Duplex Plow Truck

Duplex discussion has been pretty popular around here the past few weeks and now thanks to Ryan the fun continues. Take a gander at the “Last One”, a chunk of rolling steel that once operated for Fred Burrows Trucking of Whitesboro, NY. According to Ryan, the Duplex below and many others like it once worked in the employ of Burrows until they were phased out in favor of loaders with push blades. Another victim in the relentess march of progress.

Ram Trucks and Cummins – BFF

Earlier this week mankind reached another milestone. No, it has nothing to do with 12/12/12. Following a quarter century partnership, Ram Trucks and Cummins saw the creation of their two millionth diesel engine. If you consider all the shakeups, pitfalls, technological changes, and government regulations seen by the industry over those years the accomplishment becomes all the more impressive. One only has to take a look at what happened to Ford and International to see how quickly a successful partnership can head south. To read the official press release click here.

Game Over Man, Game Over!

Did you know that during the holiday season the average American household produces nearly 25% more trash than usual? It’s true. After all, something has to happen to those unwanted fruit cakes and dress socks. Staying with that train of thought the Komatsu loaders below are setup to move solid waste. You can tell based on those funny looking solid rubber wheels and the large buckets up front. It looks like every last drop of life was wrung out of these loaders before they hit the back lot at Tracey Road Equipment.

Syracuse Fire Department

Ripped directly from the City of Syracuse Fire Department website.

The Syracuse Fire Department protects a 25-square-mile area with a population of 145,000 that grows significantly during daytime hours. This department provides fire protection for four major hospitals, many downtown office buildings, Hancock International Airport, Interstates 81 and 690, as well as Syracuse University and the Carrier Dome.

Currently 390 firefighters staff the department and answer over 23,000 alarms a year of which 100 are major fires.

The Syracuse Fire Department holds an ISO class 1 rating, the only department in New York State to do so. There are approximately 30 departments nationwide that have a Class 1 rating.

Massey Ferguson 1979

I really enjoy vintage promotional films like this one produced by Massey Ferguson for investor audiences of the late 1970’s. The economic realities of the times bleed into the video as scary terms like “new management team” and “restoring the company to profitability” are tossed around while footage of combines and tractors take shape in presumably now closed factories. But I digress, this video is well worth the watch if not for great shots of now vintage equipment but to see factory life of years past. And to be honest, the disco music is somewhat catchy. Perhaps my favorite part is watching the CEO of a multinational company lighting the cigarette of factory working while standing on the production line!

Let Sleeping Dogs Lie

Once upon a time these trucks were top of the line. Now they just sit along the side of the road in a rundown, industrial part of town. The Mack RD looks alright from the curbside but is probably hiding some sort of larger problem.

The R-Model down the street is in a similar spot, quietly rusting away.

My part of the world seems to have plenty of old Macks to spare, most are white and spent the past days in the waste business. Check below for more old Bulldog action.

The Obsession Continues – Komatsu PC600LC

Nope, I’m not done stalking this machine yet! I took a stroll down to the work site the other day while on lunch. As you can see, the PC600LC was on its break as well. This photo gives you a great look at the length of the boom and the concrete sheers. I keep trying to catch this beast in action but it just hasn’t worked out. The other day on my way into work it was active so I hurried over to grab some video. Sadly, by the time I hoofed across town the Komatsu had moved to the other side of the job site to refuel! I waited around for ten minutes but it has a bigger fuel tank that I do patience.

The best truck ever?

Your average stock Freightliner M2 isn’t much to look at. Most of them are white with a large box on the back. Just another face in the crowd on the American highways. But not all trucks are created equal. As proof, take a look at this mobile brick oven pizzeria.

Yes, mankind now has the ability to move a 5,000 pound brick oven from street corner to street corner on a daily basis. The oven rests in a modified shipping container complete with barn style glass doors that swing open to offer an unobstructed view of the pizza making process. The design an fabrication of this mouth watering truck took nearly 18 months to complete. You can find this one of a kind Freightliner plying the streets of the San Francisco.

NYS Thruway International Workstars

The sun sets on a row of NYS Thruway International Workstars. This image would be even more poetic if the trucks were at the end of their life but no, they are brand new. They have yet to receive their NYSTA logo and other safety markings.
