Field of Values

We’ve seen the GMC General, The Oshkosh and the Transtar4300, now for the rest. Not everyday you see a Peterbilt 320 6×6 mixer truck.

Peterbilt 320

Chenango(?) County saw fit to dump this 2674 into the hands of the public.

International 2674

Nice pair of Louisville trucks here. You could have bought both and started your own blue oval dump truck fleet.

Frod Louisville Line

It seems like every year a really nice and clean Loadstar shows up at auction. Too bad they are always gas powered. Sadly it was the style of the time.

Tractors and Tracks

I enjoy seeing all the new tractors and equipment on display at the Empire Farm Days but maybe, just maybe, I enjoy the associated auction a little bit more. RTW Auctions really seem to find some real treasures from the surrounding fields of the Finger Lakes. Most probably see junk or quick dollar signs from the scrap yard but the cruddier the better in my book. We’ve seen some of the trucks now lets check out the other stuff.

First, a true lump of iron. I don’t think this Cat dozer (D6?) could every truly rust away without a trace. The metal is simply too thick. Check out that ROPS system made out wood. Works great against the sun but not much else. There is a walk around video coming soon.

Cat D6 Dozer

Plenty of Case farm equipment was pulled from the weeds and was conveniently all lined up together. I wouldn’t be surprised if they all came from the same pasture.

Case Farm Tractor

Tons of heavy equipment available too. Where else can you see a line up like this? International Harvester, Trojan, Case. The construction equipment industry was diverse back in the days.

Payloaders

More tractors, more construction equipment, more everything. By this point in the day my brain was fried from sun and what was most likely a raw hot dog so I don’t have much more to add other than the next time you attend something like this bring a check book. Tomorrow, the rest of the truck.

At Auction – Oshkosh Snow Plow

Ooops, messed up with this post. I didn’t really want to have back to back snow plow entries but I only realized that desire after putting together the video seen below. It would be a waste not to publish it so bring on the plows.

This lump of iron was up for sale at the Empire Farm Days auction. I’m unsure of the exact vintage but it seems old, like 60’s era old? I’m basing this guess only on pure speculation from observing certain trim pieces. Once a Town of Fabius, NY truck this tired Oshkosh last had a safety inspection in 1996. I wouldn’t be shocked if it spent the past 19 years sitting out behind a salt shed until it was dragged to Seneca Falls for the sale.

Oshkosh Plows

On the passenger side door was the handy shifting tutorial.

Ohskosh Shifting

Heavily rusted. Bad tires. Plow equipment removed. Scrap prices are low, low, low right now so I’m guessing this didn’t go for that much dough.

So what do you think?  Can anyone figure out an exact age?

Not Fall Yet

The other day on Facebook my news feed was overrun with people talking about fall. Fall weather. Fall cooking. Fall clothes. Fall activities. I wanted to yell and each and everyone and tell them we still have three calendar weeks of Summer left! But then I remembered I run a website that shares photos of plows all year long and felt like a hypocrite. With that in mind, check out this mini fleet of Western Star 4700’s for the Onondaga County DOT.

Western Star 4700

Exciting! But, I must confess that each time I see a new truck at Tracey Road for the county a little bit of dread sneaks in as I realize that the very truck I’m looking at could be the replacement to one of my beloved International 2674 rigs. For posterity sake here is truck 60, a 2001 model with a Cummins N14 still rocking in the free world. I’ve been told it it recently received a full going over and is ready for at least one more winter.

International 2674

Onondaga’s neighbor to the south, Cortland County, is also getting in on the 4700 game. I caught two of their new rigs behind a local radio shop. Viking plow equipment all around with Beau-Roc dump bodies. Love that green.

Cortland County Plow

Spotted this new Mack Granite for Town of Beekman over at Beam Mack. I confess, I had to look that one up on a map. It’s way downstate.

Mack Granite Plow

Also onsite was a brand new single axle Granite in full dress for the NYSDOT. I left without taking a picture after a pair of Harrier jets made a low pass while landing at the airport directly behind the dealer . I’m easily distracted.

25 Years of Great Memories

This Sunday, September 6th, the Northeastern Pennsylvanian chapter of the ATCA will host their 25th annual antique truck show and flea market. I wasn’t at that first show way back in 1990 but I have attend for the past ten years or so? Maybe a little more. Maybe a little less. Either way, I can personally vouch for the great trucks and fantastic people that make up this show. You won’t be disappointed if you attend. Even when the weather doesn’t cooperate the turn out is still amazing and this year the weather looks to be great.

In honor of the 25th anniversary I put together a top video of some the most memorable trucks, for me at least, from the years I have made it to the show.

If you have an old truck fire it up and bring it to the show. You will be welcomed with open arms. Below are various show flyers from the club Facebook page that I feel are really well done. With the inclusion of different trucks they remind me of trading cards. Gotta collect them all!

Autocar Mondays – Out to Pasture

Today we have a pair of Autocar ACL64B models that joined the Town of Sullivan, NY in back to back years but will leaving together once the auction hammer falls.

Truck #10 is a 1992 ACL64B with a Cummins LTA-10 285HP diesel matched to a Fuller RTOF14708LL transmission. During the winter months this truck would wear an Everest one-way & right side wing plow combo along with a fiberglass frame mount sander.

Autocar ACL64B

As 1991 model truck 17 is nearly identical to its younger brother in every way except for a difference in wheelbase length. Both trucks were spec’d with the same engine, transmission and steel butterfly hood. Once again, Everest plows and tub sander complete the snow fighting arsenal.

So what is to become of these trucks? Former Town of Sullivan employee and all around plow expert Joe Kelly first spotted these trucks being prepped for auction when he stopped by for a visit back in October of 2014. I later caught the pair sitting in the Town Hall parking lot in late July of this year. As of last Wednesday they were still there! So far they have yet to show up on any of the usual online auctions places for municipal equipment so I guess you still have time to get your ducks in order if you want these two rigs.

A huge thank you to Joe for compiling the relevant information on these trucks and so many others that once worked the roads in the Town of Sullivan. Check out his flickr gallery to see more shots of the trucks above along with Brockways, Walter Snow Fighters and more!

Lost and Found – International CO4070

Last year coming back from the Empire Farm show I passed a truly heavy duty Mack truck with a long wheel base and winch system. It looked like a truck you would find in the oil fields of Texas and not the rolling hills of the Finger Lakes. That truck is still there, sitting along NYS Route 414 watching a steady stream of garbage haulers heading to the Seneca Meadows landfill. This year the Mack was joined by another interesting old truck, this International CO-4070.

International CO7040

Who would like to guess what the CO stands for? The International CO-4070 officially began production in 1968. It was the successor to the short lived CO-4000 line of truck that had replaced the wildly popular DCO line perhaps better known as the Emeryville just a short three years earlier. The all aluminum doubled walled cab featured welded construction instead of rivets, generous amounts of insulation and completely redesigned interior. Running along the bottom of the door found trim proudly introducing the Transtar nameplate to the world. This model would remain a staple of the International heavy truck lineup until 1981. Unfortunately somewhere over the year this truck has lost both pieces of design work from those glory days.

International CO4070

The CO-4070 came with a variety of engine choices and a near limitless combination of transmission options. The standard engine in those early years was the in house special, the International DVT-573 V-8 diesel capable of producing 230 horsepower. Truckers looking for something different could pick from fifteen different engines between the various Cummins and Detroit options. I poked my head under the cab of this rig but couldn’t find any identify features one way or the other so that part shall remain a mystery.

When it comes to the year of this old warrior your guess is a good as mine. I’m sure there is some tiny bit of trim, maybe something a little different about the grill or headlights that can clue a true CO-4070 fan into the exact year. If so, please share. Based on everything I see I can’t find anything to suggest this truck didn’t roll out of the factory right at the start of production in July of ’68.

If you have any ideas about what company this truck once belonged to please speak up. The National Boom crane out back suggests a former life in the service of utility company. Most likely this truck hauled a trailer with telephone or power poles attached. The asking price on the window is a low $5,500. Is that enough to entice you? If only there had been a phone number listed! 😉

Maintenance of Way

Trains are large. Trains are powerful. Trains are unrivaled on land in terms of raw cargo pulling power. But even the most powerful train will grind to a halt if not for an army of trucks and other equipment used to keep the tracks clear and in shape. Maintenance of way trucks we salute you.

At first glance I figured this truck was just a lube rig but then I noticed the sprayers up front and outback. Not seeing any hazardous material placards I’m guess this truck applies some sort of chemical along the tracks. We can only guess at what type.

RWC Inc

This Peterbilt looks like it could pull a train car or two if push came to shove.

CSX Truck

We’ll wrap things up with this Crew cab Freightliner which is definitely a fuel and lube truck.

New Macks, New Western Stars, New Freightliners

I won’t pretend that I don’t have a leaning toward the trucks of the past but new rigs are not without their charm. Sometimes they look pretty darn good if you ignore all the electronic gremlins and engine problems that are lurking beneath the sheet metal. Maybe I’m painting with too broad a brush? I normally don’t take photos of Volvos but when I do they come out looking fantastic. That is my skill. 😉

The sun was in the perfect location for this shot when I stopped by Beam Mack. That’s one good looking VNL.

Volvo VNL

Mack fans don’t fret, a nice pair of Pinnacles were also on hand with future in leasing through Conway Beam Leasing.

Mack Pinnacle

Moving to the other side of town we pay a visit to Tracey Road Equipment and a day cab Western Star 5700XE. Of all the new and radical truck designs of the past few years I’ve warmed up to this one the quickest. Hopefully these will sell well and break up the monotony of fleet trucks on the highways of today.

Western Star 5700XE Day Cab

Obviously based on the sun in this photo I didn’t take the shot below during my visit with the 5700XE. I found it to be a nice representation of the Daimler Trucks North America line up with a Western Stars of all types, a Freightliner Cascadia and a poor little M2 hiding in the background.

19985584796_0f00b8beb4_b

Seen below, a day cab Pinnacle also for Conway Beam Leasing, like the ones above it will probably be a dedicated customer truck, another shot of the Volvo and a look at the red Pinnacle hiding in it’s shadow. If only the spots had been reversed. What a photo that would have made! *Update* I almost forgot about a new Mack Granite for Van Slyke Trucking.

Still Working – Old Dump Trucks

Old dump trucks coming out of the wood work! They’re everywhere! Just like we saw a short time ago it’s the season for experienced equipment to come out of hiding and help with construction projects in the fleeting days of nice weather. At the Hotel Syracuse renovation I spied this Ford LTL 9000 of ERSI.

Ford LTL9000

Across town, acres of concrete parking lot have been torn up and ground into small chucks for what has been rumored to be a new ready mix or asphalt plant for Riccelli Enterprises. That would be great if true as it would be real nice and easy location for truck watching. Look at the gems it is already producing! This International S-2500 of Greene Excavating is absolutely mint in every way. Paired with that old steel dump body out back and you have a real blast from the past.

International S-2500

Time to revisit and oldie but a goodie in the form of this Diamond-Reo Giant of ProPave. Now in its third showing on Daily Diesel Dose since 2011 this truck is still going strong and appears to be well maintained. My driveway should have been replaced a decade ago and I’m tempted to go with ProPave simply because they run this truck and a LTL 9000.
