Gearz

Depending on how much TV you watch you may remember a show called Trucks!  I used to watch the show all the time with my dad.  It was a good show with a great host by the name of Stacey David.  Stacey really knows his stuff and it showed.  He wasn’t just another talking head repeating lines from a true mechanic stationed behind the camera.  Eventually he left to star his own show by the name of Gearz which currently airs on Speed.  Now, if you need any convincing that this is your type of television show just checks on the clips below.  Yes, he is working on International Loadstar CO.  WHAT?!

Want to see more? Hit the links below to watch as Stacey stuffs a souped (600HP) up Durmax and Allison automatic into this old truck!

Versatility and Dependability

This interesting setup was at the local International dealer a few weeks back.  I can hear some of you moaning now.  NOT ANOTHER PLOW TRUCK!  Well, what can I say, CNY specializes in this type of vehicle.  From the front this truck is your standard medium duty setup but when you walk around to the rear you notice what makes this truck unique.  The bed of the truck is actually a roll back. This allow for a variety of bodies to be quickly and easily changed.  One moment you have a salt truck, the next, a dump bed.  The choice is yours.

The actual 250,000th T-800

I mentioned the other day the milestone Kenworth reached with the production of the 250,000th T-800. I didn’t have a photo of the actual truck so I used a stock image. Regular visitor Jim did some digging around and found a photo of the actual truck and official press release.

The landmark Kenworth T800 was received by Trican Well Service Ltd., which is one of North America’s largest providers of oil and gas pumping services and whose headquarters is located in Calgary, Alb. Trican purchased the new T800 from GreatWest Kenworth in Calgary and expects to use the vehicle to transport a massive coil unit in excess of 200,000 lbs. in the oilfields of North America. The Kenworth T800 has become Trican’s truck of choice for its versatility, reliability and high maneuverability.

Trican’s tridem, wide-hood T800 is powered with a Cummins ISX15 500 hp engine rated at 1,850 lb-ft of torque at 1,200 rpm and driven by an 18-speed manual transmission. The T800 features the Diamond cab interior with Kenworth NavPlus®, and the Kenworth 38-inch AeroCab® sleeper. Other specifications of interest include Kenworth’s large, 1,780 square-inch cooling module, Kenworth AG690 rear suspension, Dana Spicer D2000 20,000-lb. standard track front axle, 20,000-lb. Watson and Chalin steerable pusher axle, factory-installed transmission power takeoff (PTO) and auxiliary split-shaft PTO, and front and rear Bendix air disc brakes.

Big Rig Rescue!

Check out this story from the Minneapolis Star Tribune about a quick thinking state trooper and group of semi trucks that prevented a potential suicide attempt.  When emergency personal were called to an I-94 overpass this past Monday they found a man clinging to the side, threatening to jump.  While fire fighters attempted to remove the chain link fence separating the man from rescue, state police officers enlisted the help of truckers stuck in traffic.  Using six trucks the state police formed a platform they hoped would break the fall if the man fell or decided to jump.  Rescue personal were eventually able to pull the man off the ledge and to safety.  Click the link below to watch actual footage of the rescue.  Team work!

250,000 T-800’s

The 250,000th T-800 has just rolled off the assembly line.  Time to panic?  The answer would be yes if the T-800 in question was manufactured by Cyberdyne Systems.  Thankfully Skynet has yet to take over and the T-800 is still just a tough truck built by Kenworth using human workers.  Last year Kenworth celebrated 25 years of T series goodness and now they can revel in this new production milestone.  Click the source link at the bottom of the page for the full details and specs of the 250,000th truck.

In Memory

Some may find this photo to be morbid, after all, both companies pictured ceased to exist years ago.  I won’t get into the details or theories for why theses two companies are no longer around.  Some will blame management.  Others will blame employee unions.  No matter what turn the discussion takes the end result remains the same.  Two long established companies closed and left many hard working people without employment.

Consolidated Freightways was one of the big names in the U.S. transportation industry.  Before declaring bankruptcy in 2002 it was one of the largest coast to coast trucking firms.  The legacy of CF is a long one that continues to have an impact on the trucking industry to this very day.  You see, CF founded the truck manufacturer Freightliner.  The popular story being that CF owners were unable to find a truck that meet their specific needs so the decided to build their own.  The modern trucking company Con-way was also formed from the LTL (less then truck load) side of the CF empire.

This Ford Aeromax L9000 is attached to a reefer trailer that once belonged to P&C Food Markets which operated stores across NY, PA, OH and WV.  P&C was finally put out of its misery in late 2010 when the remainder of its stores were purchased by Tops Markets.
