Lost and Found – GMC General

Much like their human counterparts old trucks never die, they just fade away. Until a recent construction project exposed this GMC General its fate seemed to be just that, slowly fading away. This was another chain link fence peep through but from what I can seem this truck appears to be very solid.  Chances are high this is powered by a Detroit Diesel. Time to get her back on the road!

Terex Cold Planer

Check out this hot ride, the Terex PR600.  Top speed, 3 mph.  Operating weight, 43 tons.  Power, 600 HP.  This machine has 185 tungsten carbide teeth that rip at pavement up to a depth of 14 inches.  Have you ever passed through a construction zone and noticed the road is lower and has grooves?  This is the machine responsible.  Cold planers like this one allow for quick resurfacing of roads.

Grillin and Chillin

Yesterday Kurt sent me this photo of the ultimate grill. Your eyes do not deceive you. What started life as a 1987 Ford LN8000, CAT powered, oil delivery truck has been frankensteined into one ridiculously cool mobile grill. With this truck you have the capacity to cook 1750 hot dogs per hour or 1000 burgers. I love it!

Diesels Behaving Badly

The internet is a vast place. It potentially contains all human knowledge. It also contains videos like the two below. First up is a story about a runaway Terex TS24 Scraper in the beautiful English countryside. Watch as witness recount this harrowing story with typical English whit and reason. Major props to the police officer than ran along side of the Terex over rough terrain for what seems like twenty mile. I hope they gave him an award.

Next we have the restoration of an old GMC with a Detroit 4-71 that has been sitting since 1981. The truck puts on a good show, refusing to start and lulling the two younger men into false sense of security. Little do they know it just waiting for the right moment to strike.

A “stuck” diesel is a very popular video to post on Youtube. Apparently the only full proof method to stop such a condition is to deprive the engine of air. Turning off the ignition or disconnecting the battery will have little impact. Based on the calm reaction of the older gentleman in the video he has seen this happen before.

White? GMC? Volvo? Autocar?

You may recall that a few weeks ago I stopped by the Town of Camillus DPW garage where I spied these two Walter Snow Fighters rusting away behind the free mulch piles.  Clearly they are done plowing for the town.  As cool as the the Walters are they were not the only vehicles that caught my eye.  Below are a few trucks that reside outside.  One front line fighters now displaced from their heated garages by newer rigs.  The models you see below represent a confused time in the trucking world.  The long and storied history of the White Motor Company was drawing to a close.  Purchased by Volvo, White trucks began to wear a badge that combined another corporate acquisition, the GMC heavy truck line.  Style cues began to bleed over from the parent company Volvo until remnants of White/GMC/Autocar were gone.  You can see this progression take place with the first three trucks in the gallery below.

Terex Water Truck

Why does it always seem like the the best stuff is locked away behind tall barbed wire fences with ominous “trespassers will be prosecuted” signs? For example, this Terex off road dump truck that has been converted to a water tanker. Good thing my new camera has a fairly decent zoom.

Here is a video of a similar Terex (Detroit Diesel powered, maybe a 12V71) as it is put through the paces. Watch for the Buick at the half way point of the video that runs for it life.

The Age of Classics

You may not  know this but right now we are living in the age of classic trucks.  According to Business Week the U.S. truck fleet is the oldest it has ever been since they year of 1980. A majority of the fleet is comprised of trucks built prior to 2007 when tougher emission standards spurred buyers to stock up on power units.  Most of these trucks now have over 500,000 miles on the odometer which places them in the territory for costly repairs, nearly 5 to 7 times more per mile than a truck with less than 200k.

If you’re in the market for a new truck now is the time to place your name on the list.  The average industry back log is around five to six months but expected to increase to seven fairly soon.
