Onondaga County DOT Western Star

As far as municipal plow trucks go this Western Star 4900 is a pretty sharp unit with clean looking black steel wheels wearing custom lug covers upfront.  At the rear you have aluminum rims on the tandems with a Henderson dump bed complete with liquid ice control system.  I’m might be partial to the old International S-Series and Paystars but this   is one good looking rig.

Still Working – Freightliner FLC

Nothing like catching a working truck in its natural environment.  For instance, this mud covered and battle scarred Freightliner FLC of Clark Concrete.  How about that split windshield?  Vintage.  The exhaust stack even has a flapper.

Snapple To The Rescue

This state of the art mobile thirst quench unit is capable of pumping 1500 gallons of Raspberry Snapple per minute.  An on board 500 gallon aluminium tank provides a portable sources of Lemon Snapple for those rural thirst emergencies.  Sorry, this truck is not peach flavor capable because peach flavor is just nasty.  With minor upgrades a Diet Snapple foam sprayer can be configured for those late night rave parties.

Altec Hybrid

For years now power companies have compelled consumers to save energy with behavior modifying rebates on items like programmable thermostats, air sealing, and insulation.  Most utilities will even allow you to purchase energy generated from renewable resources.  Like the old saying goes, practice what your preach.  This NYSEG Freightliner M2 is a good example.  It contains a Altec hybrid lift which does not require the truck to run when using the bucket thus reducing emissions and fuel consumption.  The body of the bucket unit is made of aluminum and other composite material to reduce weight which again reduces energy consumed.

At the Dealer – Stadium International

I stopped by Stadium International a few weeks ago and grabbed shots of the trucks you see below.  As fate would have it I was the lime green Prostar was in for service.  Just a few days earlier it was behind me in traffic on the commute home from work.  I remember thinking “Gee, that would be a nice truck to have a picture off.”….

And here we have a Workstar, just a run of the mill average medium duty dump truck.

Drawn from England, Scotland, Canada, USA, Sri Lanka and Australia, they are challenged to navigate the most extreme routes across four continents. Each journey will last three days, and they must contend with unusual cargo, massive rigs, lethal roads and each other. Along the way, the weak will be eliminated and only one will walk away with the £100,000 prize and the title of World’s Toughest Trucker

EGR or SCR? The Choice is Yours!

Trucks Producing NOx

Just the other day we learned that International was running out of EPA credits for its heavy duty motors which could potentially lead to a ban of their sales in certain states.  That news followed on the heals of a U.S. District court ruling that ended Navistars lawsuit of the EPA and their stance on SCR technology.  So what is the big deal?  What is ECR and SCR?  What does it all mean?  I’m glad you asked.  Here is my laymans take on the technology.

SCR stands for selective catalytic reduction.  It is the primary method used today in both Europe and the Unites States for the reduction of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) which is the primary pollutant produced by diesel engines.  Trucks running a SCR system contain a small tank used to store diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) which is mixture of water and urea.  Through a complex process of sorcery, DEF is passed over a catalyst which transforms NOx into nitrogen gas and water vapor.  As I mentioned before every truck manufacturer uses SCR except one.  Why is that?  The opponents of SCR highlight the complexity of the system citing the tanks for DEF, complex wiring, pipes and computers controls.  Drivers must be trained to check and fill the DEF tanks which contain urea, this point is OFTEN highlighted. They really want you to make the connection between urea and urine. It maybe childish but that is marketing.  DEF also begins to “slushify” around 12F.  And finally attempting to to run a SCR engine without DEF will result in reduced performance, basically just enough engine power to limp along the shoulder.

What about ECR, AKA, exhaust gas recirculation. This is the method used by International in all their trucks and engine platforms.  Instead of using fluid to transform or trap NOx, cooled diesel exhaust is recirculated through the engine which results in the complete destruction of the desired particulates.  Opponents of ECR point to lower fuel economy and questionable pollution control results. Others claim the engines simply do not work and spend more time in the shop than on the road.

Just like anything in life there a pros and cons to each system.  From the outside EGR offers the least amount of change for owners and drivers alike while SCR is a proven technology (as far as Europe is concerned) and appears to be the golden boy of the EPA and other regulatory bodies.  Even though the EPA set standards for 2010 I don’t believe this issue has come to conclusion yet as truck buyers raced to stockpile premission trucks a few years back while truck builders continue to use engine credits and other loopholes to make “dirty” engines. Check out some of the videos below for all the details and some fancy truck related graphics.  Knowledge is power!

2011 Truck Sales Boom

2011 was a great year to be a truck manufacturer. The industry as a whole saw a nearly 60% increase in sales over the prior year. Although each OEM was able to move more units Volvo and Peterbilt were the percentages winners with increases of 108% and 89% respectively. Following on the heals of the good news above one manufacturer was dealt a potential dangerous regulatory blow. Yesterday it was announced that Navistar’s lawsuit to force an EPA recall of 2010 diesel engines using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) was dismissed from a U.S. district court. Navistar is the only company that does not use SCR as emission reduction and control device instead using exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). To make matters worse the the company is running out of engine credits that allow it to sell non compliant engines. Credits for California sales are expected to be depleted by the end of next month. Navistar stock piled credits back when their engines exceed Federal standards. Company officials announced they are close to unveiling a new EGR based engine that will meet all current EPA standards.

Road Gators, Scourge of the Interstates

Road gators, AKA the large chunks of rubber left on the road after a semi truck blows a tire.  Just like their natural born namesakes they can be extremely dangerous.  If you’ve ever had to swerve to avoid a shredded tire or worse yet, hit one, you know what I mean.  DOT crews usually try to clean the fragments as soon as possible but this usually requires lane closures with two or three trucks and crews working along high speed traffic.  Enter the Gator Getter.  A large drum looking device attached to the front of your standard dump truck.  Moving at high speed and from their safety of their cab a DOT crew can remove road obstacles in seconds flat.

Gotta say, this looks like fun.
