CNY ATHS Show 2012

I’m a little late with this notice but the 2012 CNY ATHS show is THIS Sunday (7/8/12) at Long Branch Park in Liverpool, NY.  So far the weather looks to be perfect with a high of 82 and partly cloudy.  According to show organizers interest is at an all time high with more vendors and exhibitors calling than ever before.  Promos for the show have also been spotted on local news media.  Even gas prices are cooperating, diesel is now below 4.00 a gallon in many parts of the state.  I never thought we celebrate a milestone like that but times are what they are.  Skipping this show means you miss trucks like this White 3000.

The Tour Continues!

Good news everyone!  New tour dates have been added to the Kenworth T680 road tour!  Now is your chance to get up close and in personal if you missed the first round of dates.  I am excited to see that Kenworth of Buffalo (Syracuse) made the cut for September 19th.  Possible coverage to follow?  Click here for a list dates.

The Peterbilt 579 has also embarked on a cross country tour of its own.  More dates have been added for this tour as well but sadly the closet they come to my neck of the woods is Albany, NY.  I guess I will just have to make due with this photo.  Click here for a list of the 579 tour dates.

Navistar Joins the SCR Club

The writing has been on the wall for a few months now, EGR (exghaust gas recirculation) is dead.  As we know, only one truck builder, Navistar, chose to use EGR to meet EPA 2010 emission standards.  The plan was bold but extremely risky.  If successful, International would have been the only truck manufacturer able to offer a Class 8 rig without a SCR system.  This means no DEF, no extra tanks, no extra plumbing, and no driver training.  I think this would have been a very attractive option to both large fleets and owner operators.  I mean, how can  you make the case against simplicity?

The gamble began to fail early this year when it was announced Navistar’s 13 Liter engines would not be certified compliant.  To skirt the issue Navistar was allowed to pay a fine for every engine produced.  To add a bizarre twist the technology used in EGR engines was developed by the EPA and licensed to Navistar. Strangely it was not advanced enough to meet 2010 requirements.  Another blow came when truck builders already in compliance (Volvo/Mack) sued to the EPA to stop the fines that allowed the sale of non compliant engines.  The basic argument was “it’s not fair to us who played by the rules from day one”.  A federal court agreed and ordered the fines to cease.  No more fines equal no engines sold.

As much as International pushed EGR as the best emission control option the engines themselves had serious problems outside of non certification.  Warranty claims spiked in 2011 resulting in a revision of earnings that lead to a 2nd quarter loss.

Oh, and don’t forget the activist investors buying up stock, takeover/buyout rumors involving Fiat and VW, and top management shakeups and you have the perfect storm.

Yesterday rumors began to circulate that Cummins engines would be available some time in 2013, a claim denied by International.  This seems like a logical choice but goes against the company goal to manufacturer engines in house.  Today news is breaking that Navistar has announced it will move away from EGR in favor of SCR.  The current engine lineup will modified to run the pollution control “standard” of the industry.

I won’t fault Navistar/International for trying to make EGR the golden goose.  Had their plan worked they would have gained immense leverage in the already hyper competitive heavy duty truck market.  However, one has to wonder why there was no backup plan in place other than using emission credits and paying fines.  After all, International had to know the engines didn’t cut emission to the high 2010 standards form day one…right?  It makes me wonder if there is more to the story, after all, there usually is.

Forty Years of Centro

This year marks the 40th anniversary of Centro. To celebrate the milestone the company has wrapped one of their buses to resemble a 1970’s Flxible.  I like it!  Much better than the usual Billy Fuccillo ads.

Lost and Found – In the Dumps

Time to take a trip through the DDD archives for the most recent addition to the Lost and Found file.  This Brockway 761 used to reside in an empty lot on the west side of Syracuse.  The surrounding area is pretty sketchy and the truck sat at the far end of the lot so I figured the only photo I would ever have would be the one in my mind.  After driving by the truck nearly every day on the way home from work my curiosity eventually got the better of me and I decided the time had come to take a closer look.  To add an extra twist I learned the lot was soon to be cleared for the construction of a new Rite Aid.  It was now or never.

So there she is, in all her glory.  It is hard to tell from the photo but the windshield is long gone.  Eventually the lot was cleared and the truck disappeared.  Gone for good most logical minds would assume.  Believe it or not, this truck must have value to someone as it moved one mile up the road.  As of July 2011 this is how the truck looks according to Google Maps.

This may just warrant a closer inspection.

Also on the lot was this baby blue International dump truck.  Appears to be solid.  The color reminds me of Chicago DPW scheme but Syracuse is a loooong way from Chicago so who knows.

On the Job – National Grid Freightliners

Adding to the ever expanding National Grid archives here at Daily Diesel Dose check out this collection of Freightliners.  The first truck has a Posi-Plus cable handler mounted out back.  Interesting but ultimately worthless fact, the reel drive torque for this unit is 285,000 inch pounds.  According to Google this works out to be 23,750 foot pounds of torque, each your heart out muscle car guys.

This truck below is a Freightliner M2 112 with Detroit DD13.  Another interesting fact, Detroit Diesel is slowly dropping the diesel from it’s name.

ATHS Springfield – Expanded Coverage

Just when you thought it was over….more ATHS Springfield videos like a blow to the back of the head!

Take a look at this sweet B-Model Mack hauling an even sweeter 1950 International L-112 pickup.  When I first saw this truck I nearly flipped out.  You see, the green International on the back is nearly identical to the one I own.  I have been to many truck shows and it is rare to see IHC pickups and even more rare to see L-Series pickups.  For a moment I thought he stopped by my house and grabbed the truck I had hoped to bring to the show.  Moral of the story, I need a bigger tow vehicle!

Hailing from the world class collection of George Tackaberry we have this Dodge Big Horn. No relation to the lame marketing attempt used today to sell Ram Pickups.

More video to come!

More Plows

Guess what, Christmas is only 182 days away!  And with that magical season comes snow.  And with that snow comes plows.  Bet you didn’t think I could work a plow truck post into the middle of summer!

ebay Finds – 1990 AM General

Checking out the military vehicle page on ebay it’s not uncommon to come across used transport trucks like this AM General. Most are straight out of the service with numerous battle scars. Others have been completely restored, bobbed, and placed on Big Foot size rubber. So if you want to make your truck stand out of from the crowd of other retired rigs you have to do something a little…radical.

You know you’ve found a listing worth while when the tag line reads “You’ll be that crazy guy in the neighborhood everyone talks about”. Sounds like big shoes to fill but this truck has the guts to pull it off. If you are one of those who felt the original M35A2 didn’t look tough enough your truck has arrived. The current owner has combined the brutish good looks of the Hummvee with a massive chunk of steel large to take out any Prius that dares to cut you off. Don’t forget the custom chrome stacks that shoot flames. Yes, flames. After all, you need something to match the 50 Cal machine guns built into each fender. Despite all the attention grabbers this truck has not been slapped together. New gauges, paint, rubber and canvas make up a truck that is basically brand new.

Mack in HD

Sorry everyone, this recent heat wave is keeping me away from my computer which is preventing me from accessing most of the stuff I use to update this site!  Hopefully it cools down this weekend so I can get back to business.  In the mean time, enjoy this HD video of Mack trucks in action.
