The’re Baaack

Connective Corridor Construction season three starts again! The zero tail Volvo excavators arrived the other day on the back of a smooth looking Western Star of Schmidt Trucking.

Hope everyone is ready for more videos of streets being torn up, concrete sidewalks being poured and fresh asphalt being rolled.

Off the Bench

I found myself to in the position to due some unexpected truck spotting last Saturday but was without my usual camera. I figured that vivid recounts of the trucks I saw still wouldn’t be as good as low quality cell phone images so my Windows Dumb Phone was called off the bench. With the help of some bright spring sun the results were surprisingly good.

Up first was this photo op of the current International Trucks lineup with an 9900i, LoneStar and Durastar.

International Trucks

Down the street in a hotel parking lot this F-750 auger truck Henkles & McCoy made a statement.

Also in the same parking was this massive Peterbilt moving truck for Atlas Van Lines.

And across town this old International S-1900 is still working as a yard spotter for DTS Truck Repair. Past work history for this truck include local manufacturer Crouse-Hinds as seen by the symbol on the door. Love the tire chains.

In the gallery below is another truck from the trip plus another shot of the old Crouse-Hinds truck and Ford from the same time period and company.

Not Sure When This Will End

Right about now I’m thinking winter is never going to end. It is currently March 24th and the forecasted high for today will be lucky to hit the low 30’s. That’s some B.S. right there. Guess we’ll have to take the good with the bad and look some plows. Here is one from January third when winter was still cool and fun.

NYSDOT Mack Granite

A few weeks later on January 24th I took this photo of a new Western 4700 at Tracey Road Equipment. I was still on good terms with winter at this point.

Western Star 4700 Snow Plow

On Valentines Day I spied this WorkStar for the Madison County Highway Department at Stadium International. I was still OK with winter at this point but starting to think about seeing other people.

International WorkStar

Entering last week it seemed like hope was on the horizon and machines like this Cat 966G at the local CSX yard would become unnecessary for another year. Wrong answer. Try again.

Cat 966G Wheel Loader

In the gallery below we have a brand new single axle Mack Granite for parts unknown, current and new Western Stars for the NYSTA along with an International WorkStar, a very rare truck in the form of the only Mack in the employ of Onondaga County DOT, a Volvo VHD for the #1 Giants Fan, Western 4900’s for Oswego County and Town of Scipio.

Autocar Mondays – Concrete Block Mover

The day I win the lottery you’ll know about it not through a press release or seeing my photo on the news but by how barren the used commercial trucks section of eBay becomes once my check clears. I will single handily clear out any vehicle up for bid that was built prior to the 1985 model year. Seriously, there will be nothing left. Picked clean right to the bone like a lamb falling into piranha infested waters. While some items on eBay are over priced that will not matter to a Mega Millions winner like myself. I’ll probably have to establish my own shipping company just to get all my prizes home. If my numbers come in tomorrow one of my first acquisitions will be this mean looking 1972 Autocar DK wrecker.

s-l1600

Before reading anymore just take a moment to soak in the details.

Ridiculously massive steel bumper. Vintage orange rotating beacon lights. An exhaust stack that appears to be a straight pipe. Man crushing rubber all the way around. There is nothing I would change about this machine. Nothing. Straight to the nearest classic truck show it would go.

Look at those winches. Depending on the day they could either get you out of trouble or put you deeper into it. The current owner tells us this is a super heavy duty recovery vehicle was designed for the towing of cranes and loaded concrete trucks. As if there was any doubt to the power of this Autocar we are told it was once used to pull a bulldozer out of thick mud and fly ash. Hell yeah it did!

Unlike so many other eBay listings that provide little more than a blurry photo and one grammatically twisted sentence this seller comes straight at you with all the critical details.

–    Mileage: 75,000
–    335 Cummins Engine with Jake Brake
–    TO 955 ALL Transmission 8LL Speed
–    55,000 LB SUDD Rears 6.80 Ratio
–    Rubber Block Suspension
–    20,000 LB Front Axle
–    14” x 24” Front Tires at 60%
–    12” x 24” Tires on Tandem at 60%
–    Heavy Duty Hydraulic Boom with Extension
–    7 Ton Winch on Boom
–    (2) 60,000 LB Hydraulic CARCO P Winches with 1” Cable
–    65% custom built by owner

Plus you have the option of buying four other winches if you are the lucky bidder. To me this is a pure Autocar trucking right here. No need to finish the wrecker body, it’s simply superfluous sheet metal. Leave that frame exposed! The auction format for this truck is Buy It Now or Make Offer with a suggested retail price of 15,000 USD. While that may seem steep I’ll leave you with this one final photo that sealed the deal for me, a shot of the truck hauling butt down the highway complete with the famous Rolling Stones tongue. *heavy breathing*

Galion T-500 Grader

Oklahoma mud season is open. The first victim, that we know off, is this poor Galion T-5oo grader.

Galion T-500 Grader

Most likely a similar story to winter conditions with the operator getting a little to close to the edge allowing for the soft shoulder to suck them right into the ditch.

Time to find a dozer and some cable. Thanks to David G. for sharing!

Still Working – Mack R Model

It seems a little redundant to place a Mack R-Model in the still working category of the site due to their legendary toughness but here we are. David C. took a few photos of this well cared for Mack of the H&K Group while on a bridge rehab project last summer.

Mack R-Model Truck

Stop by the H&K website for plenty of photos from this massive construction firm. As you would expect from a company based in Pennsylvania Mack trucks play a prominent roll in their equipment fleet.

Still Working – Hough H70 Payloader

Why use jack stands when you can use a payloader? I has the good fortune to come across this 1964 Hough H70 being used to lift a trailer with bad landing gear the other day. Recently sold after decades of use by the Carthage Central School District this loader is powered by an International 429 six cylinder diesel engine. Auction notes described the overall condition of the machine as fair with minimal rust. Tire chains and 8 foot plow included! What a steal.

Hough H70 Payloader

When referring to other front end loaders or wheel loaders as Payloaders you would be incorrect as the Payloader eponym is actually a brand or trademark. Just like Kleenex is a brand of tissue but is commonly used to describe any form of that product. Nerdy enough? I think so.

Teichert Mixers

Look! A photo with no snow, no storm clouds, no gloom! Clearly it did not originate in CNY! Today Ryan shares with us a group of Kenworth T-800 mixers from of the Teichert company.

Teichert Truck

Time to start weening off plows and other snow fighting vehicles as spring approaches. I sure do like cracking jokes! I’ll be here all week folks. For more great mixer action check out Ryan’s website AllReadyMix.com

Forgotten Loaders

I almost forgot to share these snow removal photos with you the other day. I guess it’s all starting to blur together. Just like a few days ago these shots come to you from a variety of days and locations across the city.

16751215986_16b428599d_b

By now the combination of hard working DPW crews and warmer weather have removed most of the long standing snow piles. The winter of 2015. Almost gone and certainly not forgotten.

Autocar Mondays – No Lot Lizards

Autocar Mondays is back (did it ever leave?) with a visitor straight from the quarry. This ACL model originates from one of the local Hanson run operations of the area. I’m guessing this isn’t a truck that sees the open road much as no license plate, registration, or tax stickers are obvious. Zero signs of rust are another dead give away of a life spent in the salt free confines of the pit. A lockout tag can be seen hanging from the door right below the “No Lot Lizards” sticker. Safety first! Mother nature had just started giving this truck a bath when I stopped for a photo at the local spring shop. I like the look of this truck especially the seemingly large rubber tires out back mounted to a presumably heavy duty suspension.
