Surplus Oshkosh Snow Blowers

The other day the annual fall auction of surplus state vehicles passed through the DOT Region 3 Headquarters. This time around the auction lots were light on heavy trucks except in one category. Snow Blowers. The three Oshkosh units we’ve seen hanging around the edges of past auctions were now finally up for sale to the highest bidder. Auction paper worked had them listed as 1953, 1984 and 1989 model years. As we learned before thanks to the knowledge of Joe Kelly and Jim Menard these trucks were actually much older but experienced a rebuild program at the hands of Oshkosh and their previous owner, the U.S. Air Force. I was most interested in the 1953 model as, in theory, it was not restored. This turned out not to be the case but still had a secret to share.

Poking around the 1953 it wasn’t hard to find the data plaques from Oshkosh indicating the truck had been rebuilt in 1979 during which it most likely gained the Cat 3406 crammed under the front hood. Out back conventional wisdom suggested another Caterpillar engine could be found in the form of D-343 or larger. Heading back to take a look I received two surprises. The first shock came when the spring loaded engine compartment door that had been so stubborn at first finally sprang open in a shower of rust and yellow paint flecks. After I cleared my eyes I didn’t see the familiar yellow hallmark of Caterpillar but the sea foam green of none other than Detroit Diesel. It was a huge lump of steel. Looking at the exhaust manifold I counted the number six. Yes, a V12 Detroit 6-71 was the power the front blower.

This was the perfect truck for those who can’t choose between Cat or Detroit. Auction paperwork had the mileage on the truck barely edging 3,000. No title or any other paperwork was available and the truck was sold with the understanding that it held no other value than scrap. Insane! Check out the video below for a walk around of the truck and the others around it. If you’re into modern rigs check out the very end for a sneak peak of the new Internationals that will be hitting the roads this winter.

The stills.

Door for Scale

Please note the door behind this Cat 545D for scale so you can fully appreciate the size of this machine. Guess what? There is a model size up from this one! It must be a real joy to put chains on a vehicle like this.

Cat 545D

So how many old skidders do you think have to be traded in to purchase one brand new 545D?

I think I enjoy the new/used forestry section at Milton Cat the most. There always seems to be something interesting to see.

IMCATS 2016

IMCATS 2016 is almost open us. I know in this internet age of ours you’ll probably think this has something to do with cats as nearly everything on the internet has to do with cats. Felines are the official animal of the web with ceiling cat, icanhazcheezburger, and of course, grumpy cat.

Now that I’ve cleared up that confusion check out the official details for the 2016 International Model and Construction Truck Show.

imcatsflyer2-800x533

Often times when I take a picture of construction site I think of these style of dioramas. I like to think that my photos might help someone custom model a piece of equipment or a construction scene. Dan was nice enough to send in some photos from past years that really showcase the best of the hobby.

What are you waiting for? Time to shuffle off to Buffalo.

Autocar Mondays – A DC For You and Me

It’s just not a classic truck show if there isn’t an Autocar or two, or three, to drool over like this 1972 DC9364 proudly owned and displayed by Don Berch. Originally a tandem axle on leaf springs this truck was cut down to just a single rear riding on air suspension. Under the hood the original Cummins NTC 355 and 13 speed Fuller remain stock and unrestored. You can read more about Don and his truck by visiting the Hemmings article found here.

DC Autocar

A long time standard at the ATHS Hudson Mohawk show are the Mullin’s Rigging trucks. In the video below we’ll see some action as the DC-1ooT is unloaded as well as the Berch truck motoring around.

Until next year.

ATHS Hudson Mohawk – Part V

You could argue that International Sightliner was a truck ahead of the times with styling that must have seen downright futuristic in the late 50’s and early 60’s. With unrivaled BBC measurements and a cab that offered a second windshield by the feet of the driver the Sightliner was the logical choice for an intercity delivery truck.

This old Sightliner was able to catch the eye of movie producers when they began casting for a futuristic vehicle. Back in 2011 Hugh Jackman starred in a movie called Real Steel, a movie with a plot that combined the best of the films Rocky, Over the Top, and Johnny Five. Set in the near future, (2020’s?) robot fighting has become an international sporting phenomenon with Jackman traveling the country as a small time competitor using the Sightliner as his base of operations. The truck you see below was used in every scene in which a truck was called for, there were no stunt doubles or spare trucks used for just the moving shots, this rig did it all. Recently for sale on ebay, this International found its way into the fleet of a local collector and remains intact as it was seen in the movie including the functional robot repair bay.

I remember when Real Steel first came out and a friend, with very little truck knowledge, approached me excited about what they had just seen on the silver screen. They couldn’t wait for me to see the movie so I could catch a glimpse of the “very futuristic” truck created for the film. I didn’t have the heart to tell them the truck was already 60 years old by the time the movie was filmed to say nothing of its age according to the movie timeline!

Real Steel Truck

While I generally don’t cover too much of the tractors that show up at the truck show I had to watch as this Michigan 55A wheel loader was unloaded. It seems like it would be a useful machine to have around the home.

Below, the near final group of photos from the 2016 show. Tomorrow we’ll have an ATHS Hudson Mohawk version of Autocar Mondays and then the book will close for another year on this great show. Thank you to all those that volunteer at the show and those that bring out their trucks. It wouldn’t be the show it is without you!

ATHS Hudson Mohawk – Part IV

At one point during the show I was asked if I was going to have enough footage to fill at least four days on my site. The answer is yes. Hopefully it doesn’t feel like I am dragging this out.

Brockway Tow Truck

I wandered by this old International R-Series a handful of times before I finally took notice of the faded lettering on the door. I was shocked to see that it read Minoa Fire Department. My mind raced. Could this be from Minoa, NY? The very same Minoa that is only five minutes outside of my current home in East Syracuse? Surely there must be another Minoa the logical part of my brain cried in vain. In reality this world is only big enough for one Minoa and that’s where this truck came from all those years ago. Looking inside revealed stickers on the dash from the Mattydale Fire Department and the office of Onondaga Emergency Management. I never had a chance to cross paths with the owner. Too bad, it would have been nice to hear the back story on this truck. Startup video can be found here.

Minoa Fire Department

At this point in the coverage you might notice the photos quality changes a bit. I finally bought a new phone a few weeks ago (Galaxy S7) and gave it a work out taking show photos. On the phone screen the pictures seemed brilliant. On larger displays the luster fads very quickly. My old Sony DSC-HX9V lives to fight another day.

However, the S7 did take some decent video. The Brockway U360 and IHC Classic trucks videos from the past days were a mix of both devices. This video below however is all from the old workhorse.

ATHS Hudson Mohawk – Part III

I hear there many GMC Generals running around the Ballston Spa part of the world and until now I had to take those stories at face value.

GMC General

They say the cabover truck is making a comeback…among collectors that is. Can you imagine a world where the big national fleets started spec’ing out trucks like this one? One word comes to mind. Utopia.

Kenworth Cabover

And now on to everyone’s favorite style of video, truck after truck arriving to show. I’ve heard tell that the old Mack mixer was found in the condition seen below. Amazing!

And of course, more photos.

ATHS Hudson Mohawk – Part II

There is a spot near the rear of the fairgrounds in Ballston Spa that usually provide the best photos of the day with the sun being at a perfect location to the rear of the camera along with a steady stream of trucks heading to the show field.

Classic Kenworth Truck

But you know me, I don’t stay in one spot too long at a truck show. I usually abandon this sweet spot at the first break in the action to take in the sights of the unloading area.

This Chevy C/60 made two runs throughout the day. On the first trip it brought in an International 1466 tractor, quickly unloaded, and then returned with a Michigan 55A wheel loader.

Below, a Brockway U360 with 12V71 Detroit Diesel. These seem to be a very popular truck among the truck show crowd recently.

More to come!

2016 ATHS Hudson Mohawk

Another great ATHS Hudson Mohawk classic truck show has come and gone. If you missed this year you might want to just skip this site for the next few days as you’ll see that 2016 was one for the record books in terms of size, variety of trucks and great weather.

With that disclaimer out of the way let’s jump right to it with a pair of International Trucks so nice they can only belong to one man, George Tackaberry. I’ve made it know before that I’m an International Trucks fan so it should come as no surprise that I drooled all over these trucks, a 1961 Emeryville and a 1969 Transtar 400.

Classic International Trucks

They sound as great as the look.

Much more to come.

Autocar Mondays – Bringing Down the Roof

This 1987 Autocar ACL is still going strong after 29 years of active service with the Sauquoit Fire Company. Back in the early years of this truck when the ACL line was still the new model on the block, this truck suffered damaged when the fire garage it was parked collapsed under the weight of heavy snow. Because it’s an Autocar the ACL only suffered minor damage to the lights and a portion of the cab. After a quick repair it was back on the job. A 1987 model, this rig is powered by a Cummins (L10?) engine connected to an Allison Automatic.

The fire fighting equipment is a Saulsbury 1250/1200 tanker setup.

A big thank you to Mark for taking the time to talk with the driver about this truck and sending in the photos. If you’re itching for more fire truck action head over to cnyfiretrucks.com for more!
