Raise Your Dumpers

Old trucks never die. Wouldn’t that be a nice world? A crowded world but a nice world nonetheless. Two years ago I brought you a few shots of this Diamond Reo Giant residing at a local topsoil business. At the time it wasn’t for sale but it is now! The asking price is $9,500 which is a nice chunk of change for a grizzled veteran like this Giant. For that cool stack of cash you get a 20k front axle, 46k rears, a gold standard 8LL trans and a Big Cam Cummins 300. Despite the haggard appearance I’m feeling that this Reo has some life left in all the important places. Obviously the seller is touting the strength of the hydraulics but leaving the bed up. The biggest outward flaw that I notice is the bondo job done around the top of the windshield. Diamond Reo used the White/Autocar corporate cab for a number of years and if you know anything about that style of cab you know that they love to rust out right near the top. You can visit the Craigslist add here.

Diamond Reo Giant

Parked next door was this 1988 International S-2600. The Craigstlist add for this truck tells us the asking price is $9,000 despite the window sticker proclaiming $8,500. The truck is already saving you money! Specs for this ‘Binder included a double frame, 20k front axle, 44k rear axle, Hendrickson suspension, 350 small cam Cummins with jake and 15 speed overdrive trans.. The flapper on the stack has me sold.

Some of you might be wondering about the Mack truck that was seen in the 2013 post. Well, it’s for sale as well, click here to visit the ad. Gold Bulldog. Need I say more!

Cat CT680

The latest addition to the growing on highway Cat Trucks family was revealed the other day. Say hello the CT680

Cat CT680 Truck

Not to shabby if you ask me. Out of the three trucks I like this one the most. Right from the start the CT680 was designed to be a long hood, set forward axle, heavy hauler. During the design phase Caterpillar asked their customers what they would like in terms of styling and the answer was bling. Or should I say more choices when it comes to chrome, external air cleaners and other assorted trim. Under the hood the Cat CT13 diesel engine provides power in the range of 410 to 475 HP and torque from 1,450 to 1,700 lb-ft. If those numbers don’t excite you executives from Cat have confirmed that a 15 liter engine will be available later this year. When production begins this July expect that many of the CT680s will leave the factory with the CX-31 automatic transmission mirroring trends seen in the other two Caterpillar rigs.

E.H. Perkins Fleet

Last year my wife proved the value of a spending money on expensive phones with high resolution cameras when she snagged this great photo an E.H. Perkins Peterbilt horse hauler at the NYS Fair. Today we catch another glimpse of this majestic fleet courtesy of Dave.

E.H. Perkins Mack Superliner

Dave tells us a little more about his history with E.H. Perkins.

My Dad worked for Ed Perkins and his various companies for 25 years. I grew up listening for the sounds of Ed’s trailer dumps heading back to the shop at the end of the day so I could run out to the side of the road pumping my arm for an air horn toots. On really special occasions I would get to ride along with one of the guys for a day.

Those are lifetime memories right there. Back in the day most of the trucks of the fleet were Mack unless otherwise acquired through the purchase of competing businesses. Dave recalls Autocars, Brockways, and even Crane Carriers wearing that very distinctive and eye catching color scheme of green, creme and red. Here is a nice perserved Mack R-Model that has been part of the company for at least 25 years.

Mack R-Model Dump Truck

Today you’ll still find plenty of newer Mack mixers working alongside front discharge Oshkosh units.

Mack RD Cement Truck

These are some really sharp looking trucks. Thanks for sharing these photos and memories Dave!

Autocar Mondays – 1956 DC with Integral Sleeper

Join me as we travel back in time to the 2011 ATCA national meet in Macungie, PA. Once again the archives of Daily Diesel Dose provide amazing footage of a very unique Autocar DC100 with integral sleeper. I’m not to entirely sure of the model but after browsing through Autocar Trucks of the 1950’s by Ron Adams I feel I’ve made a good guess. If you happen to know better please let me know.

Autocar DC100

Trucks like this one are as close as mankind will come to time travel. Sorry Mr.Fusion powered Deloran lovers. Keep dreaming. On the hood I can faintly see the phrase “1956 Model” which based on the style of the cab, grill, and sleeper seem correct. Then again, I could be seeing what I want to see. On the door we see the faded lettering for “Cam’s Union 76” of Warrenton, NC. The vibe I’m getting from this truck is that it was spec’d to be a highway hauler. I don’t believe the front axle ever saw spoke wheels but some form of steel budd. Once again, just a guess. Based on the rust around the doors and windshield this is not one of the lighter aluminium cab DC models. Take a moment to watch the video below and see if you can identify the make of the Cummins that brings this truck to life. More photos of the truck and engine can be found here at SuperShowRigs.com

I believe the driver of this truck is Ray Slagle who typically shows up to these kind of events in a very nice Brockway 761. Any tips on make/model/year/power plant are welcome!

M931 Dump Truck

Seth sent me this photo awhile back of what I presume to be a M931 dump truck wearing the colors of Nassau County emergency services.

M931 Dump Truck

Pretty heavy duty looking machine right there. So, for your military aficionados out there, is this really a M931? How can we tell? Extra louvers on the hood? Cab style? Bolt pattern on the hub? What tiny details to the untrained eye can tell us the true model. Share you knowledge below!

Theme Writting

The theme for today? Trucks with trailers. Yesterday some wandering around downtown provided two eye catching trucks of various varieties. First up, this Peterbilt of Tripifoods from Buffalo, NY.

Tripi Foods Truck

I used to see Tripi trucks with their distinctive black and gold paint schemes on the streets all the time and then one day they were gone. I figured the company had gone belly up but then I came across this beauty. It’s very refreshing to see a local company still running their own rigs and colors.

No stranger to the pages of Daily Diesel Dose are the trucks of Moulton’s Towing. Here we have well appointed Peterbilt dropping off jersey barriers to a local construction site. Nothing says extended road closure like concrete barriers.

Now this truck from Carbon Express wasn’t seen the other day but it still fits the overall theme of the day.  Always interesting to see a tanker pumping something in or out of a nondescript industrial building.

Variety is the Spice of Life

Would you be shocked if told that you while visiting the Walter AWUS recently sold by the Town of Camillus I stopped to look at some of their other trucks? I hope you answer was no!

16671200563_8e987d4910_b

The town has a huge fleet that is housed among two or three very large garages. One can only wonder at the treasures contained within. I went for the low hanging fruit in the form of trucks stored outside and even then I didn’t bother to photograph everything.

17105233179_a3b9255854_b

The fleet is varied with Sterlings, Volvos, Freightliners, Fords, and Internationals. No favoritism here. At least three Volvo VHD’s were found as dedicated dump trucks. Out back there were some older rig probably bound for the surplus pile in a few years. One of them was this International 2674. You know I love me some 2674 model. Somewhere I have a picture of the Ford seen lurking in the background.

In the gallery below we have a few more randoms along with shots of a Terrastar from the Tompkins County Highway Depart and an International WorkStar from the City of Auburn.

International Transtar II CO/COF-4070B

Hayes spotted this mint condition International Transtar II not too long ago outside the HQ of Kutzler Express in Kenosha, WI. Checking out their website you’ll find a photo of a similar Transtar when both trucks were presumably brand new units. The Transtar II, technically know as the CO/COF-4070B was one of the premier cabover trucks of its time. The highways and biways of America were jammed full of this model in various colors, trims, and wheelbases. With a production year range from 1974 to 1981 many can still be found lurking around backlots and the classic truck show circuit. If you’re really lucky you may even find one still working. This particular Kutzler truck is a prime example of how an otherwise bland fleet truck can really stand out with just a few tasteful pieces of chrome and other hardware. If my memory is correct I believe the owners of this truck were recently profiled in the ATHS publication Wheels of Time. I’ll dig through my archives and get back to you on the exact issue.

Thanks for sharing this awesome truck Hayes!

National Grid Bingo – Peterbilt 365

Just when you think the final number has been called a Peterbilt 365 with Terex long reach boom hits the board. If you look closely at the driver’s door you will notice the taped over logo of Nesco Rentals. I guess this must be a long term rental as National Grid saw fit to place a permanent logo on the door along with their DOT number.

National Grid Truck

Speaking of Nesco, I spotted this Freightliner 6×6 high lift of theirs a few months back. I’m not sure if will receive the same treatment as the Pete above but there really is only one game in town that needs a rig like this one.

Thanks for sharing Mark!

Autocar Mondays – Join The Club

Here we have a 1970 Autocar AT64-F seen at the ATHS National Show in Syracuse, NY from 2003. I bring this truck up because at the 2015 national show there will be a meeting regarding Autocar Trucks and the formation of group within the ATHS devoted to this classic line of American big rigs. I wish I could tell you more about it but I can’t seem to find the original notice of the event. I’ve gone through all the most recent Wheels of Times and cannot find any mention of it! Frustrating as I know I saw it. Or did I? The group will meet from 2 to 5 PM on Friday May 29th in the Utz Arena, conference room A/B. If you know more about what will be discussed or anything please let me know before I descend completely into madness.

Autocar A64-F

Andy Henderson, a former owner of this truck, fills us in on the details of this classic.

This was the prototype and built for the ATA 1969 Convention in San Fran. 434hp 12V71, RT1213 (not 12513) and Rockwell 44,000′. The motor ran 475,000 miles first time, rebuilt but a bad set of main bearings DD had on the market seized at 80,000 into rebuild and destroyed the crank. An NTA-370 was installed March 1978 which was shown in it here. It was sold to Mike Meros in NJ who started restoration but never finished before he passed and we understand it was scrapped. If anyone knows different, please advise. He had put it on an 85 Acar chassis and was working on a fab job of the cowel as this was 119 BBC due to a doghouse which made it a short BBC for a 12V.

Awesome! Yet very sad to here about Mike and the fate of this truck.
