Make Way For St. Patrick’s Day

Two days ago we saw the City of Syracuse DPW crews patching the roadway for the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade. Today we join them as they clear mountains of snow from the sidewalks along the parade route to make life a little more pleasant for spectators. One thing is for sure, Mother Nature is not interested in her doing her part with frigid winds and a predicted temperature of high 20’s. I applauded the efforts of the DPW workers considering there was little time in between this clean up and the work necessary to clear the streets of snow following the most recent winter storm. I was lucky enough to catch some good action during my lunch break yesterday as snow was aggregated into massive piles.

Men with shovels fed Bobcats who in turn fed loaders that kept a steady stream of dump trucks busy for the 15 minutes I spent on scene. All of these machines worked together dodging stubborn parked cars and a few motorists who squeezed by the barricades. All of this in a effort to help the 9th largest St. Patricks Day parade go off without a hitch. That is dedication. I could watch work like this all day but my coworker had already put up with my drooling and the cold weather so I eventually moved on. Thanks for being a good sport Eric! No, I’m talking to myself (this time) we share the same name.

I think I was able to put together a nice video summary of the action. The two loaders pushing down the street at the same time is the highlight.

If some of this equipment seems familiar that because it is, most of the trucks and loaders seen here were used during the clean of Columbus Circle last month. Click here for coverage.

Now if you think the snow is a mess wait to see what the streets look like after the drinking portion of the day is finished. Yikes, bring out the fire hose! I tip my green top hat to the fine men of women of the Syracuse DPW for the work they provide the community. Keep it up and ignore the haters!

National Grid Truck Bingo – Video Edition

Welcome to the first edition of National Grid truck bingo containing video! It’s been a long time coming. Earlier this week there was massive power outage at the nations 6th largest mall, Destiny USA. The outage lasted for over 24 hours and affected a number of stores in the mall BUT didn’t result in a complete closure. The shopping must go on! Cruising by the mall late in the day I noticed a boom poking into the sky so I stopped by for a closer inspection.

Something really went wrong as three large transformers were already off their pads and awaiting transport. I was getting ready to leave when I noticed another truck pulling into the area, a Freightliner FLD complete with tag trailer.

Crews wasted no time loading him up. Squeezing by an illegally parked Tahoe proved to be the most difficult part of the process.

Also on scene were a two large portable generators. One from Cat and one from Cummins. I felt the C logo cut vents added a nice touch.

No word on what the problem was but I have a feeling National Grid won’t be able to chalk this one up to a squirrel chewing through some wires.

On the Job – DuraPatcher

Two days ago it was sunny and in the low 50’s. Today it is cloudy, a foot of new snow is on the ground and the temperature is topping out at seven degrees Fahrenheit. The joys of March! Not one to waste good weather Syracuse DPW crews were busy patching Salina Street in preparation of the St. Patrick’s Day parade to be held on Saturday. Using a truck mounted DuraPatcher system workers were able to quickly clean and patch any hole on the street.

13117177894_04babd8d4f_b

Watching the process was interesting. One worker drives the truck while another controls the nozzle at the back. This nozzle first blasts any debris away with a shot of air. A film of oil is then applied followed by the patching material which is a secret recipe.

Video for the non believers.

One of the local news stations caught up with the truck the other month and did a fluff piece about potholes and the dangers they pose to your car. In the video it is mentioned this patch process is near permanent and requires no rolling once applied. I wonder how it will hold up under the 48 hours of plowing brought on by winter storm Vulcan? ebay Finds – Oshkosh K2358

My dad tipped me of to this listing the other day and I’m glad he did. For those of you looking for rare and unique ride this is your ‘Kosh. Listed as a 1986 K2358 model this monster comes equipped with a 6 speed automatic and a Cummins KTA19-600 diesel engine, we’re talking 600 H.P. here people. With a leather interior and a sleeper berth you will stand out at all the classic truck shows and just about anywhere you travel. The cab and grill style of this truck remind me a Freightliner Powerliner on steroids. The seller states this truck was one of just a few built for Boeing and used to haul Peacekeeper missiles which is most likely a true story. A quick Google search reveals very little information on this model with only a few other trucks recently showing up at various government auction websites. The City of Houston surplused a K2358 just last year from their public works department. I wonder how they move their municipal nuclear weapons now? Past auctions of this model have ended north of 14,000 which puts the sellers Buy It Now price of 15k firmly in the land of reason. Located in Maryland this Oshkosh is rare find for us east coast dwellers so bid early and often if you want this rig to be yours! Check out the complete listing here.

Monster Jam 2014 Syracuse NY

Sunday! Sunday! Sunday! Well, actually it was Saturday but who cares when were talking monster trucks! This weekend I attended my first Monster Jam event in over a decade. The last time I saw the monsters race Grave Digger and Big Foot shared the same track. That little fact tells you something right there. While the trucks and corporate sponsors have changed over the years the basic show format remains the same with quad wars at the start followed by racing and then the crowd favorite of freestyle. Check out the photos below of the action.

Before this show I would have said it was impossible for a monster truck to sneak up on someone but that is exactly what happened to me when the mystery Doomsday truck roared on to the field. He completely got the drop on me following the close of freestyle and the show. To make matters worse vehicles entering the Carrier Dome field pass through one giant overhead door that must close completely before the next one opens, similar to an airlock. Somehow Doomsday performed this act without me noticing until he was well on the track and doing his first jump. Maybe I lack situational awareness or maybe the driver is that good of showman. I’m sure if I was a little kid I would have lost my mind when a new truck showed up after I thought all was said and done.

Doomsday Monster Truck – Click to Enlarge

No one is quite sure who drives this truck or where it came from. Aliens perhaps? Maybe the Daf Punk robots? Elvis? As soon as the truck left the field crew members quickly covered it with a trap. Mystery and intrigue at a monster truck show? Outrageous! Here is a clip of the truck in action with a near flip over around the 1:30 mark.

Prior to this great save the highlight of the freesytle segment was Max-D driving around on three wheels.

To setup a Monster Jam show you need heavy equipment. No, actually you need lots and lots of heavy equipment. The show field has over a foot of topsoil resting on several thousands sheets of plywood. It seems the local Cat dealer supplied three of everything to help put on the show. Loaders, material handlers, skid steers, excavators, they were all present. I enjoyed watching the equipment work as much the actual show itself. The gallery of photos below back up this statement.

Hanging around to well after the show was done under the pretense of waiting out the traffic I was able to shoot some video of the clean up process. Activity must have went on well into the night as a lacrosse game was scheduled for the next day.

All in all is was a great show that I enjoyed attending with fellow Daily Diesel Dose fans Dan and Kevin.

Autocar Mondays – The Philadelphia Branch

Jason sent me a neat link last week regarding the old Autocar Trucks factory branch in Philadelphia, PA and it’s untimely demise. Hemmings Motor news ran a story about the building in 2011 nearly a year after a fire tore through the historic building, destroying it completely. The story mentions that representatives of the current Autocar Trucks company were trying to obtain the large stone Autocar sign that adorned the front entry to the building. I haven’t been able to find out if they were successful or not but lets hope they were. You can read the full story here which includeds a depressing photo of the building.

In lighter news if you are looking to start your own Autocar fleet there is company selling six DC9364B models for discerning buyers. According to the TruckPaper listing the trucks have 260HP Cummins engines, 6 speed transmissions and Hendrickson rears. The trucks come from F.S. Lopke which at one time had more than a few Diamond Reo’s in their fleet. I have a picture saved from the early days of the web that I need to find that confirms this but until then check out the listing here or the photos below.

Autonomous Haul Trucks

The other day I came across this video from Cat Mining detail their advancements in autonomous vehicle operation, specifically haul trucks of the 793 variety. Skynet, otherwise known as the Cat Minestar System is capable of controlling a variety of vehicles from dozers above ground to loaders in the deepest coal mines. The benefits of autonomous vehicles are numerous. Trucks will always operate within the prescribed limits of safety and capacity. Computers never take a coffee break or play Words with With Friends while driving so mine owners are likely to seen an increase in cycle times and profit per ton. Watching the video below I couldn’t help but feel slightly creeped out watching an army of 250 ton behemoths toiling away under the desert sun with nary a human insight. A glimpse into the future? It’s already here.

There is much to be said about the benefit of autonomous mining with safety being a key factor. Workers will no longer have to operate machines in dangerous conditions. Instead of travel to remote mine sites they can login to a computer hundreds if not thousands of miles away from the safety of an air conditioned downtown office or even their home. It’s always been my dream to drive a 797F in my underwear.

Google driverless cars? Who needs em!

Pimp my Case 580 Super N Wide Track?

Welcome to another edition of Pimp My Backhoe…said no one ever. Inspired by the Ram Laramie Longhorn, Case Construction Equipment has taken an ordinary 580 Super N WT backhoe and dolled it up for ConExpo and other trade shows across the country. Check out those rims, talking about rolling on dubs!

Inside the operators cab the Laramie accents cary over to the seat and other components.

While we all enjoy these photos I’m going to get on my soapbox and complain about the growing trend to photoshop and generally over work every press release photo when it comes to trucks and heavy equipment. Ram and Case are guilty of it in the non ConExpo photos while the new Cat trucks have never seen a real location in their life! I’m sorry but I’d rather see the real truck in a real location. That’s just me.

HCEA 2014 Convention

Last year I made a resolution to bring more snow plow coverage to Daily Diesel Dose. Looking back I think I did rather well. Click here to see a compiled list of all the action. This year my goal is to visit truck shows or events I have not attended in the past. One such show already on my calendar is the 2014 Historical Construction Equipment Association national convention that will take place in Canandaigua, NY. Held in conjunction with the Pageant of Steam this show promises to be the place for heavy equipment fans this summer. I have never been to a HCEA event but from the photos and videos I have seen from past shows I am excited. I particularly like the fact that equipment is allowed to dig, dump, push, and pile as if you were at an actual construction site from years past. Yesterday Jason sent me a few photos from previous shows. I think you will enjoy what you see.

Where construction equipment goes so go trucks of both the display and working variety. It’s been a long winter. Time to get pumped about nicer weather and truck shows! The Canandaigua show will be held August 7-9th which just happens to be the same weekend as the Brockway Truck show in Cortland, NY. Tough choices will have to be made.

Thanks for the photos Jason!

New Trucks For Everyone!

It’s that magical time of year in which auto and industry trade shows pull back the curtain on new product releases. Usually the automobile industry steals the spot light but you can on me to ignore the latest Audi in favor of commercial truck platform news. In years past manufacturers have unveiled their new trucks at events like the Mid American Truck Show but with 2014 being the year of ConExpo (it only comes around every three years) it seems everyone is busy jumping on the excitement the show brings to a multitude of industries that trucks call home. Just yesterday we had some big news from Cat, Ford and Mack.

The 2015 Ford F-650 & F-750

Last week we learned that Ford was moving production of F-650 and 750 trucks from a Navistar plant in Mexico to their own plant in Ohio. To go along with this move a new body style will be available starting in 2015 that borrow body lines from the smaller trucks in the Super Duty line up, yup, the F-350/450 are small potatoes in this comparison. Production won’t start at the Ohio plant until 2016 but the Ford commercial trucks page is already touting their home grown pedigree. Along with the new body style comes the 6.7 Powerstroke V-8 diesel engine which has replaced a Cummins option. Paired with a V-10 gas engine Ford is now the only manufacturer to offer both gas and diesel engines options in their trucks. You may wonder why Ford even offers a gas engine. Simply put, it’s cheap…at least compared to diesel options, allowing them to compete with other well established medium duty trucks builders  (Freightliner & International) on price alone. One transmission,  a 6 speed Ford built automatic (bye bye Allison), is available for both engine options. No mention of any manual options. In fact Ford states there is no need for any other type of transmission. Confidence! Ford has it!

FordF650_01_MR

There it is and I think it looks great compared to the previous generation. There are no photos of the interior available but new user friendly gauges along with an easier to grip and use (?) steering wheel are mentioned in the press release that you can read here.

Cat CT681

I was starting to wonder about Cat and their foray in the U.S. vocational truck market. They hitched their wagon to International for production of the CT660 and it’s no secret that company has seen its fair share of trouble regarding their Maxxforce line of diesel engines. Many scoffed that CT660 was nothing more than a International Paystar with a different hood. A statement that caused more than a few Cat Truck dealers to writhe in pain. Grabbing market share in a mature industry with established players is a difficult challenge but Cat seems determined to make a go of it with the introduction of their latest truck, the CT681.

C10128995

So what do you think? To me, this screams Paystar more than ever before. Check out this photo of a 2007 Paystar SFA.

No denying the family resemblance if you ask me. According to Cat this truck has already undergone what equates to three years of product testing after an extensive field follow program that placed the truck with real world customers. The CT681 will be offered with the Cat line of on highway engines and the CX31 automatic transmission (manuals too). Read the full press release here.

Born Ready

For about two weeks Mack Trucks has been teasing people through social media about a big news release on 3/4/14. After a solid day of tidbits the news finally broke shortly before midnight (EST) at ConExpo. And the news was?! The Mack brand has been relaunched. Boring. I was not won over by corporate rhetoric and marketing noise.  A new logo consisting of a side profile of the famous Mack bulldog over the script normally found on trucks was the most interesting part of the night. I felt silly for staying up to watch an event that was little more than a glorified pep rally. At least we can take solace that the Volvo corporate overloads are trying to grow the brand. Hopefully there will be more than just stage shows in the future. If you were smart and went to bed you didn’t get to see this video. It’s worth a watch for the trucks alone.

Here is the new logo and tag line. It will look great on a t-shirt.
