Your new truck awaits

Here we have three brand new Kenworths and one Peterbilt heading to their new homes. This is a common mode of transport for new trucks from the factory to the dealer. Most dealers have a hoist system on hand to unstack the truck when they arrive. The delivery driver then takes a bus back home or they may have towed a small car behind the trucks. My educated guess about the models? The Peterbilt looks to be a Model 337 complete with urea tank (between gas tank and battery box). The first Kenworth is probably a T440 based on its heavy steel bumper and flotation tires while the two trucks toward the back look like T270’s.

Still Working – B Model Mack Dump Truck

Patrick submits the photos below for todays Still Working post, a Mack B-125 dump truck. On the doors you can faintly see the words New York, the words after that are anyone’s guess. This old Mack appears to be in great shape as you can tell from the new exhaust and hydraulic tank, clearly it is still meant for work. Thanks for the great submission Patrick!

9.8% Please

Late last week the floundering stock price of Navistar received quite a boost when “activist investor” Carl Ichan purchased a 9.8% interest in the company worth around 118 million.  In the financing and investing industry Ichan is now for this kind of behavior, that is, purchasing large shares of companies he believes to be undervalued.  With the shares comes the ability to appoint board members that can help dictate the direction of the company following his plan.  The ultimate goal? Change an undervalued and possibly under performing company in a  profit machine.  Mr. Ichan already holds a share of fellow truck manufacturer Oshkosh so he may be poised to shake up the industry.  But the question remains, will these two truck builders hold the attention of this activist investor?  Similar control bids with Clorox and Lions Gate Entertainment did not produce the results desired.  Like most things in life, only time will tell.

Lost and Found – Mack and Autocar

Welcome to the most recent edition of Lost and Found.  This time up we have trucks from two of America’s most storied truck manufacturers, Autocar and Mack.  As you can see, both trucks have been enveloped by a thick stand of weeds.  The R-Model Mack still wears a NYS Inspection sticker from 2009 so it was probably on the roads just a short time ago.  Unlike it’s companion the Autocar has been resting in this spot for a very long time.  It is setup with a material handler and despite the cosmetic wear seems rather solid.  Click on the photos for a larger view of each truck.

ebay Finds – The Wooden Semi

Well, what more can I say? If you have wanted a semi truck made of solid maple wood look no further.

Based a 1974 Autocar this wood truck runs and drives good, has a functional 2 into 1 exhaust and complete fifth wheel. I am guessing the insperation came from an Autocar like the one below.

Check out the actual listing here. Ever come across a crazy or unique eBay item? Let me now, eric@dailydieseldose.com

Almost got away with it….

A wannabe 007 trucker was arrested on the George Washington bridge yesterday after officers observed his toll evading trick. When approaching the toll booth the driver, Nelson Vaquiz, would pull a string raising his license plate making it unreadable to cameras and thus avoiding the 65 dollar toll. According to the Port Authority nearly 14 million dollars in tolls have been lost over the past two years with similar cons. The result? One impounded Peterbilt and a 5,000 dollar bail. Video below.

Know Your Diesels – The Detroit Diesel Series 71

Welcome to the first in a series of stories relating to famous diesel engines of the past and present.  I can’t think of a better one to start with than the Detroit Diesel Series 71. The story begins back in 1938 when GM subsidary Detroit Diesel unvieled thier first product, the two stroke, inline 6 cylinder 6-71. The inline models were offered in a one, two, three, four and six cylinder variants. In 1957 V-block versions were introduced and would eventually included 6,8,12,16,24 configurations. At first glance the naming convention seems cryptic but is rather straight forward when you think about it. For example, the 6-71. The six stands for the number of cylinders, the 71 stands for the cubic displacement of each cylinder. The 12V71 is a 12 cylinder in a V-block setup. To continue the code a T would stand for turbo charged. L or N would stand for low profile, a setup commonly used in buses. The larger of the 71 series in a V-Block configuration were usually two of the smaller setups married together our used the same set of heads allowing parts to be easily swapped. The applications of the 71 series were limitless. 6V-71 were common with bus and coach builders. 8V-71 were popular with firetruck manufactures, it is pretty difficult to find an old fire truck without an Detroit under the hood or cab. But to really appreciated a Detroit you have to hear it, they truly have a sound all their own. So, on to the videos.

6-71 – 190 HP

12V71 – 450 HP

8V-71 – 318 HP

I hope you enjoyed my novice homage to this great and long lived engine. Despite their unfailing ability to constantly leak oil you will still find fans of the 71 all across the globe. Please feel free to correct or and any relevant information by emailing eric@dailydieseldose.com or just leave a comment below. If you have a candidate for the next KYD story let me know!

The New Chevy Colorado – Diesel Powered?

Let’s take stock of the current “compact” truck market in the in the United States.

The Ford Ranger –  a solid truck but based on a comically old platform of nearly 30 years.  Production is scheduled to end next year with the closure of the Twin Cities Assembly plant.

The Canyon and Colorado – The successors to the long running S-10/Sonoma pickup trucks.  In my eyes, these trucks were a step backward from their predecesors.  I remember talking to a GM sales rep when they trucks were unvieled as new models.  He admited that the trucks were “less than we hoped they would be”.

Toyota Tacoma – Great truck but too expensive for it’s size.  The higher end models easily rival the price of full size pickup so why go compact?

Nissan Frontier – Solid vehicle.  Perhaps one of the few models that has not suffered from bloating of size or price.

Dodge Dakota – Like the Ford, an aging platform with poor sales, discontinued as of August 2011.

For some time, it seemed the compact pickup truck market was to be abandoned by all domestic manufactures but GM recently announced that it’s new global Chevy Colorado will be coming stateside.  This could be a game changer.  The truck you see below is already on sale in various markets around the globe and if all goes as planed will be available in the U.S. as 2013 model. Many questions still remain to be answered about the new Colorado with the biggest being the power plant. Will it be diesel powered? A 2.5 or 2.8 liter turbo diesel Duramax is just one option available to overseas buyers. It’s hard to say if a version of the two engines will make the jump with the truck. Chevy has already announced plans to add a diesel powered Cruze to the line up in the next two years so the corporate mindset appears to be ripe. Keep your fingers crossed!

Caterpillar 769 Dump Truck

The Caterpillar 769 started production in 1963 and was Cat’s first off road dump truck. It had a payload of about 35 tons and was powered by a 400HP engine. A variant of the 769 is still in production today. Impressive run. The model below belongs to the 769 vintage of the late 70’s or early 80’s. If you know better, please let me know. Based on the looks of this truck it has bee no stranger to hard work over the years. When I snapped this photograph it had the markings of Barrett Paving Materials on it. No doubt it used to work at the quarry in Jamesville, NY which has since changed ownership to Hanson Aggregates. Look at the groove on the rear tire, looks like it was running on rails!
