Lost and Found – Reo 6×6

Here is one from the archives of the lost and found file, a 50’s era Reo complete with an IHC Comfo-Vision cab. Based on the large one piece window at the back of the cab it would be safe to put this truck in the mid 50’s to early 60’s. I know some of you may find the for sale to be enticing but it’s too late to buy this truck. It has been gone for at least five years or more. I’m not sure if it found a good home or went to the scrap yard in the sky but either way it lives on here at Daily Diesel Dose.

At the Dealer – International WorkStar

I was digging through some old photos for this site that for one reason or another have gone unused when I came across this International WorkStar.  I’m not sure why I didn’t use it but I really like this photo.  I think it captures all the features of the entire truck rather well which is usually the hardest part when shooting these trucks.

The shade of green this truck wears reminds me of the same green used by NYS DEC equipment.  See the second photo below.  The bumper up front has plenty of space for a PTO or plow equipment.  If this WorkStar was destined to be a DEC truck it’s possible it may just be building the roads of your favorite campsite or or picking up the trash.  Either way, your tax dollars at work.

Still Working – Diamond Reo Dump Truck

How about this classic Diamond Reo for your Sunday reading pleasure.  I spotted this truck at a local yard that is usually home to a few late model dump trucks of local hauling company.  At one point in time they had a Diamond Reo in their fleet but this truck was a new one.  I had never seen it before and have yet to see it again.  As I recall the truck sat in the yard for weeks waiting for me to stop and grab a few photos.  Nearly each day I would pass by and say “I should take a picture of that” and then I would continue on my way.  The lesson of truck photography is this, when see it, shoot it.  More often than not a truck will be gone by the time you return.  Obviously, this was not the case with this truck but you never know!  Have your cameras ready!

This particular model Diamond Reo is a big truck with a very looooong hood.  Nothing about this truck is subtle.  Maybe that is why all the chrome, lights, mirrors and other custom touches works so well with it.  Accents like these would just look silly a modern truck.

The Classics – Part 2

Yesterday I brought you some great trucks from the 2007 ATHS national show in Colorado Springs.  The show was huge and had many great trucks.  In fact, it was so great it required a second post!  So today I bring you part two!  The strange looking blue truck in the collection below is Paymaster.  It was a very advanced vehicle for it’s time that helped test and develop many technologies in use today on both trucks and cars.  I’m pretty sure only a handful still remain.

The Classics

Thought I would take a step back and time and visit some of the great trucks that were at the ATHS National show in Colorado Springs, CO back in 2007.  This was the second national show I attended and it was well worth the travel time from NY.  To start with, Colorado is beautiful state and the ATHS had a full slate of activities planed including a truck run to the top of Pikes Peak.  But, most importantly, the variety of trucks was outstanding.  Speaking as one who attends mostly Northeast truck shows it was great to see what type of rigs make the shows west of the Mississippi.

Of Course, this is only a tiny fraction of what attended the show and what I photographed.  Stay tuned!

The Future of Trailers?

Could this be the future of trailer technology?  It doesn’t take much to realize a square box being dragged down the road at 65 mph is anything but efficient in regards to aerodynamics.  With that premise in mind Mercedes Benz engineers  have designed a trailer to radically change the world as we know it.

Tests have shown that the duck tail fins at the back of the trailer reduce wind resistance by 18% percent.  Working in tandem with all the other features and paired with the right truck and you just might see a yearly reduction in fuel consumption by 528 gallons.  Multiply that number by the average diesel cost/gallon and you have a nice chunk of change.  And don’t forget, the less fuel you burn the less CO2 that enters the atmosphere which makes Al Gore very happy.

2012 ATD Commercial Truck of the Year

The trucks have been tested, the list has been generated, the ballots are printing as we speak.  Judging critera such as overall look, roominess and ease of maintainence a select panel of journalists have made their call.

And the nominees for the heavy duty (Class 8) segment are…

Peterbilt 587

To me, the Freightliner seems like the odd man out in this competition as the other three trucks are OTR models with completely different setups in terms of suspension, steering and styling.

The official results will be announced the NADA-ATD convention in Las Vegas this coming February.  What truck grabs your vote?

Still Working – International Eagle

Today we have some what of a classic rig, an International 9300 Eagle.  This truck can trace it’s heritage all the waaaaay back to 1984 when it was introduced as a premium conventional model which basically means that this truck was designed to look boxy and run with a long hood and an even larger grill.  The winds of change were blowing, calling for aerodynamic efficiencies in the form of side skirts, sleeper cab fairings, and roof wings.  But one truck would stand firm and remain unchanged until the mid 90’s, the International Eagle!

The Eagle was actually a model line of the 9300.  It was the best of the best, designed to appeal to the owner operator set and fleet owners looking for their flagship truck.  No option was too good for the Eagle.  It came with unique paint colors like laser red and sonic blue. A dash made of rosewood complemented the leather wrapped two spoke steering wheel.

Now, I can’t tell you what year this truck is or what options it has but I can take a few educated guesses.  To start, look at those cab marker lights, very old style.  Original to the truck?  Who knows.  The bumper certainly doesn’t look stock.  I’m not making much progress identifying this truck so I’ll stop now.  Enjoy your week!

Hough H60 Payloader

Keeping the loader trend going from earlier in the weekI present you with this Hough H60 Payloader.  You’ll notice that this loader is wearing the famous “man on tractor” IH logo of International Harvester.  Hough was purchased by International in 1952 and the name continued on loaders and other heavy equipment through the mid sixties which also happens to be the time frame of this loader.  It looks like this machine has seem some sort of restoration as the logos and paint are in very good shape.  From what I can glean from the internet this H60 was probably gas powered with three forward gears.
