The trains below are EMD SD40T-2’s built in 1978. They belong to the New York Susquahanna & Western railroad and were sitting on the elevated tracks that cut through downtown Syracuse on the outskirts of Armory Square. The amount of information available online about these trains is simply mind blowing. Just typing the train number into Google brought me to websites with literally hundreds of photos of each locomotive. Clearly train spotters are the most rabid of any hobbyist group!

Random Wikipedia Facts.

  • 312 SD40T-2 were manufactured between 1974 and 1980
  • Power provided by a 16 Cylinder diesel capable of 3,000 HP
  • SD40T-2 are commonly referred to as “tunnel motors” as they were designed to operate efficiently in tunnels
  • Unit 3014 has “snoot” nose for radio control equipment
  • At one point Southern Pacific (later Union Pacific) owned every SD40T-2
