Trench Box Flipping

Maybe you’ve watched a strong man competition show in the past and seen the event where the competitors flip a large truck tire end over end. It’s also become very popular in CrossFit to prove how Alpha you are. No matter what size tire you can toss this Cat 930G has you beat as it flips a solid steel trench box down the street.

Mr. Plow and The Plow Kings

Here it is. An entire winter condensed into a video around 3 minutes and 30 seconds in length. The plow footage begins in November and carries straight through to March. Trucks from the Village of East Syracuse, Town of DeWitt, Onondaga County DOT, City of Syracuse and NYSDOT all have a staring role.

Mr. Plow and The Plow Kings, sounds like the latest hipster band to me! Enjoy!

Autocar Mondays – Oregon DOT

Does it get more Autocar than this?

Clearly this is a rhetorical question. Ryan is back with a vengeance today sharing with us a fleet of Autocars still in use by the Oregon Department of Transportation in the Cascade Mountain region.

You know you’ve made the right decisions in spec’ing out a truck when your ACL (the redheaded stepchild of the Autocar world) looks just as fierce as it’s DC cab styled brothers.

True monster trucks. Big thanks to Ryan for sharing!

Hit the Lights

I’m about ready to call it regarding the 2013-2014 plow hunting season. Oh, I know Mother Nature has other things in mind but I think we’ve all had enough. If the dealer lots and repair shops around town are any indication the trucks feel the same way. You can tell it’s been a long winter when I am the one looking for a light at the end of the tunnel. Did I make this same speech last year? Who knows. Time to finish strong.

Tom sends in a pic of a 1988 FWD of the Orangetown, NY fleet. Purpose built to get the job done.

ORANGETOWN #86 1988 FWD #4

Representing the latest generation of snow plows I bring you this Western Star 4800 for the Town of Pompey, NY.  When we last saw this truck it was just a bare frame and cab. Hopefully it will have to wait a few months before receiving a true test of abilities.

The Hi-Way DO-AL is a strange but interesting looking body.

Continuing the trend of Western Stars replacing every used plow truck here is the newest rig to join the Village of Minoa’s DPW fleet. A 4700SF. Possibly one of two trucks on the way.

In the gallery below we have more angles of the Minoa truck, a 4700 from the Town of Guilford, a NYSDOT Mack Granite, more coverage of the Pompey Truck and a Sterling from the Town of Onondaga.

Tomorrow the plow action continues for Autocar Mondays!

Still Working – International 9670

I came across this International 9670 last week full of damaged late model cars and I thought to myself where did all these trucks go? There was a time not too long ago when the roads were filled with this model cabover and those of other builders. They were the standard of OTR trucking for decades and then, as if by magic, they were gone. If I head down south or out west to spend any time near a container port I will probably see more but up here in CNY they are long gone.

The old forklift out back was a former NYDOT machine, it was still wearing the old swoopy T logo seen here.

On the Job – Random Cranes

I have a tough time photographing cranes usually because they are so large they are hard to frame correctly. Toss in a restricted job site and the task becomes even more difficult. Try, try, try again has to be the motto. I think my persistence has paid off with these two shots. The first cranes of 2014!

I was able to get a neat perspective on this Linkbelt 8690 from a nearby parking garage. While I wasn’t able to capture the lattice boom in the original shot its shadow does show on the wall for a neat effect. Raulli and Sons Ironworks is the owner and operator of this crane. If you recall they have a classic GMC General hanging out by their fabrication yard.

Yesterday I stumbled upon this Demag AC200 of Clark Rigging while it was hoisting a generator through the air. While this may seem like overkill it was really onsite to lift a large concrete catch basins (see below) for an ongoing sewer rehab project.

The Original Tilt Shift

Tilt shift photography as interesting combination of camera settings that transform real life subjects into ones that resemble scale models or dioramas. In the past Dan has shared with us his take on the latest rage with his photos of a crane move near Niagara Falls.

Now if your old school you may just care for the real thing and if that is the case you should check out this quickly approaching event.

show

For an idea of what you will find I suggest checking out this photo gallery. The amount of detail contained in these models is nothing short of insane. I’m not sure how people do it.

On the subject of scale models First Gear has just announced a new series using their latest release the Mack R model.

60-0242LR

The series will commemorate the fallen flags of these industry. It will be interesting to see what companies are selected by First Gear. The R-Model has a fully functional hood and detailed engine, working landing gear, roll up door, and more! Check out the full detail by clicking here.

False Start

Looks like the Barrett Paving crew I spent so much time watching last summer has returned for more storm sewer action. No doubt lured out by the warm weather of last week activity was in full swing on what appears to be the placement of storm sewers.

A few more excavators appear to be on hand this time around. The day after I took these photos the temperature dropped to the low teens and 12 inches of snow fell on the region. Things really haven’t improved much since then with bone chilling temperatures still in the weather report. Good luck guys!

*Update*

So I forgot to mention that as watched the ongoing construction I noticed a local news crew shooting some footage. I scoffed at their late arrival to the party but they did end up getting the full story. Many of the utilities along this this street scheduled to be replaced representing nearly half a mile of city streets waiting to be torn up for your photo and video pleasure. As KoolAid man would say. Oooooh Yeah!

Here is the video shot by the news crew. My goofy face didn’t make the cut.

Autocar Mondays – Ortiz Wrecker

There are times when you don’t have to say much about a truck. Often times that is the case with genuine Autocar Trucks. The entry for today is no exception.

Once again Jeremy shares with us a fine example of tow truck history with an massive looking A-Car equipped with an Ortiz Wrecker body. Too cool. You could probably pull a bridge with this setup. Click on the photo to enlarge!

Whole Lot of Cement Going On

A friend of mine moved into a new house about a year ago. You may remember when he shared with us a video of the lumber used to construct the frame of home as it was delivered. Almost since day one of the project he has told me of the sheer amount of truck and heavy equipment traffic that takes place in his new housing development. I’ve often thought I should swing by during the work week to check it out but I am lazy and forgetful. It’s a good combination. Thankfully he has taken the initiative and grabbed a few great shots.

V__9F5F

I never realized how many cement trucks were required to pour the foundation of modern home. In this photo alone there are four of them. Once you throw in the pumper truck you have one impressive operation.

A new house with a view of construction day in and day out. Talk about lucky! Trust me, he doesn’t feel this way. LOL!
