Autocar Mondays – What Once Was

Fair warning, you may want to read this story backward if you want to see an old Autocar rise from the grave. Chris sent me these shots of a 1971 DC10364 once operated by Cape Cod Ready Mix of Orleans, MA. For nearly ten years this truck, number 159, hauled dump and bulk trailers with ease and style. After being purchased by Cape Cod Truck Service it found a second life as heavy wrecker with a massive winch up front and and homemade wrecker body in the rear. A blown motor eventually lead this truck to the back lot where it sat until 2010.

Autocar DC Wrecker

The restoration process began but was soon put on hold in favor of saving a 1978 DC9364. Not much is left of old 159 except for the blown motor and a few other pieces. Sometimes you can’t save them all even if you try. Thanks for sharing Chris!

NYS Fair Grandstand Demolition

Progress claims another one. Yesterday the 38 year old grandstand at the great New York Stair Fair was demolished to make way for a new and improved fair going experience. For years public officials have claimed it was too old and the upgrades too expensive to attract the national talent necessary for turning a profit. Seeing as I’m just five years younger than this obsolete structure I’m glad tax dollars aren’t used to keep me going or might be out of here before 2020! Over the decades the grandstand played host to an almost countless number of famous musical acts and other talent. And let us not forget about the motorsports! Demolition derbys, monster trucks, tractor pulls, the famous Great American Truck Racing series and of course, Super Dirt Week. All of that history came crashing to the earth in just around twenty seconds after 268 precision explosions tore the steel support beams with shocking ease.

The public was invented to attend by viewing from a nearby parking lot. It would have been a great spot if you had x-ray vision so my father and I decided to camp out on a nearby bridge. We arrived early and had our choice of spots. Soon we were joined by hundreds of others hoping to catch a glimpse of a structure that helped symbolize the the unofficial end to summer for generations. I can’t even begin to write intelligently about the DIRT fans who will now have to find a new home. Check out this great article over Jalopnik for a passionate explanation of what was lost yesterday.

My goal in the coming weeks of this new year? To obtain more footage of the removal the 2500 tons of concrete and 150 tons of steel that made up the grandstand. It’s estimated to take a few months. I think I can figure something out during that time. So long grandstand, it feels like we hardly knew you.

Pit Fenders

Pit fenders, you don’t seem them around much on new rigs, if at all. Kenworth still offers them on their C500 line but I can’t think of many other trucks that come with them from the factory. Lightweight and aerodynamic front clips have killed the OEM pit fender. Looking at this setup I am reminded of this photo from Joe Kelly. Back in the early 90’s the Madison County Highway Department shipped a few Volvos and Internationals off to Specialty Trucks Inc for the installation of steel butterfly hoods and fenders. Could it be that the truck seen below is a former MCHD rig? It sure looks an awful lot like this one recently sold at action.

Pit Fenders

I first saw this ugly duckling at Tracey Road Equipment back in the summer of 2014. I never got around to posting a photo of it but now seems like a good time. Can you spot all the changes?

Mine Rescue

Yesterday a potentially tragic situation was avoided when 17 miners were rescued from a broken elevator shaft of the the deepest mine in North America, the Cayuga Salt Mine in Lansing, NY. Descending 600 feet per minute to an eventual depth of 2300 below the surface a mechanical problem occurred jamming the elevator in place. A normal four minute ride turned into a ten hour ordeal of freezing temperatures until a crane with a long enough cable could be located for the rescue effort. The skilled operators of Auburn Crane and Rigging received the call for help and were able to assist using their rough terrain Grove Crane. Below is a video interview explaining the entire situation through ACR crew interviews.

Long time visitors to this site may recall the coverage of Auburn Crane and Rigging when they were in town to construct on a parking garage. Check the links below for those historic posts.

Brockway 762

I was digging through some of my old files yesterday when I came across this nice looking Brockway 762 owned by Clarence Ritchie. Back in 2013 I paid Clarence a visit and was provided the red carpet treatment of his always changing truck collection. We even took a ride in his ’74 Brockway 361 tow truck. It’s Detroit powered for those wondering if they should bother clicking on the link. During our drive we stopped off a slate quarry that also doubles as an old age home for a wide variety of heavy duty classic trucks. With all the excitement something was bound to get lost and the 762 was that truck.  Below is a video of the truck starting up and moving out of the garage so the 361 could stretch its legs for a bit. You’ll also catch a glimpse of a few other Brockways owned by Clarence. On that trip I didn’t take too many photos of the treasurers contained within but believe me when I tell you there a some real gems. I had to leave something to photograph on a future visit after all. 😉

Once again, thanks to Clarence for opening his doors and sharing his time for me and for you!

Volvo For a Good Time

You have waited long enough. But for what? A video of construction work promised back to you on April 3rd of last year. Back during that time I was spoiled when it came to the connective corridor construction work taking place all over downtown. After nearly two years I didn’t pay much attention to the equipment working away on a daily basis. Now, in the dead of winter, I miss it. I didn’t think much of this video back in April but changed my mind while stitching it together last night. Highlights include the unloading of the Volvo ECR350CL excavator, a clip of it squeezing between a building and a light pole and a quick shot of Peterbilt with a very active Jake.

You might have noticed the same Autocar ACL dump truck pops again and again in the various clips. While there were six or seven independent contractors hauling for this project the driver of the Autocar always managed to make good time from the job site to the quarry and back again. Other drivers seemed to get lost for extended periods of time or disappear altogether. If you want it, you gotta work for it.

Autocar Mondays – Double Up

Age is just a number. This point of view rings true when finding old Autocar trucks still in active service. A prime example is this 1978 DC87 for the Town of Smithfield, NY. Joe happened to catch this well maintained old rig while looking for even older iron. Sometimes you find diamonds when looking for gold. This classic started life as single axle and originally could be found prowling the tarmac of Hancock Field which happens to be the local Air National Guard base.

The getup and go guts for this truck are Cummins Power Torque PT-270 mated to a Fuller RTOF958LL transmission. Out back on the spotless dump bed you’ll find a chip spreader used during those wonderful summer months for oil and stone work.

Great catch Joe! Thanks for sharing.

Pump It Up

This is exactly what it seems, a concrete pumper pumping concrete through an open window.

At the Dealer – Cats and Stars

Too much chrome? No one is going to say that about this CT681.  And what about those aluminium rims? You could make a great deep dish pizza in one of those. Can you tell I have no interesting facts to go along with this photo?

Cat CT681

If there was a 680 in the line the trifecta would have been complete.

Caterpillar Trucks

I know a little more about these three Western Stars. They have a future home in the stable of Terpening Trucking, a regional fuel company that delivers over 1 million gallons a day! Back in the golden years Terpening was a large user of Brockway trucks, a few of which you can see when you visit their website.

Western Star 5700XE

So how did I learn about the the proud new owner of these trucks? It’s easy when there is a fourth already lettered up and sitting in the service line.

The factory delivery sticker hanging in the window also helped. 😉

Lowboys Make it Happen

Ah yes, more footage from York, PA. I feel this video is a good representation of the change in preference when it comes to companies that haul trucks and heavy equipment for a living. Below you’ll see a fleet of rigs from Blair Corporation of Ivyland, PA. You’ll notice that all the active haulers are late model Peterbilts while the trucks being towed or mostly Mack Superliners and B-Models. Stop and think about it. The last time you saw a piece of machinery heading down the highway what truck was doing the hauling? Most likely a Peterbilt or Kenworth. In recent years these two brands have become the default rig to buy when specing a heavy haul truck. Now, there is nothing wrong with these trucks but it makes me wonder what happened to bring about the change in preference? A new generation? Lack of options in engines or transmissions from Mack? Anything I can suggest is purely anecdotal based of three minutes of video footage but it’s fun to speculate.

The video gets off to a rough start with some aggressive golf cart drivers but smooths out toward the end with some nice Detroit Diesel action. Trucks seen from Blair Corporation and A.H. Cornell & Son.

Trucks in order of appearance.

  • 2015 Peterbilt 389 hauling a 1928 Mack AC and a 1965 Mack B-61.
  • 2015 389 Peterbilt hauling a 1991 Mack Superliner.
  • 2004 Peterbilt 379 hauling a 1947 Mack EQX.
  • 2001 Peterbilt 379 hauling a 1985 Mack Superliner.
  • 1978 International 4370 hauling a 1974 Mack R-Model.
